“Slow down!
I can’t understand jibberish!”
Kitty
sniffed hard, glaring balefully at Rogue through tear-soaked lashes. “You can understand Todd but you can’t
understand me when I’m crying?”
“Yeah, go
figure…” She held out the half empty box
of tissues and shook it slightly to direct Kitty’s
attention to the contents. “Blow.”
Kitty
obediently took two tissues from the box and blew her nose noisily. “I sound like a goose,” she mourned. “A big, weepy, goose!”
Sighing,
Rogue tosses the box back onto her bed and tentatively laid a friendly hand on
Kitty’s shoulder. “No, you don’t. It’s
more duck like.”
A briefly
offended snort was followed by a weak laugh. “Ducks are cute so that’s okay, I
guess.”
Rogue
waited patiently while Kitty blew her nose again and retrieved a fresh tissue
to dab at her eyes. “So you gonna tell
me why you’re all cryin’ or do I get to guess?” Her head hurt—being around crying people
always made her uncomfortable and biting back her initial urge to tell Kitty to
stop it, get over it and get out was harder than she thought. _She’s my friend. I can’t be a bitch just because I get weirded out by weeping.
_
“Kurt and I
had a fight,” Kitty began, then paused. The look that
had come over Rogue’s face was one of bored resignation tinged with
annoyance. “I mean it! It was a
fight! It wasn’t something stupid like
he looked at Amanda’s ass or something!”
“Fine, fine…
tell me what happened.” Rogue stretched
out on her bed, propping her chin in her hands and looking blandly at
Kitty. _I swear, if this is something
stupid, I’m going to pinch her… _
Kitty
scowled. _What the Hell do people here
think of me anyway? Does everyone think
I’m some sort of twit and all I care about is shopping and Kurt? _ Her need to talk
was too great, though, and instead of turning away or bowing out of the burgeoning
conversation gracefully, she found herself speaking. “Kurt doesn’t want me to move to Chicago
for a semester. I have a chance to work
with some really great professors and get a ton of advanced credits if I go to Chicago
for a few months but all Kurt hears is that I’m thinking about moving and he
gets all offended. It’s like he wasn’t
even listening to me after I said ‘Chicago’.” She stared down at her hands in her lap,
noticing that two of her nails were uneven, wondering distantly when that had
happened, when had she broken them, while replaying
the entire scene with Kurt over in her mind. “We ended up yelling at each other… he said I
just wanted to run away from this place and I said he was being selfish. He said the same thing to me and…” she
trailed off, torn between being angry and being depressed. “I came to you because you won’t be nice
about it.”
“Huh?” Rogue sat up, uncertain what to make of Kitty’s
statement. “You think I’m going to be a
bitch about it just because I don’t do drama?”
Her eyes narrowed slightly and her mouth was set in a harsh line, ready
to tear into Kitty for making assumptions.
“No,” Kitty
sighed, closing her eyes. “I came to you
because you don’t *do* drama. Jubilee
would be sweet and all but she’d try to tell me to do all these convoluted
things to ‘make it up to him.’ Amara
would suggest using sex to get my way.
And Jean…” She sighed, shaking her head.
“Jean’s got enough problems right now.
And Rahne’s so knee deep in AP Biology…”
Rogue motioned
for her to be quiet, waving a hand negligently. “I get it, I get it… I think I’m
flattered, and I get it.” She let out a long breath before
continuing. “So what do you want me to
do? Tell you he’s in the wrong? Tell you that you’re doing the right thing?”
“The right thing?” Kitty laughed mirthlessly. “It’s not even a ‘thing’ yet! I’m just thinking about going. I haven’t even heard from the head of the
program yet… there’s a good chance I won’t get in. There’s a lot of
people in the program smarter than me, better than me…” She smoothed her hands over her jeans and
tugged at her ponytail as if making sure it were secure and in place. “I just don’t understand why he’s so angry
with me for doing this.”
“Kurt… has
issues,” Rogue sighed. “Many, many issues.” She sat up, crossing her legs in a half lotus
position and scooting close to Kitty, pushing the box of tissues between
them. “Look, he’s angry probably because
he thinks you’re abandoning him, you know?
I mean, he might not think it consciously but the boy’s got some hard
core abandonment issues…”
Kitty
blinked, her lips parting at first to deny the claim then to accept it. “I know,” she said quietly. “I just guess I thought he’d know better when
it came to me.”
“I bet he’s
off with Scott or someone right now, saying he feels bad for snapping at you
and he doesn’t know what came over him,” Rogue suggested, handing over another
tissue so Kitty could stave off her runny nose.
“I don’t know what to tell you, though.
I can’t give you any idea as to how to make your choice but Kit… I love
ya, you know that, and I want you to be happy.
I love Kurt, too, and I want HIM to be happy… Y’all work it out.”
Kitty
groaned under her breath. “Easier said than done… this is our first big fight. I mean, the Amanda thing last year was kinda critical but this… Rogue, he’s never *yelled* at me
like that before!”
“I think
this is where Amara or Jubilee might actually be useful,” Rogue muttered. “Look, the two of you are gonna need to sit
down and have a come to Jesus meeting.”
“I’m Jewish…”
“It’s an
expression!” Rogue sighed in exasperation.
“Y’all need to sit down and talk about what you both want in the future
and how you plan on gettin’ there.”
“Ew. Sounds like a planning meeting.” Kitty wrinkled her nose and shuddered
theatrically. She was feeling better now
that she had said it all aloud and Rogue was not telling her that Kurt was
right or that she was being selfish herself.
She was not quite sure what she had expected from talking to the
Southerner but she was glad she had decided to do it.
“It is,”
Rogue smiled. “And the best part is, it doesn’t happen in my room.”
Kitty
laughed. “Okay, okay, I can take a hint!”
She stood and tugged the hem of her sweater down over her hips. Grinning slightly, she added, “How’s Todd?”
“Out!”
Laughing
still, Kitty phased herself out into the hall only to
run almost head first into Jean. “Hey,”
she smiled. “I thought you were in town
this morning.”
Jean
scowled. “Plans change,” she said
tersely. “Have you seen Beast?”
“Not since
breakfast…” Kitty stepped aside as Jean strode
past, anger snapping off of her like electricity. “Jean?”
“If you see
him, tell him I said it doesn’t work!” the red head called over her shoulder as
she went down the stairs, her booted footsteps sharp on the marble and wood.
“What didn’t
work?”
“He’ll
know!”
