Chapter 22
Frigga escorts Shelia back to Loki's room. "Feel free to explore. He wanted you to know that you are welcome to anything in here.
"Thank you Frigga. I appreciate everything you have done for us," Shelia tells her as she sits on the bed. She runs her hand across the bedding thinking about laying in Loki's arms just a few hours ago. While she is lost in thought Frigga slips out of the room and closes the door behind her. When she hears the door close she looks up and realizes she is alone.
"What am I doing?" She yells as she throws herself back on the bed and cries until she falls asleep It is several hours later when she finally wakes up. Realizing it has been quite a while since her last meal she cleans herself up and heads out to the dining hall.
"So you're the one that tamed Loki?" a female voice says behind her.
Shelia turns to see a dark haired woman dressed in armor fixing herself a plate of food. "I am Sif, friend to Thor and Loki."
"Ok. Yeah, Loki told me a little about you," Shelia tells her as she gestures to a spot at her table for Sif to sit.
"Well don't believe half of what he said about me," she laughs, taking the offered seat.
Shelia smiles at the joke and looks down at her food, suddenly not really hungry anymore.
"I know you're worried about him, but Loki and Thor are the two best warriors in the realm. They will be back before you know it," Sif reassures her.
"I'm just not used to this. I mean, I knew, but I've never had to deal with something like this. Back home it was easy to forget that all this exists," Shelia says with a sigh.
"This is our way. So I can't say that I understand what you are going through, but I am here if you need someone to talk to," Sif offers.
"Thank you," Shelia responds. "Can you tell me what Loki was like as a boy?"
With a laugh Sif begins, "Oh yeah, do I have stories."
Later back in Loki's room Shelia begins to look through the endless bookshelves. Many books are about magic and she skips past those, but pulls out several that look like history books. She is eager to learn what she can about Loki's world. The need to feel close to him is almost overwhelming. She sits at his large desk and opens the first book in the stack she pulled. Within a few minutes she is engrossed in reading about the history of Asgard. As she studies a map of the palace grounds she is startled when she feels something brush across her cheek. She wipes her hand across her cheek and goes back to looking over the map. When she feels something brush her skin a second time she looks up and for a brief moment thinks she see's Loki standing there. Instead of being frightened by this apparition she feels a sense of comfort and intense longing.
Sif has invited her to watch a training session the next morning so she decides to try to sleep. Crawling into the bed she presses her face into Loki's pillow to take in his scent. It doesn't take long before she falls into a deep sleep.
Her days fall into a routine of watching Sif train then having lunch with her. She spends her afternoons exploring the palace grounds using the maps in the book from Loki's room. Her evenings are taken up with reading and studying the large collection of objects on the bookshelves.
After a week of this Sif offers to begin training her to use a sword. These lessons leave her sweaty and tired from the physical exertion, but she is grateful for the distraction and companionship. Within a couple of weeks she is showing progress. "Strike! Again! Yes! Again! Don't forget your footing!" Sif commands. Shelia is working on her form against a log suspended from the ceiling of the room. Her arms ache and sweat is running down her face.
"I need a break,” she gasps, lowering her arms.
"Are you alright?" Sif asks."You look really pale."
"I don't feel so good. A little dizzy," she answers lowering herself onto the floor.
"Why don't we call it a day then," Sif offers. "You should go back to your room and rest."
"That's probably a good idea," Shelia relents and after a few minutes raises to her feet and turns to walk back to her room. Her legs feel wobbly and her hand shakes as she reaches to open the door. Even though she is in need of a shower, she heads to the bed and lays down. An hour later she wakes up and runs into the bathroom to throw up.
"Getting sick, just what I need," she tells her reflection as she takes in her pale skin and the dark circles under eyes. She splashes some water on her face and heads back to bed.
When she wakes up the next day she still feels sick and decides to skip training with Sif in order to stay in bed and rest more. This is where Frigga finds her when she comes to check on her after Shelia didn't come to the dining hall for lunch or dinner.
"Do you want me to summon Dr. Banner?" Frigga asks her.
"No, I'm sure it's nothing. Probably been over doing it lately, trying to keep myself occupied."
"You must keep yourself in good health. It won't do for Loki to be distracted while he is on this mission," Frigga tells her.
"How would he even know I'm not well? Have you had contact with him?" Shelia asks excitedly.
"No there has been no word from him or Thor, but I know my son and have no doubt that he will check on you."
"How?"
"Loki has very powerful magic. He has ways of splitting his consciousness and seeing into other places, but it can be very taxing and the more he does it, the more it drains him."
"I understand," she says remembering the way she briefly thought she saw Loki in the room a few weeks ago. "If I am not feeling better by tomorrow I will see Dr. Banner," Shelia relents.
"I will have some food brought for you. Try to eat and then rest. I will check on you in the morning," Frigga tells her as she leaves.
A short while later a servant brings a tray of fruits, crackers, and cheeses to her room. Sitting up she starts to reach for an apple but is overcome by another bout of nausea. When it subsides she eats a few crackers and then lays down to sleep again hoping that she will feel better in the morning.
She is awoken by a knock at the door. She sits up as Frigga enters the room carrying a tray with breakfast. "How are you feeling this morning?"
"I'm ok," Shelia lies.
"Really?" Frigga responds incredulous. "Why don't you eat some breakfast then?" The queen tells her, putting the tray down in front of her. Immediately Shelia's stomach does a flip and she breaks for the bathroom. "That's what I thought. I will summon Dr. Banner immediately," she calls out as she leaves the room.
Shelia sits on the bathroom floor in front of the commode and cries silent tears. "Why is this happening?" she wails to the empty room. When she is finally able to stand she enters the shower to try and make herself feel better. Leaning against the stone wall she let's the warm water cascade down her body. For this brief few moment she feels almost normal. Just very tired. She washes her hair and let's the water run down her back, relaxing her muscles. She steps out of the shower and dries herself then pulls on a pair of leggings and a shirt then heads back into the bedroom.
Grabbing Loki's pillow and a blanket she curls up into a chair with the pillow close to her face so his scent can comfort her. She picks up the book she has been reading and runs her hands across the worn leather cover. Picturing Loki's hands holding the same book, his fingers turning the pages, the small smile on his lips as he takes in the love story, the tiny crease between his eyes as he concentrates on the battle scenes and the look of lust on his face as the hero finally consummates his love with his bride. How she misses him...
