Days later, Skylar sat in the living room of the school, sipping a glass of milk while she watched TV. She eyed the girl on the screen, the light green hair stood out amongst the entire guest attendance on the talk show.
“Welcome back! We said earlier today that a competitor in the junior women’s kick boxing tournament was going to be on the show today. Please welcome, Jessica Taylor to the show ladies and gentlemen,” the host greeted the tv viewers.
The girl with short light green hair smiled broadly. She wore a black turtle neck and skinny blue jeans with black leather boots.
“Thank you for joining us today, Jessica,” The host addressed the guest.
“Thanks for having me. Please call me Jessie,” Jessie replied, her accent clearly showing in her speech.
The host smiled with a small nod before inquiring, “So, we don’t know very much about you so far Jessie. All we really know is you grew up in Raleigh North Carolina and that shows in your accent. How did you get into boxing? Is that the only sport you participate in?”
“No, I uhh.. I kinda stumbled into boxing as a kid. I took martial arts as a child I have a black belt in ai kido and Kiarate. I also have competed in gymnastics, but I got into boxing probably when I was around ten. My older brother was getting into it and of course sibling rivalry and the thirst to prove yourself equal because you’re a girl. ‘Anything he can do, I can do’ and I didn’t just say it, I picked up those gloves and I did it. Never looked back,” Jessie answered.
Zac sat down on the couch next to Sky, a bottle of Dr. Pepper in his hand and stared at the TV screen.
The host nodded while asking, “Is it just the one sibling that you have? Just one brother?”
“No. Oh god, no. I’m uh, I’m the youngest of six, the only girl,” Jessie replied, her eyes widening at the realization of how many siblings she had.
“Wow, so five older brothers. I bet nobody bugged you on the school yard,” The host remarked.
“You’d be surprised. Thing is, my brothers, they wouldn’t fight my fights for me. They’d back me up if I needed ‘em to, sure. Ultimately what they were after was gettin’ me to stand on my own feet. ‘You ain’t ever to depend on no man’ they all say. ‘Cause all o’ us men? We’re pigs. Each n everyone o’ us can be the biggest pervert you’d ever meet. Best ya learn now to protect yourself than when you think you’re safe and you’re really not.’ It weren’t just physically fightin’ though. They’d try to break me, they’d mentally torment me. I got picked on the most by my brothers, and outta all o’ my siblings. Not a single day went by that one of ‘em wasn’t doin’ something to upset me. But thing is, they were the only ones, in their minds, that were allowed to. They catch anyone else makin’ me cry? They’d havin’ more than just words with the person that done it if I couldn’t muster it up to stand up for myself,” Jessie responded, slightly laughing at a few parts.
“Typical siblings, they tease and bicker, but hurt the sibling they bicker with they lay you out.”
Jessica nodded, “Yeah, a few poor saps found that out.”
The host then continued, “Now, I’m curious about the green hair. Why is your hair green?”
The teenaged girl smiled as she answered, “I did that myself. I like green. But the other thing too, if I can get a little political here, Is this mutant hype. I don’t care if you’re black, I don’t care if you’re yellow, I don’t care if you’re white. I don’t care if you’re gay, straight, bi, transgender, human or mutant. We all gotta share this earth. I dye my hair green, punks lookin’ to start trouble for mutants try cornerin’ me… and when I lay ‘em out cold, forces ‘em to remember it ain’t just mutants that can hurt ‘em. It’s kinda like an invitation, ‘supporter over her. Catch me if ya can’.”
“Aren’t you fightened by anti-mutant groups?” The host asked.
“No. The way I see it this is just another page in American history. I choose to be on the right side of it. The end of the day, we all bleed red. That’s all that matters,” Jessie answered in a dismissive tone to possible danger.
“But we’ve got the friends of humanity. These aren’t just street thugs,” The host pressed.
“I know. I know more about the friends of humanity than most folk, they don’t scare me none. Come at me. See what I’m made of,” Jessie responded.
“You’re that confident in your fighting ability?” The host inquired.
“Yes,” Jessie answered simply.
“Now, there’s a youtube video that some claim you uploaded,” The host hinted.
“I did upload it, and I really am lookin’ to hear from that person,” Jessie answered.
“Can you tell us a bit about her?”
