part 28

Inner Conflicts -- Part 28 Inner Conflicts Part 28 "Okay, what is it that you want?" asked Rogue, feeling a bit peeved about all the cloak and dagger type moves that she was being put through. "Hold on, we're almost there," replied Kitty. "This better be worth missing lunch," said Rogue.  She wasn't normally hungry, but today she was starving.  She only hoped that she could hold up until after school.  Maybe Scott would stop by some place and get her food. Kitty and Rogue rounded one corner of the school's halls and ducked into a room. Tabitha waited, pacing nervously across the room. Rogue paused.  "What is she doing here?" she asked. "Hey, Goth girl, I have some info that might concern you." "Yeah? Like what?" Tabitha turned to Kitty.  "Did you tell her anything yet?" Kitty shook her head.  "I, like, figured you could break it to her," she admitted, looking very much ashamed. "Coward." "Break what?" asked Rogue, feeling, and looking peeved. "The whole Lance and Kurt thing." "What about it?  I mean, they're friends, right?" "You could say that," snorted Tabitha. "Like, Lance is bad news to Kurt," Kitty interjected. "Whatever happened to the whole 'Lance isn't that bad' spiel you were going on just a few days ago?" asked Rogue, raising an eyebrow. "She found out the truth," responded Tabitha. "The truth?  So Lance really did brainwash Kurt or something into joining them?" "Worse. He fucking warped Kurt's brain into thinking that they are in love with each other." Rogue was floored.   "I didn't want to believe it myself, but I saw...I saw Lance beat Kurt...and Kurt didn't do anything in return!!" Kitty's face was filled with anguish. "I mean, all this time, I thought he was changing, being nice to Kurt and all.  But then... well, Tabitha saw most of it." Rogue looked at Tabitha.  Kurt? Thinking he was in love with Lance?  Lance, beating up on Kurt? No! She couldn't believe that... she wouldn't!  Maybe they saw wrong.  "How do you know they really aren't... ugh... you know?" "Because I came across the drugs that Lance was feeding Kurt!" claimed Tabitha. "Did you keep them?" "No... I threw them away thinking he was probably going to try to use them on Kitty." "What?!" "But then I actually saw them... you know... and I wasn't thinking!" Rogue was trying real hard to keep breathing.  "And now you say he hits him?!" "Yes!! We need your help to get Kurt away from him.  You're one of the people he likes to talk to. He'll probably think that Kitty is trying to take Lance away, and he might think that I'm jealous or something." Rogue nodded, as anger began to swell inside her.  "I think I'll have a little talk with Lance during lunch," she growled. X Kurt rounded the corner and almost collided with someone.   "I-I'm sorry," he stammered, as he looked up to see who he had almost ran to the ground. To his surprise, it was none other than Tabitha. "Tabby! What are you doing here?" "I want to talk to you," she said. "About what?" Kurt brushed at his clothes.  "I have to get to lunch so I can meet Lance..." "That's what I want to talk about.  Did he do this to you?" Tabitha reach out and caressed his cheek, the one she knew was still swollen despite the hologram. Kurt winced as he pulled away.  "I-no! He, well, yes, but, no!" Tabitha's face looked grim as Kurt continued to stammer out his words, as if trying to come up with just the right reason behind his injury. Just like she use to. . . "I need to go," Kurt just blurted out, and bamfed out of sight. "Tomorrow," muttered Tabitha.  "Tomorrow you'll see what a two timing bastard Lance is, if you won't believe us." X Lance stood around, looking and feeling very much anxious. He didn't trust Tabitha, and although the others seemed to take it all in stride, he was concerned that his fellow team mates might try to sabotage his relationship.  After all, they could never understand the rush of power it gave him.   People moved around him, enjoying their last few minutes of lunch. Dammit, where was he? Out of his peripheral vision, Lance saw a bare hand reaching for his face. Out of sheer instinct, Lance pulled his head away and leapt over the nearest table.  Whirling around, he spotted a real mad looking Rogue, glove in one hand. "What the fuck are you trying to do?" he growled, heart racing at the close call. "I want to know the truth," she said.  "Just what are you doing to Kurt?" Lance gave her a sharkish grin.  "Things that will never get done to you," he replied. Rogue cried out in anger as she launched herself over the table. Lance leapt back, keeping his distance, laughing the entire time. "Come back here!" she shouted. Students began to gather as the wofighfight" spread through out the campus. Lance just laughed as he danced around the group that was building a wall around them. "Come on, Rogue.  Go ahead, shout out your questions.  Do you really want everyone to know what is going on?" Rogue froze.  God, if everyone knew that Lance and Kurt were. . . were. . . he would never forgive her! "Rogue, what is going on?!" she heard a male voice cry out as arms grabbed her from behind. Lance took the opportunity to bale. "Scott, let me go!" Rogue shouted, struggling.  "God dammit!!" She felt Scott let her go and she turned around to face him.  Despite his glasses, he looked like he was in utter shock, as was Jean and Evan behind them. She sighed.  "Scott, I need to talk to you about Kurt.  And I need to talk to the Professor." "What's wrong with Kurt?" asked Evan. Rogue remained silent, despite the questioning looks she got from all three of them. She couldn't let Evan know, but Scott. . . she had seen the protectiveness Scott had with Kurt.  He had to know.  "Later." X "Where were you?" "I. . . Tabitha was trying to t-talk to, I'm sorry for making you wait." Lance shook his head.  "Come on.  Let's blow this place." Kurt offered a small smile as he took Lance's hand and ported themselves away. X Pietro scratched the back of his head.  "Um, like sure we'll help, but. . . like, we don't want Lance finding out or anything." "Cowards!" muttered Tabitha.  "Fine.  Tomorrow, all you guys need to do is monitor everyone's moves.  This all goes down right after school. Got that?" "Got it," muttered Freddy, as Toad looked relieved.  "No direct involvement, 'ey?" he asked, one last time. Tabitha nodded.   X Professor Xavier frowned as he heard everything Kitty and Rogue had to say to him. Scott was silent. "This is a matter that should be taken to the police," he said. "But if we do that, the chances of everyone finding out what we are becomes higher!" Scott broke his silence.  "Not to mention that it would put Kurt in public view.  This could break him completely." "Finding out that his so called love is using him might break him," growled Kitty. "Professor...Kurt wouldn't want this made public if there was a way to go around it.  Pl, le, let us try to handle it tomorrow.   If not, then we can use the authorities." Rogue pleaded with her eyes. Xavier sighed. "Fine.  I will await word on your progress.  But this situation can not go any further than tomorrow.  If necessary, we will have to resort to force and bring Kurt out of there." Scott, Rogue, and Kitty gave one quick sharp nod. Tomorrow would be the day.  But a sense of dread filled them.  Would everything turn out okay?  Or would things be worse? tbc
