William’s eyes widened slightly, “Logan.”
Logan snarled, keeping a scowl on his face, two claws now extended on either side of Stryker’s throat, with the third threatening to emerge with William’s body pressed up against a computerized control panel.
“Third one’s the charm, let her go,” Logan ordered.
William didn’t move, and kept his breathing steady.
“Did you forget that Uncle Jimmy still works here?” Elizabeth asked with a smirk.
“It doesn’t matter… the preliminary measures for the experiment are already in place… although it’s unlikely she will be able to bring it to fruition. I’ll just seek out another test subject,” William replied as he pressed a button on a control panel.
“What experiment?!” Logan growled out, now gripping Stryker’s throat with his other hand while the bone claws extended from it.
“As I said, you needn’t worry. The likelihood she’d go to term is microscopic,” William replied.
“If she’s even capable of producing a test subject, a body to define which parent passes on the advanced X-gene. It’s quite a subject. She’s the perfect candidate… not a single mutant in her family tree. I’ve done my research on the Stoner’s bloodline, as well as the Kimball’s. They’re fully human, every last one of them. So if this test subject is a mutant, it’ll be because of the father’s DNA,” William replied with a smirk.
“And she’ll be derailed from her career path,” He added with a sinister chuckle.
Logan gained a look of murderous rage on his face as he retracted his claws before pressing both fists up against Stryker’s ribcage.
Elizabeth’s voice rang out through the room, “James!”
He blinked and looked to her.
“Don’t prove him right. Don’t give in to him. Be the better man here, besides… you and I both know…” Elizabeth trailed off, feeling her eyes fog over with tears.
Logan snarled as he lowered his fists, but kept his glare on Stryker, “I quit.”
He walked over to the red haired teenager, and pressed a few buttons on a control panel, releasing her. She stirred, giving a soft groan of discomfort. Logan gently scooped her up into his arms bridal style and looked to William, “I’m taking her too.”
“You can’t take my main test subject however, I’ll claim parental interference,” William replied with the same maniacal grin.
“’Parental Interference’ my left tit,” Liz snapped before slapping William across his face.
“You mark my words, William Stryker, your days as a scientist are numbered,” She seethed through gritted teeth.
“They’re all animals, mutants. I don’t understand how Jason confused you into thinking otherwise. I took an oath to protect this country from all threats, both foreign, and domestic,” William answered.
“And that’s why you arranged for my father to be shot?” Elizabeth retorted.
William remained stoic and silent while Elizabeth glared him down for a bit.
She bit her lip a little as she looked to Jason, ‘I’m so sorry, Jason. I can’t this time either… but I will. The moment I hold enough political power to shut down Department K, that’s exactly what I intend to do.’
Logan looked to Elizabeth, “I can’t carry all of ya, kid. C’mon.”
Elizabeth nodded as she followed Logan out of the laboratory, leaving Jason and William behind.
Logan walked wordlessly beside Elizabeth, clutching the teenager close to himself as he headed towards the exit.
The girl stirred again and slowly blinked herself awake before she gained a hardened look on her face.
Elizabeth and Logan leaned off to either side of the hallway as the concreate walls began to break away.
Logan looked to the girl in his arms, “Calm down, kid. We ain’t gonna hurt ya.” He coaxed.
“Let me down, now,” The girl demanded.
Logan quickly obliged, letting the girl to her feet. Soon as she stood on her own, the debris stopped flying, and the walls held in place.
Elizabeth looked to the girl, “I’m Liz. What’s your name?”
The young teenager regarded Elizabeth for a moment before simply replying, “Jean.”
With that, Jean took off running through the hallways, Elizabeth and Logan began running as well.
‘She did that… it felt like she was gonna bring the whole barracks down on us,’ Logan thought to himself as he ran.
A few hours later Elizabeth was back in civilian clothing, sitting in a coffee shop with Logan. He wore a plaid shirt and blue jeans while Elizabeth was dressed in a purple sweater with blue jeans. She gently cupped the coffee mug in both hands before blowing on the hot beverage and sipping its contents.Logan watched her, “So what if you do end up…”
“I won’t get rid of it,” Elizabeth replied before Logan could finish.
“Lizzie, I’m gonna have ta go back to Lumberjackin’, it don’t make near enough to help with an infant,” Logan cautioned.
“I know, but don’t worry. I get the feeling… somehow, things will all work out,” Elizabeth responded.
“What about that guy ya been seein’? That uhh.. what… Pat Naylon?”
“Nate Payton,” Elizabeth answered with a slight chuckle, before her expression turned serious.
“We agreed to be just friends.”
Logan raised a brow, at this, “What? Does he bat for the other team?” He joked, but the look on Elizabeth’s face made him instantly regret it.