Anger briefly flashed over Jessica's face before she responded, “Him. My friend is female to male transgender, it is derogatory for people to refer to him with female pronouns. I will not hear it, nor will I respond to questions of my friend with improper use of his preferred pronouns. Anyway, I grew up in Raleigh, I wasn’t born there. I was born in Nashville, Tennessee. We moved to North Carolina when my Dad got transferred. I was… about seven years old. So my first day of school, course everyone was pickin’ on me for bein’ the outsider…. And EJ right away just asked if I wanted to play together during recess and the rest, far as I’m concerned is history. We kinda figured early on that EJ wasn’t a girl like his parents tried to dress him to be. I knew he cut, I knew when he started drinkin’, smokin’, doin’ drugs… all of that stuff but he always had an A average grade, so I figured it was a desperate plight to escape what was goin’ on at home. One night… the night before EJ vanished actually umm, he’d stayed at my place… wore my brother Charlie's clothes, like normal. Since Charlie and EJ were close in size at that time. My Daddy called EJ’s Daddy and told him that he and my mom, who are both psychiatrists, suspected that EJ was transgender and what that meant what he hoped to see change for EJ. And the biggest change of all happened… the next mornin’ was the last time any of my family saw him. EJ just got into this huge fight with his folks when he got home… grabbed two bags and walked out. Never bothered comin’ back. Now I blame myself, a little. I mean, EJ’s my best friend I shoulda protected him more… my Daddy shoulda known better than to do what he did… but given EJ’s parents occupations I guess that they thought that they’d be more lenient… forgivin’. Ain’t no way that’s Mr. Thompson though he’s a stubborn one.”
“What do you mean, what are their occupations?” The host asked.
“Well, EJ’s mom is a school teacher, and his Dad is a pastor. Which, I can’t understand why anyone of any branch of Christianity would be against the LGBT community. I mean it’s right there in the bible, ‘He stitched their souls within their mother’s womb’. Your baby, is as they were meant to be at birth. Right at birth, they are who they are. You can try and teach ‘em to believe as you believe, but sooner or later, they’re gonna go back to that default. To how the Lord designed their souls to be,” Jessie replied.
“Is that why you chose the song ‘Hero’ for your video?” the host asked.
Jessie hesistated a moment before answering, “no. I used to…. EJ’d get beat up at school… I wasn’t always around to have his back. When he’d get down on himself, I’d either play that song and make him listen to it, or I’d sing it. Cause it’s true. There is a lot more to EJ than just what’s on the surface, and he is strong. I don’t doubt he’s alive somewhere… just wish I knew for sure is all.”
‘I’m not the same person you once knew,’ Zac thought to himself forlornly. His grip on the bottle of Dr. Pepper tightened.
‘And what the hell do you mean “come at me”? Jeez… maybe I should hunt you down just to show you what you’re really up against,’ Zac’s thoughts became angry at the danger she admitted to putting herself in.
How could she do that? Didn’t she value herself? Or even her own life?! He sighed heavily, and louder than he’d intended as his palm connected with his forehead.
“Geez, something’s brought you crashing down,” Sky’s voice broke the silence. It wasn’t a question… with her it never was. He’d swear she’d picked up some form of telepathy.
He meant to respond with an answer but wound up asking, “How the hell do you always know?”
“Pharamones. Your scent changes when you’re upset, afraid, or happy. Same with everyone else… I can literally smell your mood,” Sky replied, pointing to her nose.
Zac gave a prolonged, forceful blink at the new information as if he was struggling to process it, “That…. That’s a bit weird, Sky. Sorry but…”
“No worries… but I got a question, why is this interview upsetting you?” Sky asked.
Zac took a swig of his soda while his mind ran wild to find an answer without giving an answer, “just.. things I’d rather forget.”
“Oh,” Sky replied.
Zac nodded a bit, “Yeah.”
He eyed the bottle of Dr. Pepper, “So any chance at you gettin’ a boyfriend anytime soon?”
Sky blushed intensely as she stammered out, “Wh-whe-where’d th-tha-that c-come from?”
Zac chuckled at how flustered a simple question had made her and shrugged as he replied, “Change of subject.”
“I don’t know,” Sky admitted.
Zac eyed her, “Why not?”
“Because it’s… it’s weird. I mean… I… ugh... bug me about it when you get a girlfriend,” Sky fumbled before blurting out the last bit.
Zac smirked, “That’s a ways off, I think.”
He looked at the time and stood up, “I should get to bed.”
“That’s right… you’re going to school tomorrow, aren’t you?” Sky asked.
Zac nodded as he stretched and hid a yawn. Once the yawn finished he replied with, “Yeah. Only thing I could think to do. Kiara’s so on edge lately, it makes me wonder if she’s being bullied at school or something.”
“You’d really do anything for her, wouldn’t you?” Sky asked, a slightly sad undertone to her voice.
Zac nodded, “Yeah, I would.”
He looked to Sky, “You know… you’re the only one he lets into his room at night… when you have your nightmares. He won’t do that for anyone else, not even his sister.”
Sky blinked, her posture showing a slight improvement in her mood, “Really?”
Zac nodded, “Really… but if you wait too long, it’ll be illegal for two years. Just take a chance. Ya never know.”
He headed out of the room, pausing when his friend’s voice asked, “What about you?”
Zac wet his lips a little and sighed, “I don’t have the same choice.”
“Why? Because you’re different down there? Look, most girls… well I think actually most people, in their first relationship… they don’t want to rush. Ya know? So what if you have to wait… just wait til after the surgery and…”
“It’s a nine month wait, post op in some cases,” Zac interrupted.
“It’s just better this way… for now,” Zac added before running upstairs.
‘Don’t let her slip through your fingers,’ Sky thought to herself as she turned off the TV.
