Chapter 24
"Must you make that maddening sound?" Loki fumes at Thor as he is sharpening a knife.
"Patience brother. This mission will be over soon and we will have you reunited with your lady before you know it," Thor responds calmly, but he sets down the knife knowing that Loki is very much on edge. They have been gone for weeks and although they have managed to locate and capture most of Freyr's conspirators, one has managed to elude them.
"When will that infernal scout return?" Loki snaps as he stands and begins to pace around the small room they have been using as a base.
"Loki, be calm. He will report back when he has a lead for us." Standing, he walks over to Loki and places a hand on his shoulder to stop him. "Why don't you look in on her? I will keep watch and then you can recover while we wait." When Loki looks at him skeptically he adds, "I will keep watch while you rest. I know it taxes you, but you need to be focused and ready when the time comes to move on Freyr's sister." Thor tells him knowing that Loki will be exhausted after using so much energy to check on Shelia. He had done it shortly after leaving the palace on this mission and it took several days for him to fully recover. Since then he had been relentless in pursuing the conspirators, hoping to end this task and return home, but Thor knows that Loki misses her and is worried about her so he will not be able to fully focus on the mission when the time comes. "Loki, ease your mind. This may be your last chance."
Loki says nothing, just stares at Thor, torn between his desire to check on Shelia and the worry that he will not be ready to complete the mission when the time comes. The conflict is clearly written on his face. After a few more moments of indecision, his desire to see her finally wins out. He nods to Thor and squeezes his forearm in thanks then retreats to the bed in the corner of the little room. He lays down and closes his eyes while deepening his breath with each inhalation. As Thor watches he is in awe of Loki's abilities, Loki's expression softens and his entire body seems to relax as it becomes less solid before Thor eyes.
She is curled up in the large chair by the window with a blanket covering her. A book lays forgotten on her lap as she stares out the window. A small smile plays at the corner of her mouth as she twirls a lock of hair in her fingers. She looks beautiful. His heart aches at the thought of not being with her, but just seeing her, in this peaceful state, eases his mind.
Shelia turns away from the window and scans the room with a slight frown. Then she smiles,
"Loki. Is that you?" She feels a little foolish for talking to herself but it's as if she can sense him. His presence. His power. His strength and determination. She feels comforted and a little less alone so she continues, "I miss you. Be careful and come back soon." She places a hand on her belly tempted to say something about the child within her womb, but decides it would be best to wait until he returns. She isn't quite sure how he will react to the news.
Hearing her words causes Loki to release the breath he had been holding. He is relieved and withdraws back to his body where he regains full awareness. Thor is close by anxiously waiting to find out what Loki has seen. "Well my brother? We're you able to see her?" he asks.
Loki attempts to sit up before answering. His body is exhausted from the strain though and he struggles to lift himself. "Stay down, rest," Thor tells him placing a hand on his chest to keep him from trying to get up.
"I saw her Thor. Thank you," Loki tells him with a small smile. Showing gratitude like this is not something he is used to. Truthfully, the feeling of gratitude is foreign to him and he is left wondering about the changes he has undergone since literally crashing into Shelia's life. He falls asleep thinking about the smile on her face and how beautiful she looked.
Thor doesn't press his brother for more of an answer. He doesn't need to. The calmness that he can feel radiating off of him is answer enough. Now he can rest and recover so that when the scout returns they will be ready to move against Freyr's sister Freya.
Back in Loki's room Shelia goes back to looking out the window. She can no longer feel his presence. After her talk with Frigga, she knows it is dangerous for him to come to her, but she cannot deny how happy she is to be able to feel him. She loves him and even though she is not sure what will happen when he returns, does not know how he will react to her news and does not know what Odin will finally decide about his fate, she is happy in this moment.
Within the hour the scout bursts into the room where Thor is keeping watch over his sleeping brother. "I found her!" he says in a rush, out of breath from running back to report in.
"What? Where is she?" Thor asks jumping up from his seat.
"She is hiding near the docks."
"Good. When Loki is ready we can go after her," Thor tells him glancing to where Loki is laying. "Tell me everything you know."
The scout takes a deep breath and begins to tell Thor what he discovered. Thor knows Loki will not be ready for a least another few days so he makes the decision to send the scout back out. "Go back and watch her. Don't let her out of your sight. Report back in 2 days time."
"Yes sir, I won't let you down," he says as he gathers up supplies for the next few days.
When the scout leaves, Thor begins to make plans to capture Freya. The docks are a crowded area with lots of innocents so he must take extra care.
Hours later
"Thor!" the scout shouts as he bursts through the door into the little room. "Wake up! Thor!"
"What is the meaning of this?" Thor asks as he stands from the bed summoning Mjlonir to his hand. Glancing out the window he can tell it is the middle of the night. Then he looks back to the scout for an explanation. The scout is looking intently at Loki who is still sleeping where he was earlier. "Boy! Explain you now!" he demands raising Mjlinor slightly.
"Yes sir." he begins, "Freya is making preparations to return to Vanaheim. If you don't go now she will get away."
Instantly Thor understands the implications of what the scout has said, all of the consequences if she slips away again and they must continue this hunt in another realm, but he knows Loki is not yet ready to go on this mission. Looking to his brother Thor weighs his options.
Growing impatient the scout pushes, "you don't have much time. If she gets away it could take months to track her on Vanaheim. Why do you delay?"
"I know what is at stake boy!" Thor roars. "My brother is not able to accompany me on this task and I cannot leave him alone in this condition. He still has many enemies in the realms." He is torn, knowing each minute he delays with indecision the chance to end this grows smaller and smaller. He also knows that if he had not insisted Loki use his magic to visit Shelia, he would be physically able to help.
"I will stay and keep watch over Loki until you return," the scout volunteers.
"What?"
"I will stay here with your brother. You can go capture Freya. She is alone. I haven't seen any one else with her. It shouldn’t be hard for you. Go and capture her and I will make sure Loki is cared for while you are gone. This can finally be over," he adds calmly.
"Yes. I like this plan. Come, let's make preparations. I leave within the hour." Turning to Loki he adds, "I will end this for you bother."
