Paige
nearly tripped over the large canine sitting just inside the front door. “Rahne!
Geez, give me a heart attack, why don’t you?”

What’re
you doing like that? Jono asked, sidestepping Paige as he carried in
their luggage. She still was not
talking to him, several days after their spat, and he was verging on desperate
to get her speaking to him again.

Rahne
growled low in her throat and jerked her head towards the study. Sam, entering after Jono, snorted. “Great.
Lassie’s here. Hey! You’re not supposed
to bite me!”

Rahne did
not respond but trotted towards the study where she shifted and pulled her
clothes on, waiting for the others to join her. Paige was the first to enter, cautiously in anticipation of tposspossibility of nudity. “Okay, guys. She’s decent.”

“I need
your help,” Rahne said without preamble.

“Why?” Sam
asked, instantly on guard.

Are
you always so paranoid?

“Shut up,
Jono. Why do you need our help?”

Rahne
sighed. “Jamie’s missing. So’s Jubilee
and Remy but…” She trailed off and
shrugged. “No one’s telling me
anything, damn it, and I’m sick of it.
The Professor keeps saying they’ll be back later but he sent Forge and
Banshef aff after ‘em. Late night in
the city, my ass!”

Paige
frowned. “Maybe that’s all it was.”

Rahne shook
her head impatiently. Quickly, she
related all she knew about Jubilee’s family and the mysterious nature of the
disappearances. “Understand?”

Paige
exchanged dubious glances with her brother.
“Maybe Jubilee just ran off with Remy and Jamie went along with
‘em. He and Jubes are close, you know.”

Rahne
growled, remarkably canine even in human form.
“No! I scented ‘em out and…” She
did not know how to explain the fact that what she smelled just plain was not
normal, not right. “I just know that
something is up and I need to find ‘em!”

“Forge and
Banshee will get to them before anything bad can happen,” Sam said in an
attempt at soothing Rahne’s frazzled nerves.

“Bollocks!”
Rahne cried. “I’ll do this myself
then!” She tried to push past them but
Jono grabbed her arm and stopped her.

Do
you have any idea where they went then, before you go off half cocked? Scenting them on the grounds is one thing
but can you follow the trail once they’re in a car? Or even in the air if it came to that?

Rahne
seemed to wilt. “No.”

Do
you trust Forge and Banshee?

“I guess…”

The
best you can do for now is to wait and see.
If they come back with any information, maybe then you can help find
them… Jono more than
sympathized with Rahne. He knew that he
would try to do the same thing should Paige disappear. How long have they been missing,
officially?

“Since last
night. The Professor said Jubilee’s cousin called and said they were delayed in
the city and decided to just stay the night.” She shook her head. “That’s bullshit.”

Paige laid
a sympathetic hand on Rahne’s shoulder and said, “I know it’s hard…”

“You know
nothing!” Rahne said, shrugging the hand away.
“You’ve got Sam and Jono here, your family in Kentucky…you don’t know what
it’ke!”ke!” She broke away and stormed from the room, slamming the door behind
her for good measure.

I
don’t know what we could have done to help her, Jono said after a
moment.

“Nothing,”
Sam replied. “Not a damn thing. We have no idea where any of ‘em went other
than the city and that’s too vague for anything useful.”

Paige
directed her words to her brother. “If
they took the Blackbird, there’d be a flight plan logged in the computers just
in case…”

“Let’s hope
Rahne doesn’t figure that one out any time soon,” Sam sighed. “She’d go off half cocked and try to follow
Forge and Banshee.”

That’d
only get her as far as where they landed.

“She’d go
all wolfy and sniff ‘em out,” Sam pointed out.
“Though she’d probably loose the trail once she got to populated areas.”

“Probably,”
Paige said thoughtfully. “Let’s hope
she realizes that.”

Jono had a
very strong feeling that, even if Rahne did know it, she would not care and
would press on anyway. I’m going
to go talk to her.

Sam let
several seconds lapse between Jono’s departure and his next words to his
sister. “I can’t believe you took him
to meet mom! She’s in the fucking
hospital and you drag that freak show in…”

Paige felt
her jaw tighten, the urge to strike Sam greater than it had been in years. “I love you very much, Sam.”

“Huh?”

“I just
want you to know that before I tell you that if you ever try to manage my life
again, I’m kicking your ass!”

“Paige!”

“Jono is a
sweet, wonderful, caring…” she stopped herself, realizing that she sounded like
the worst sort of Harlequin novel. “I
care very much about him, Sam. Like it
or not, he’s part of my life, even though I do want to wring his nonexistent
neck right now. He’s no more a freak
than either one of us. And for your
information,” she added smugly, “Mama loved him.”

“Paige,
he’s not even alive!”

“That’s up
for debate,” she said smoothly. “Sam,
no matter who I liked you’d think they weren’t good enough.”

“That’s not
true!” he protested.

“Okay, so
if I told you I wanted to date Evan…?”
“He’s too spikey.”

“Try
again.”

“He’s
too…too…smug!”

“How about
Remy then?” Sam’s inarticulate growl of response was answer enough. “Or…Scott?”

“He’s
married.”

“Not the
point.”

“What is?”
he cried, exasperated. “Paige, I want
you to be happy…”

“Then let
me live my life,” she said quietly.
“Let Jono live his. If we’re
meant to be together, we will be. If we’re not, then yeah, I’ll cry and curse
and be a general pain in the ass for a while, but that doesn’t mean you can
force happiness on me by threatening Jono. But,” she added slyly, smiling
faintly, “if we do end up together, you can’t force your happiness on me.”

“What’s
that supposed to mean?”

“It means
that, no matter how happy it’d make you to see me with someone of your
choosing, Jono is the one that I want, if he’ll get over himself and have
me. That’s what’d make me happy so deal
with it!” With a quick peck to Sam’s
cheek, she fairly skipped from the room.

“With God
as my witness, I will never understand teenage girls…”

Rahne wiped
furious tears from her eyes as she knocked on the boathouse door. “I need your help,” she blurted as soon as
Scott opened the door.

“What’s
wrong? Oh…” As soon as the words left his mouth, he realized what she
wanted.

“What’re
the codes to the computer in the hangar?
I can’t get in and I’ve tried all the ones I know!” She sounded so desperate that he nearly told
her, just to make her feel better.

“Rahne,
no,” he said, stepping out onto the small porch to stand with her. “Forge and Banshee will do their best…”

“I’m not a
kid,” she snarled suddenly. “Or a
mushroom. So don’t keep me in the dark
and feed me shit.”

“Rahne…”

“I’m sick
and fucking tired of being treated like I can’t handle things around here. Believe it or not, I love Jamie and I’m not
going to sit around here while he’s in trouble. Banshee and Forge are old!
They’re slow!”

“They’re
better trained than any two of us put together,” Scott said, breaking into her
diatribe. “And I know that if Jean were
missing, I’d trust them with her life in a second before I tried to go after
her by myself.” Scott allowed to
himself that that was not entirely true, because he would insisted that he be
included in the search but he felt telling e the that would only expound the
problem.

“You’re all
useless!” she cried, turning to stride away, but pausing to throw over her
shoulder, “Where is Jean anyway?
Marital problems still acting up?”

“None of
your business.”

“It’s my
business when she’s spent the morning crying her eyes out he rhe rec room,
sniveling into a sweater that looks like it belongs to you.”

Scott
frowned as Rahne took off across the lawn.
Now what? he sighed inwardly.
She can’t be going to pieces yet…I’ve got a plan to work out!
