“Word salad?” Rogue asked, confused. She was sitting in a chair in Professor Xavier's office, along with Xavier himself, Dr. McCoy, Logan, Piotr and John. Rogue had insisted that the two Acolytes join in the meeting as Remy's friends.
“That's a common term for it.” Hank said, looking over the paperwork in his hand. “The technical term is Schizophasia. It's listed as a symptom of several different mental illnesses, including Schizophrenia. Basically his brain can't string together the right words to express his thoughts.”
“Always thought Gambit had a few kangaroos loose.” Pyro commented. He was sitting in a corner of the office, eyes fixed on the flame from the one lighter that Xavier allowed him to have. The flame was of a figure dancing what from a distance looked to be the Macarena.
“It's not funny!” Rogue snapped. How on earth could he joke at a time like this? “Do you even have a serious bone in your damn body?”
Pyro shrugged. “Dunno sheila, haven't looked.”
“Allow me.” Rogue glared, her hands clenching together into fists. This guy might be Remy’s friend, kind of, but that didn’t mean she wouldn’t rearrange a few vital body parts if he didn’t shut up.
“Rogue, knock it off.” Logan said sternly, while giving the insane Aussie an evil look. The young man didn't even notice though; he was back to playing with his lighter. The dance of the flame was quite realistic.
Rogue bit her lip. Logan was right; arguing with Pyro...John...his name is John... wasn't helping Remy. “Sorry Logan, sorry Dr. McCoy.” she said. If he keeps it up though, Remy won't be the only one that's incoherent she thought to herself malevolently.
“It's alright Rogue, this has been a horrific day for all of us.” Xavier said. He looked calm but his voice sounded tired. There had been so many losses today. “Dr. McCoy, please continue.”
“Thank you Professor. I've been conducting some tests to see what the extent of the brain damage is, but I'll need more time to completely go over the results.” Hank said.
Logan spoke up. “Has Mags woken up yet?”
“No, I've been keeping him sedated.” Hank said. “I don't know what this may have done to his powers, and I don't want to take any chances. I want a better understanding of what's been done and how to treat it before waking him up.”
“Should be doing the same thing to the Cajun.” Logan muttered.
“Remy's not a threat.” Rogue said angrily. “He helped us. He turned his back on Magneto, and look where it's gotten him.”
“He was dumb enough to follow Magneto in the first place; who says he won't do it again?” Logan countered.
“Because I know him, Logan.” Rogue said, exasperated. “Remy won't turn on us.”
“He won't turn on you, you mean.” Logan didn't sound convinced.
Rogue shook her head. “No. He knows it would mean the same thing.” She looked back over at Hank. “Do you have any ideas on how to help him yet?”
“Well, from the tests and limited communication I've had with him he seems to have little trouble with comprehending things, he just can't communicate. If I could only find out what Essex was trying to do, maybe it could help me fix what was done to them.” Hank said with a trace of frustration in his voice.
“Sir.....” A voice broke in quietly.
“I say we wake up Buckethead and make him tell us what he and his buddy were planning to do once they got their hands on the Morlocks.” Logan said. Rogue knew he was just itching to take the anger he had to be feeling out on someone; she was feeling that way herself.
“Sir....”
Hank shook his head. “I doubt that will do much good, considering he's probably in the same condition Remy is in.”
“Sir....”
“Well we won't know until....”
“LOGAN. Please.” Xavier said, shooting Wolverine a look before turning to the voice that had been trying to catch his attention. “Now Piotr, what did you want to say?”
Everyone looked at the large young man who up until now had just been sitting silently a few feet away from John. Now he looked around the room a little uncertainly, and Rogue was reminded of when she had first joined the X-Men, having to get used to being in ordinary day to day situations with people she was used to fighting, or at least being at odds with, and she sympathized with him. It wasn’t going to be easy for him, making the transition, but she would try to help him as much as possible for Remy’s sake, and for his own.
