“Jono!” Kitty stopped in her tracks halfway down the steps. “Ohmygodareyouokay?”
He braced himself for the onslaught as she practically leaped the last six steps and tackled him in a hug. Kitty, he reflected, was one of three people who never shirked from touching him. He was not sure whether this constituted an irritation or just something to get over. At the moment, he was more concerned with other matters. _*Fine as can be, considering I’ve been dead for a few years, * _ he replied, looking over her head at Logan, who himself looked vaguely harassed.
“Don’t talk like that,” she admonished, stepping back and giving him an assessing look. “The Professor’s going to want to see you, like, right now.” She glanced at Mark, her expression shifting to a deep frown. “What’s going on? Why do you both look like that? Why aren’t you happy that Jono’s okay?”
“Half Pint, why don’t you go see if the boys left any of my beers in the fridge?” Logan suggested, laying a heavy but gentle hand on her shoulder. “I need to talk to Mark.”
Kitty hesitated, then sighed and nodded, traipsing to the kitchen while muttering under her breath. “What is it?” Mark asked, one brow creeping upwards.
“You know as well as I do,” Logan began, then paused. “Jono, go see the Professor.”
Jono folded his arms across his chest and shook his head. _*I’m not stupid, Logan. I know it’s my fault. I know that coming back here because of me was a bad decision but you had no choice. You couldn’t take me with you. *_
Logan did not wince visibly but he did shift positions, standing taller and looking a bit more threatening to those who did not know him. “It wasn’t a mistake, kid. We couldn’t take you with us because we don’t know what we’re heading into. I’ll be damned if I endanger you. Again,” he added as an afterthought.
Professor Xavier’s study door swung open and the man himself sat there, filling the narrow passage while wearing an expression that was a mixture of pleasure and worry. “Jono,” he sighed. “Thank heavens.”
“Doesn’t he need to see the doctor?” Mark put in as Jono started towards the Professor. “We don’t know what they’ve done to him…”
_*Not bloody much, *_ Jono replied, looking over his shoulder at the librarian. _*Not much to do to a corpse. *_
Logan rolled his eyes. Jono was in one of his most maudlin moods; next, he thought, the kid was going to choose the code name Zombie. “Professor, we found Essex’s house but he was gone.”
“Someone took him out,” Mark put in. “The entire place was rigged for surveillance but most of the cameras had been disabled. We couldn’t find the control room proper but the one we did find seemed to be a dummy, meant to be located and destroyed by someone who did not know better.”
Professor Xavier glanced up at Jono and the youth gave a small nod, confirming the story. “Come into my office then,” he said, writing off any chance at a break, rubbing his shoulder idly. “We need to start compiling a dossier, as it were.”
Despite the urge to run off and into the wilds again in search of the others, Mark nodded in agreement. He knew that the best way to go about this, now that they had more information, was to formulate a better plan. Flying by the seat of one’s pants, he thought as he followed Logan into the study, could only get one so far.
Logan inhaled deeply, his eyes closing as a very slight smile curled the corner of his lips. “This gonna take long, Chuck? I need to…run an errand before we head out again.”
Professor Xavier did not comment directly but hid a slight smile himself at Logan’s reaction to the lingering scent of Storm’s perfume. “This will be a while, as you well know. We’ve had a Morlock sighting on the grounds in the past several hours, and it seems that there is some trouble on Emma’s side of things as well.” He paused again, debating whether to mention the Friends of Humanity rally. “There are some other issues to deal with later but for right now, I want to get the Essex part of the equation solved.”
Jono, who refused to sit, looked down on the Professor with narrowed eyes. _* I can tell you what happened from my point of view but it won’t go well. I saw Essex being carried out by himself. Followed by some huge man in a fur coat. The only way I knew it was Essex rolled up in the rug was his hand. He wears that damned ring with the bolts of lightening on it. *_
Mark swallowed hard. “Those aren’t lightening bolts. That’s S.S. insignia. He was friends with several members back in the day.”
Logan shifted uncomfortably, but Jono broke in before anyone else could say anything. _*That would make him… old. Really really old… *_
Professor Xavier cleared his throat gently, steepling his fingers as he often did when in deep thought. “Maybe the ring was placed on this other person’s hand. It’s a possibility Essex is attempting to lead us astray and will plant a body somewhere, badly burned perhaps…”
“Perhaps,” Mark cut in, “you have been watching too much Law and Order. Essex has no need to fake his death. He hasn’t for…” he paused, correcting himself mid-sentence, “for many years. He’s bold, he’s unafraid of anything that might harm him. He believes, truly believes, he is in the right.”
“If the Morlocks are so stirred up even after our little pow-wow,” Logan said, seemingly on a different train of thought, “something’s brewing below. Any word from Callisto? Or Caliban?” He knew before the Professor answered what the reply would be. “Think of sending someone to look?”
“I thought of sending someone who has an in with the Morlocks,” the Professor replied slowly, “but I don’t think that would be fair to her.”
Logan nodded. Storm would be distraught. Despite everything, she still felt responsible for Evan’s choice to join the tunnel dwellers and it haunted her every day. “Send the Cajun. Ain’t he nosin’ around, causin’ trouble? Thought I smelled smoke when we came in. And his godawful frou frou juice.”
Professor Xavier snorted softly in amusement, then nodded. “I’ll speak with him later, when he’s calmed down a bit. Right now, he’s prowling the grounds, smoking his last pack of clove cigarettes.” He switched his focus to Jono, his gaze sharpening and tone becoming more teacher-like and less fatherly. “Now, Jono, start with the night Paige vanished…”