“Shit… Lizzie…”
“It’s alright. I should’ve guessed… I mean what straight guy would be okay with adoption over having his own biological children, right?” Elizabeth replied, biting her lip a little.
“Besides… my heart was never really with Nathaniel.”
“Jason,” Logan realized.
Elizabeth hesitated before slowly nodding and her voice lowered to a whisper as she admitted, “I was gonna give up. When I was sick… before the marrow donation… I… I was going stir crazy. I felt... I felt like that illness robbed me of everything. My childhood, my happiness… and when Jason found out… he created the illusion that we were outside. I know that in reality we were still in my hospital bed, staring up at the ceiling but in my mind…. We were laying on a grassy field… with a summer sun shining on us, warming us as we watched the shapes of the clouds in the sky. He saved my life… no matter if something happens between us or we just stay friends, I’ll always have that. And today… when Victor entered that room and shot me with that dart… I… I blacked out but as soon as I did, I went right back to that field… it was Jason. I guess with him not being fully frozen he was able to use his power to communicate with me. He was the one that pushed me to wake up… somehow… somehow he was able to help me do that.”
She looked to her stomach from the corner of her eye, ‘I’d bet it was Jason’s DNA that William was talking about. How would I be able to protect a baby from its own grandfather? I’d have to try. I’d have to do my best to look out for this baby… if I am pregnant.’
“I don’t know what solution will present its self, but rest assured… if I am expecting, this baby’s life is more important than my own,” Elizabeth stated.
Logan blinked a bit.
“I understand your maternal instincts, but to delay treatment at this point is suicide, Mrs. Stoner,” The doctor prompted.
“I will not sacrifice my child to save myself,” Deborah Stoner replied, placing a hand on the slight bump of her stomach.
“We’ve already tried for three years to have this baby. I will not give up on my child,” Deborah added with a fierceness to her tone.
The doctor looked to Logan, “Colonel Stoner said that you were the designated medical proxy if he was unable to attend and his wife incapable of rational decision…”
“What ain’t rational? It’s her body and her kid. I ain’t gonna tell her what to do,” Logan replied, crossing his arms over his chest.
“And that’s the end of it.”
“You sound like your mother,” Logan revealed with a small smile.
“And ya got her fiery attitude as well.”
“Dad never spoke of her,” Elizabeth admitted, her eyes downcast.
“I’ve never even seen a picture.”
Logan thought for a moment before taking out his wallet and leafing through before removing an item, and showing Elizabeth a picture of a blonde haired woman, frail, and sickly, but with a radiant smile, a single hand on her swollen pregnant stomach.
“Deborah Elizabeth Stoner… her maiden name was Kimball. Born in Kira Japan… the daughter of a soldier and his wife, orphaned young, raised in foster care… until she grew old enough to move out on her own. She worked as a waitress at the bar where I was a bar tender. It was near a military base, the soldiers often came in for a night cap. Helped to calm the nightmares so they could sleep, that’s how your folks met. She knew something’d happened in my past … and I ain’t gonna discuss it. Suffice it to say, any chance I had to help out a kid or a woman expectin’ one, I took it. She married your Dad when she was 21, and tried for three years before they conceived you. But shortly after she began noticing that she’d bruise easily, and she seemed to have a fever all the time… it was Leukemia. From the radiation her mother was exposed to while she was pregnant with Deb.”
He raised his eyes to meet Elizabeth’s stunned blue orbs.
“That’s when she approached me, asked me to be your Godfather. She didn’t know much… but she knew I could take a beatin’. I agreed to it, and I agreed to be her medical proxy if your Dad wasn’t around and she couldn’t make decisions. The doctors wanted to go ahead with chemo and radiation… but they told her it would likely end the pregnancy. Soon as she heard those words, she was against it. She argued adamantly that your life was what mattered most, not hers. Doctors thought she was crazy… but since I’d lost a kid before…. I knew where she was comin’ from. You just don’t heal from that kind o’ loss. I stood by your mom’s decision. Her condition kept getting’ worse, while you kept growin’ inside her. She gave birth to you, and then fell asleep. She never woke up again. But she got to see you for a few minutes… she got to hear your cry. I ain’ kiddin’, Liz… that first cry is the sweetest sound any parent can ever hear,” Logan explained.
“So that’s how… and my name comes from her,” Elizabeth thought aloud.
Logan gave a slight nod, “Keep the picture.”
Liz looked to Logan, “What? But…”
Logan shook his head ‘no’ in disagreement to her protest, “No buts. She was a friend to me… but she’s your mother.”
Elizabeth bit her lip a little before placing the picture into her purse, “Thank you.”
“Welcome,” Logan answered as he finished his coffee.
