Professor
Xavier had mastered mindful meditation years before he
met Emma. He could sit in the middle of
a hectic, stressful meeting and be perfectly at ease, his being centered and
focused, calm and whole while other around him were on the verge of collapse. He could function in the mindful
state and not miss a beat. Emma,
however, was testing him sorely. He held
the phone away from his ear and cringed slightly, the shrill tone of her voice
enough to make his molars ache. “Emma,
calm down,” he said sternly when she paused for breath. “It’s just a flat tire. Let Sean do his job and you’ll be back on the
road in no time.”
Emma
inhaled deeply, then exhaled noisily. She was hot, tired, sore and annoyed. Her shoes were making her feet hurt, the
students were making her head hurt and Sean was making her temper short. “We do not have a spare in this car. Apparently, someone felt it was more
important to make room for a now empty beer cooler.” She glared at Sean, adding, “I blame a male.”
Professor
Xavier closed his eyes, setting his phone to the speaker option and leaning
back in his chair. He did not have to be
psychic to know she was beyond angry, well into the realm of that white-hot
rage that made her famous in her early days in the circle of mutants and
empowered humans that had remained mostly secret over the years. “Emma, listen to me and listen to me
carefully… This is beyond your
control. You’re just going to have to
wait for someone to come out and help.
Are you positive Logan is
unreachable?”
Emma’s
breath hissed over the line. She hated
being questioned on things she had already stated. “Yes, I am certain. He’s either in a dead spot or he has not
turned his phone on. Storm as well.”
“I’ll see
what I can do. For now, just sit tight.
You’re not going to like it but you’re just going to have to wait.” Professor Xavier hung up the phone before
there could be any further questioning and demands from Emma. “I apologize,” he said to his guest.
“No
worries,” Marrow smiled thinly. “Now,
are you ready to discuss my offer?” She
tucked her hand under her knee to keep still, the urge to play with her knife
great. “I take you to your… friend…and
you provide extra forces for the coming battle.”
“I’m afraid
you misunderstand when I say ‘battle,’ Marrow.
It’s metaphorical. I have no
intention of sending these students into a war.” He knew himself for a liar as soon as he said
the words. It would be a war, a long
suffering and subtle war with bursts of violence subdued by pained silences. And, he knew as he had known for years, as he
knew when he woke in the night with a knot in his chest and sweat on his brow,
not everyone would survive.
She stood,
her body aching with pent up rage. “Then
why do you train them for battle, Professor Xavier? Why do you train them to defend, to kill?” She shook her head, her eyes daring him to
deny the truth. “They are soldiers,
surely as I am, surely as the Morlocks are. It is not our choice but our lot in
life. My offer stands until
sundown. I will return to the tunnels
and wait. After sunset, I will come for
your answer. Your friend for help.” She paused, sweeping an appraising gaze over
his seated form. “If you choose not to,
then I cannot help your friend.”
“Do not
threaten me, Marrow. I have yet to see
proof that Forge is actually alive, much less somewhere you of all people can
reach him.”
Marrow
paused. She was so rarely called a
person that it threw her for a loop momentarily. “I have not shown you proof that he isn’t,”
she rejoined, stiffening.
“Very true. But I am
not going to throw my lot in with you unless I have proof he is alive and
attainable.”
She smiled,
her teeth bared in an animalistic grin. “That’s
the difference between us, Professor Xavier.
To me, everything is attainable if I want it badly enough.”
Professor
Xavier steepled his fingers against his lips as Marrow let herself out,
disappearing into the mansion and out into the tunnels by some means he had not
discovered. Mark was still upstairs, he
knew, with Tabby. He would not disturb
him yet. And Logan
would be out of range until much later.
He was in the hospital, the cell phone shut off. Marrow’s offer was tempting but he could not,
he thought almost angrily, put his charges in danger for a fight that was not
theirs. He pushed himself away from his
desk and moved towards the low table near the bookshelf. Seeking a distraction, he picked up the leatherbound book he knew belonged in the library but had
somehow not made it back down to be shelved yet. _I will not dwell. I will speak of this with Logan
and Storm on their return and come to a decision then… _
He was so wrapped in his thoughts that he almost missed the slip of
paper that fell from the book, a photocopied picture that was grainy and dark
but still discernable as three men standing in a laboratory. He frowned when he noticed the debris,
plucking it from his lap and almost disregarding it outright. Something caught his eye, though, and the Morlocks were forgotten.
“Oh, no…”
