Chapter 35
Sif and the warriors three work to secure the palace and drive back any remaining dark elves or frost giants. They move quickly as the invaders are no longer motivated or organized without Malekith, Farbaute and Algrim to lead them.
Loki’s chambers
Loki stands on the balcony of his chambers looking out over the palace grounds. The signs of battle are evident all around. A knock at his door breaks him from his silent contemplation. He turns back to the room and closes the doors to the balcony as he goes to see who is calling on him at this late hour. Standing outside the door is a very disheveled looking Thor. Still in his armor, his body is streaked with the blood of their enemies. Stepping aside, Loki allows Thor to enter the room. In his arms he is carrying a long black box with intricate carvings all along the surface. Loki knows what this box contains. He averts his eyes, as Thor places the box on his desk, hoping to delay the inevitable conversation.
The blond man runs his hand across the designs in the wood and audibly exhales as he gathers his thoughts for what must come. “The casualty reports are coming in,” he tells his brother as he hands him a list.
Loki accepts the paper with no words and begins to scan it. Most of the names he does not know. There are a few that belong to men and women that he was familiar with on different levels. Towards the end of the list he takes a sharp intake of breath as he see’s Frigga name. His hand begins to tremble as he sets the list down on the desk next to the box.
“There will be a send off in 3 days time,” Thor begins. “I have come to ask… I would… Loki…. brother, I cannot do this…” his words falter as he rests his hand on the box.
The younger man looks between Thor’s saddened face and the box on his desk. He reaches for it and unclasps it. Inside the box is lined in blue velvet. Loki runs his finger tips along the lines of the bow that is placed within. “Thor, it is your honor to send mother off,” he finally says as he tries to blink back tears.
“Loki, I am asking you, nay, I am begging you, to do this, to take this honor and this burden from my hands. Please, brother. You have always held her favor.”
Loki stops running his fingers along the bow and closes the box. With a curt nod to Thor he caresses the outside again.
“If you feel it is safe, I will ask Heimdall to retrieve Shelia,” Thor tells his brother.
With another curt nod, Loki looks to the door and then enters his bath room and begins to draw a bath. Thor takes this as his cue to leave and lets himself out of the room leaving the bow behind.
Stark Tower
“Sir, you have another visitor on the roof.”
“Are you going to make me guess or can you tell me who it is?” Tony deadpans to his AI.
“It would appear to be Thor of Asgard,” Jarvis responds and Tony would swear the AI sounded a little snippy.
“I’ll go up and meet him!” Shelia announces excitedly from where she is sitting on the couch. She immediately heads to the elevator, anxious to have word of Loki. Bruce looks pointedly at Tony and the two of them head for the elevator right behind her. They both know that Thor arriving instead of Loki himself does not bode well.
When the elevator door opens to the roof, Shelia practically runs out to greet Thor. Bruce and Tony trail close behind. When she takes a moment to really look at Thor she notices the dark circles under his eyes, the drawn look on his face, the battle marred armor. Shelia stops in her tracks just short of reaching him, “Thor? Where is Loki? What has happened?”
Thor reaches out and grasps her arm lightly, “Loki is back on Asgard, he is…. well.”
When he doesn’t immediately continue Shelia is puzzled, but she waits, knowing that Thor is struggling with whatever it is he is trying to say. He opens and closes his mouth several times, trying to tell her, but finds it hard to bring himself to say the words. Finally he says, “mother was killed…….and the Allfather has fallen into the Odinsleep. I am here to return you to Loki. He needs you at his side.”
“Thor, a moment please?” Tony asks of his friend.
“I’ll just go gather some things,” Shelia tells them, discretely excusing herself.
When she is out of earshot Tony turns back to the Norse God, “what do you need? How can we help?”
“The send off is in 3 days. You are welcome to come. There are many fallen and it will be glorious.“
Bruce takes this opportunity to speak up, “what will happen now, who will lead Asgard?”
“My coronation is tomorrow. As successor, I will lead until father is able to take back his throne,” Thor explains softly.
“I will gather the others and we will come to stand with you and Loki. We will call on Heimdall when we are ready,” Bruce tells his friend.
Shelia arrives back on the roof carrying a small bag. Thor looks back to Tony and Bruce and grasps each of their arms, nodding his appreciation. Looking to the sky he calls out, “Heimdall we are ready,” and then pulls Shelia into his embrace as the sky lights up around them.
