“Professor?” Kitty knocked before sticking her head into the room, having learned her lesson from the Logan’s Bare Ass Incident of 2004. Hearing no response, she frowned. “Professor?” She knocked again, a bit harder this time.
“Come in…”
Kitty phased through the door, smoothing her ponytail in a nervous gesture as she moved. Professor Xavier was sitting behind his desk, rubbing his left hand with his right as if it ached. “You okay?” she asked, concerned at the look of pain on his face.
He expression instantly shifted to one of placid interest. “I’m fine. It’s just been a long morning,” he smiled tensely. “Are you going back to school today?” He knew that Kitty understood he would not pry without asking, and she was not open to being read. “Your visit was unexpected… it seems to me that you’re in need a brief break.”
She nodded somewhat haltingly, dropping to sit on the settee across from the desk with a sigh. “I just… Professor, I don’t want to disappoint you. Or Logan.” She swallowed hard, not meeting his eyes. “Or myself.”
“Why don’t you start at the beginning, Kitty?” he encouraged, glancing at the computer screen and deciding it could wait for a little bit. “I know you’ve been having trouble at the university but I thought you were very excited about this program.”
“It’s a bunch of…of…” She took a deep breath then let it out in a rush of words. “It’s a bunch of pompus, spoiled, elitist twits who think they’re God’s gift to biophysics!” She blushed furiously, hearing the words coming out of her mouth making the complaint seem petty. “I just can’t stand being there anymore! Everyone is so rude and mean to me and I can’t stand being treated like I’m a little kid!”
Professor Xavier waited a moment to make sure she was done for the time being before pressing onward. “Kitty, is your complaint that the subject matter is too difficult or that the people are not to your liking?”
“The subjects are easy enough,” she sniffed, swearing to herself that she would not cry, not over this. “I don’t mind working hard. I kind of like it—it makes me feel like I’m doing something with my life, you know? It’s just that no one is…” she paused. “It sounds stupid.” She met his eyes then, her blush creeping down her neck. “I feel like I’m on the edge of some breakdown. Everything is too much. People there won’t admit to mutants being real but I keep finding these stupid notes.” She choked on a sob then, pressing her hands over her face until she composed herself. “And the professors there don’t care that I know these things—I mean, I actually lost a grade because I corrected Professor Jameson about something!”
Professor Xavier inhaled, making a steeple of his fingers. After a quiet few seconds in which Kitty shook silently, marshalling her tears and scolding herself about emotional outbursts, he sighed. “Kitty, the most important thing right now is for you to do something you enjoy. You can either continue the program there, choose another school, or come back here and get a job.” It was the rule, one that had been voted on and approved by the staff and students at the Institute. You either go to school or you work, no slacking around. “I know this is a prestigious program at the university but in the end, is it worth it? Will it help you in what you want to do?”
She looked at him owlishly, her lips parted in surprise. “But… it’s so hard to get into! If I leave, I’ll be quitting! How will that look on my transcript? I mean…” she was on her feet then, pacing. “If I come back and go to Bayville…gah, that’s not even my safety school!”
Professor Xavier raised a brow. “I and the rest of the board of directors thank you.”
“Oh, lord,” she groaned. “I’m sorry!” She sank back into her seat and buried her face in the arm of the settee. “I suck!”
“Kitty, it’s fine!” he laughed gently. “I understand. Bayville isn’t the same caliber as your university and that’s perfectly fine to feel that way. But what is important here is…”
“Will I be happy or will I have a freaking nervous break down before I’m twenty?” she muttered. Standing suddenly, she tugged on her ponytail to tighten it and smiled at the Professor in a patented Kitty Pryde Has A Plan manner. “I’ve got to pack my stuff up—the train leaves at five.”
He frowned as she turned to practically skip from the room. “So you know what you’re going to do?”
“Nope!” she called back blithely, “but I have an idea!”
“That,” he sighed once she was on the other side of the door, “is just what I was afraid of.”
“Private property!” Kurt called, dropping from the oak near the gate, his book tucked firmly under his arm. “Do you have an appointment?”
“I’m looking for Kitty Pryde!” the young man behind the wheel of the fancy sports car called back, eyeing Kurt warily. “You live here?”
Kurt wished he had not put his holo on that morning. It was easier to scare people when you were blue and fuzzy, he reflected. “Why do you want to see Kitty? She’s busy.” He approached the gate slowly, his eyes narrowed to slits. “I can give her a message…” _Touch her and die, _ he thought bitterly.
“Um…” Pete Wisdom turned off the engine and stepped out of the car, holding a thick textbook in his hand. “She was supposed to do a study group thing with me and some of the guys from class last night but she never showed. I went by her room and found a note…” he trailed off, holding the book before him almost like a shield. “Who’re you?”
Kurt smiled, knowing his fangs showed even with the holo. “I’m her boyfriend.”