“Well” Piotr said hesitantly. “Dr. Essex was with us for some time before today, and he and Magneto spent long periods of time talking privately in Magneto's office. There may still be paperwork there that wasn't taken to the laboratory. I do not think Magneto would allow Essex to do his work without keeping some copy of it for himself.”
“So we go raid Magneto's office, right?” Rogue asked the Professor. “I can get in there with no problem at all.” She loved being able to use her enemies' powers to her own advantage, especially if she could use it against them.
Logan nodded. “Not a bad idea, kid. We'll have to do it soon though. When I went back to that lab there were no bodies around, not even Essex's. With all of his work gone up in smoke he may have decided to send his goons back to the Acolyte base to get whatever was left there.”
“We should go now then.” Rogue said. “It's been hours; they've had plenty of time to go back there since we left.”
“John and I will go with you Rogue.” Piotr said. “We know how to turn Magneto's security system off, and you may need help in case Dr. Essex's men return.”
“Can I bring me flamethrower?” John asked, having regained interest in the conversation.
“In that case I'm going too.” Logan said, looking at John warily. Rogue knew he was still waiting for Pyro to try to set the mansion on fire. “No offense Chuck, I know you've taken these two in, but just this morning they were working for Magneto. They haven't earned our trust yet and I'm not letting Rogue go to their own base alone with them.”
Rogue almost protested; she was sure of Piotr's loyalty, both for Remy's sake and for the Professor's help with his sister, and while she wasn't completely sure of John's loyalty she was confident in Piotr's ability to keep him under control. Arguing with Logan on this was going to be useless though, and besides, she didn't mind him coming along for backup.
“Very well Logan. Any information you can find will be needed. And yes John, you can bring your flamethrower. I don't want anyone going there defenseless in case Essex or any of his men show up.” Professor Xavier said. “Now if all of you will excuse me, I need to look in on Ororo.”
Everyone got up as the Professor maneuvered his chair around his desk and left the room. The others followed. McCoy returned to the infirmary to look after his patients while Logan went to check on the prisoners, saying he wanted to make sure everything was secure before he left the mansion. Piotr and John went to get the latter's flamethrower; as for Rogue, she went back down to the infirmary to see Remy one more time before she left.
When she got there she found he was awake and playing solitaire with a deck of cards that McCoy had found for him. He smiled and lit up a card when he saw Rogue.
“I see you still have your power.” she said, smiling back. Of course he did; the last thing Essex would have wanted was to damage Remy's mutation.
Remy nodded and withdrew the charge from the card before laying it down on one of the rows on the tray he had his game set up on. He had eaten, and the empty plate was sitting on the table next to his bed. Rogue made a note to herself to bring it up to the kitchen on her way out.
She sat down in the chair next to the bed and Remy abandoned his game to take her hand, bringing it up to his mouth to kiss it. He looked at her ruefully and Rogue understood his frustration at not being able to communicate with her.
“I know Remy, this stinks.” she said with a sigh, and squeezed his hand. He didn't let go of it; instead he rested it against his leg, still clasped within his own, and took another card off the deck.
“I can't stay long. I'm going back to Magneto's base to see if maybe he or Essex left anything there regarding what they were working on.” she said. “Logan, Piotr and John are going with me. When we got you out of that lab, there was a fire and the building exploded, but we think that Essex and two of his guys escaped. We want to get to the base before they decide to go raid Magneto's office.”
Remy squeezed her hand, looking concerned.
“It's okay Remy. I'll be careful, and I've got plenty of backup. I've gotta go now, but you get some rest. I'll be back before you know it.” Rogue said, and started to stand up.
Remy released her hand. “The hail is eating fish.” he said, and while the words were complete nonsense, the tone of his voice and the look on his face made it clear what he was trying to say.
Rogue bit her lip. Every time she heard him like this she wanted to cry. “I love you too, Swamp Rat.” she said, and stroked his cheek with her gloved hand before leaving, taking his empty plate with her. Hopefully they would find something at the Acolyte base that would help them get Remy back to normal.
