Readers/Reviewers: Updates might not
happen this weekend. Maybe. Sort of. In the mean time… yay,
plot!
Jubilee
crossed her legs into a half-lotus position, resting her chin on her
interlocked fingers as she leaned on her knees with her elbows. “This just
keeps getting better and better…”
Kitty
frowned and jerked her ponytail back into place with a twist of her wrist. “Oh, shut up.
I love you, Jubes, but shut up…” She bent over the control panel column again and tapped in a
series of commands, drawing back slightly as the device made a whirring,
clicking sound. She seemed to think for
a long moment, then hauled off and hit it with the flat of her hand. The noise stopped and the column retreated
back into the floor, a metal plate sliding back into place over the space. “There.
All better.”
“I don’t
think that’s on the approved list of ways to fix the Danger Room,” Jubilee
pointed out, not moving from her place on the floor. “Logan
won’t be happy about you beating up his torture chamber.” She refused, resolutely, to look at Remy. She
could feel his eyes on her and knew if she looked, she would go to him. She had been thinking, since the night
before, about working things out, dealing with his personality and hers and
their conflicts, but she refused to let herself do it. _If I cave, he’ll think it’s
okay to run away without telling me he’s leaving. I can’t let him keep treating me like this…
_
“Logan,”
Kitty said with a grunt, shoving a sliding metal door set into the wall closed,
covering another panel, this one an array of blinking lights and a spaghetti
bowl of wires only Kitty seemed to know the purpose of, “says so long as I keep
it running, he doesn’t care how I do it.
Okay, the sim will start in thirty
seconds. Ish.”
“Ish?” Remy drawled, unfolding
from his seated position with his usual grace, his bo held lightly in one hand as he propped the other
on his hip. “Qu’est-ce que c’est
‘ish’?[1]”
Jubilee
stood, dusting her hands on her yellow coat.
“Ish means duck, Gumbo,” she said casually,
launching herself at Kitty and tackling her friend to the ground as one of the
whip-like devices programmed for that particular sim
shot out of the wall.
Gasping,
Kitty shoved Jubilee off and sat up.
“That,” she breathed, “is *not* the sim that’s
supposed to be running!”
“Nope,” Logan’s
voice came over the intercom, his grin obvious in his tone. “It’s the one I just put on… What’s the point of preparedness training if
you know what’s comin’? Amara an’ Lance are next in line so don’t
take too long getting’ your butts kicked.”
Kurt
frowned as he looked past Logan’s
arm, down into the Danger Room proper.
Kitty narrowly missed being hit by a heavy metal disc that whanged off the wall behind her and glanced off Remy’s bo. “Isn’t this going rather fast?” he asked with
more than a hint of worry.
Logan
shrugged. “Gotta keep on your toes, Elf. No pun intended,” he added with a glance at
Kurt’s posture. “If I keep puttin’ up the same sims,
over and over, you don’t learn anything new. You get into a rut then when
you’re out in a real situation, where you’ll have to think in new ways and do
different things, you’ll freeze up. This
way, you never learn what to expect.
Things don’t go like you planned and when you survive,
you come out of it with somethin’ new.”
Kurt
snorted softly, his eyes on Kitty and Jubilee as the worked together to
outmaneuver one of the devices in the simulation. “If you survive,” he muttered. “This doesn’t look safe, Logan.”
“You can’t
live your life stayin’ safe all the time,” he
responded dryly. “You’ll still get
hurt. Just not as
fulfilling.” He tapped the intercom
button, leaning forward to speak. “Keep
your eyes open, LeBeau.”
Remy’s
response, something rude and Cajun, was cut off as Logan
took his finger off the button. “It’s
not so bad, being safe,” Kurt replied, pressing his forehead against the protective
glass affording them a view of the action below. “Being safe is a good thing, usually.”
“Jean lived
a safe life and she nearly died,” Logan
pointed out. “Don’t gimme
that look. I ain’t being mean. I’m just telling you the truth. Jean’s pretty damned sick right now but did
she do anything dangerous? More so than the rest of you? Nope.
It was a freak occurance, some virus or bug
that got to her and nearly killed her.
She’s lucky she’s awake and not brain damaged, from what they were sayin’ this morning.”
Kurt was
silent for a long moment. Below him,
Jubilee sent a spray of paffs flying in response to
one of the projectiles buzzing through the room, the brightly colored plasma
fireworks momentarily blinding him. “Scheisse,” he hissed, rubbing at his eyes with his
fingertips. “Being safe,” he said,
ignoring Logan’s snort of amusement
at his swearing, “doesn’t guarantee a long life, you’re right, but it is better
than throwing yourself into danger without reason.”
Logan
raised a brow and leaned back in the control room chair. “Kid, if you’re going to go through life
playing it safe and not wanting anything to change for fear it’ll be risky,
you’re gonna miss out on a Hell of a lot.”
A sharp cry
went up from the Danger Room and the entire system powered down, bright white
light flooding the metal-walled room as the sim cut
off and the stand-by system went into effect.
“Logan,” Kitty’s voice came
over the speakers in the control room, sounding breathless and panicked, “get
Beast. One of those thingies just bonked
Jubilee…”
