PROMPT: 034 encounter
SENTENCE: #09 - King. You had no fucking reason to do that, I never asked you to be my damn knight, you snap at him after you find out he punched Bobby this morning in the middle of class for no reason at all and he gives you a fiery look, yeah you're right, Rogue, cause guess what, I'm your fucking King.
… and love said no
It's been two weeks since that day and you were naive enough to think they'd get forget all about it, get over it, but people still avoid you like you'd be a fucking plague planted upon them. A curse.
Which, you figure, isn't that far off from the truth anyway. Can't exactly blame them for fearing your skin, can you? Doesn't matter to them you didn't mean it this time either, just like you didn't mean it the first time it happened. That was long time ago, but now you realize they never really forgot the incident in the first place. They pretended, all of them.
You want to tell them, want to make them see the difference. Why the hell can't they understand, why can't they see it through your eyes for a change? That night you did it to save yourself. To heal the bleeding wounds Wolverine's sharp claws had made and it's not like you damaged him for good. It hurt, sure; hurt like hell but after visiting his head briefly, you know, for a fact, he's been through so much worse. I mean, come on, compared to everything that was like a bug bite, right?
You were hurt this time too, damnit. Bleeding, in pain. Just not physically, fine, you admit that.
Two weeks ago, for a reason you don't know and can't really say you'd want to either, John tried to crush you. Maybe you're stronger than he gives you credit for, whatever, but he didn't manage to break you. Shatter your world into millions of transparent pieces and break your heart, that's what he managed.
You can't remember it exactly, but it couldn't have been more than a few minutes after John's little announcement till you'd already made up your mind. You glanced over your shoulder before turning around completely. Stared at him with a straight face, saying nothing and then… ignored John and the smug smirk on his face. You stepped aside, shoulder brushing his arm and walked away.
He laughed, but you ignored that too. There was only one thing on your mind - finding Bobby.
He's lying; it's a mistake.
Yeah, being the naive little girl you always are when you face something you don't want to handle. All the way to his dorm, your mind kept fiercely defending Bobby, kept telling you John's nothing but a jealous little boy, a liar, a jerk. Find Bobby and he'll tell you the truth. He'll smile, kiss you and chase away the suspicions.
The cat lady, that's how John called her and it pisses you off that you know instantly whom he means. Sure, you've seen them together… you've had your doubts, but the last thing you want is John to share them with you. He's the one person you don't want to let inside your head and the fact he always does it so easily… it angers you, makes you uncomfortable.
"Bobby?" You called, knocking his door once simply out of habit before stepping in.
And what you saw killed you inside.
She was there. Kitty. She was lying on the bed on her stomach, a math book in front of her and he was sitting next to her, laughing about something. And you remember the anger boiling warm, remember thinking maybe they're laughing at you, at your stupidity. Oh man, they've must had so much fun on your expense.
"Rogue, hey," Bobby greeted you with a smile. He didn't seem to register the look on your face, but Kitty did. She's a girl, after all. "Hey hon, we're just doing some homework," she explained, gathering her bones and sitting up. It was a miracle you didn't go and rip her apart right there and then. You wanted to, gods, how you wanted to. The shadowed expression on her face told you she knew exactly how you felt but wasn't sure what to do about it.
"Sure," you practically snarled, "Great." Of all the idiots in the world, why did he have to be the one to tell you? Gods. There's no such thing as justice.
That meeting, as expected, didn't end that nice. There was yelling and screaming, accusations, lies. Violence.
You didn't mean it, honestly, you didn't. You threw it at their face, made it clear you know everything and she tried saying something, tried to lie. But you weren't having that, no, so you told her not to come near, you told her to stay away but she didn't listen and you, you were so angry that you didn't think and-
"Hey, Rogue!" It's Jubilee's voice, drawing you out of your head, out of your memories. You see her enter the common room where you've been occupying the couch for the past hour and she sits next to you, throwing her bag on the floor.
"Hey, babe," you return and smile to hide all traces of your previous thoughts, "what's up?"
She looks at you, eyebrows raised which is a clear sign telling you something's happened. "You don't know, do you?" She sounds surprised and amused, both at the same time.
You shake your head, "Know what?"
Jubilee doesn't reply right away. Instead she studies your face as if to determinate if you're actually serious or just pulling a stunt on her. But you're not and so, after a moment, she finally decides to come clean. "Pyro," she starts and just the mention of that particular name makes your spine crawl nastily, "he just punched Bobby in the classroom."
You're on your feet before you know it, looking down at her, all puzzled and shocked. "He what?" You shriek, "Is Bobby okay?"
"Dude," Jubilee snorts, cocking her head disapprovingly and you know what she's gonna say next. "Did you forget that jerk cheated on you with one of your friends?" Yeah, maybe you did.
"He totally deserved that one," she continues obviously pleased. The smirk on her face says a lot. Maybe she's right and maybe you should feel pleased too, but really, you don't. You can't… and you don't understand why.
Later that day, while walking towards your dorm, you run into John in the hallway. You decide to ignore him, and you do, you walk right past him and the only thing giving you away is the way your hands grip tighter around the books you're holding against your chest. But he doesn't let you off the hook, never does, no.
"What, come on, Marie," he speaks, stopping you to the spot, "Not gonna thank me for defending your honor?"
You forget your decision to ignore the bastard and spin around, frowning, "What?" Defending your honor? What kind of sick joke is this, huh? Doesn't he ever get tired of the damn mind games?
"Christ, Marie, you don't know?" He questions, amused and you could swear even his eyes are laughing. There's this dangerous gleam in them, the kind that always makes you feel like a little gazelle being watched by a hungry panther. Not a feeling you'd say you enjoy, but you've learnt to tolerate.
"About you hitting Bobby?" you return with a pitying smirk of your own matching his perfectly.
John's smile twists and if possible, morphs into more playful. "You do know," he notes, tilting his head to one side and you try not to notice how damn good he looks.
"Yeah, I know about it," your reply is meant to sound cold but you don't think it did. Try harder, speak your mind. "And no, I'm not. You had no fucking reason to do that. I never asked you to be my damn knight."
.
Then the smirk on his face is no longer playful, but angry. How he's able to go from mischievous to furious in a matter of seconds is beyond to you, but not something you'd doubt. He's got one rattling personality and from experience, you can tell it comes with a whole scale of mood swings.
"Yeah," he hisses then, freezing your breathing, "you're right, Rogue, cause guess what?"
Gods, if a look could kill…
"I'm your fucking King," he finishes and with that said, without waiting for your reply, he storms away and you're left alone to wonder just what the hell he meant by it.
