Saturday
was well on the way to Sunday by the time Jubilee managed to find her way to
the library. The pizza had been gross,
she thought, more grease than actual food, and she felt bad for saying
something because Kitty seemed to take it personally. The usually cheerful girl had nibbled around
the edges of her own vegetarian slice before abandoning it and trudging to her
room without even looking at anyone, least of all Kurt. “Girls are weird,” Jubilee muttered, heading
for a bookshelf that looked promising.
“Yeah, we
cultivate it in junior high,” Rogue’s voice rose from behind a stack of
atlases. Sticking her head out to see
who had come in, she raised a brow.
“Aren’t you supposed to be making up with Remy?”
“Why? What’ve
you heard?” Jubilee folded her arms and
leaned against Mark’s desk, accidentally sending a sheaf of papers sliding to
the floor. “He been
in here?”
“Who? Remy? Nah…” Rogue
stepped out from behind the stack, carrying an armful of books, which, from
what Jubilee could tell, dealt with amphibians and swamps. “Just figured, the way you two are, you’d be
tonsil deep in making up by now…” She
dropped the books on the nearest table with a sigh. “Doesn’t this place ever get dusted?”
“I’ll get
on it,” Jubilee grumbled, shoving herself away from
the desk and heading for the shelf where she had left the duster. “But no, I’m not making up with Remy. I’m tired of doing all the running to him and
he’s gotta learn that a few sweet words and a lot of
charm aren’t going to win every argument.”
“You sure?” Rogue asked, flipping
through the thickest of the books she had selected. “Because you know… that would even work on
me, if it were done right…”
Jubilee
swished the fuzzy duster over one of the shelves and snorted. “Well, trust me,
it’s an uphill battle not to just let him sweep me off my feet… I’m just tired of being treated like a
mushroom.”
“Kept in
the dark and fed bullshit, I know,” Rogue murmured. “Huh… weird.”
“What?”
“You don’t
think Todd’s gonna turn asexual do you?”
Jubilee
turned slowly and stared at Rogue, the duster hanging limply from her
fingertips. “The
fuck?”
“Sorry,
I’ve been trying to learn more ‘bout frogs an’ stuff, seeing as how Todd’s
getting more…um…froggy…and some of these things are both male and female and can
switch sexes…” She made a face and
looked up at Jubilee. “I’m pretty open minded but that’s too much even for me!”
“Asexual is
the wrong word,” Jubilee responded primly, her voice in Teacher Mode. “I think you want bisexual or something.”
“Nooooo…” Rogue shook her head. “I know what that is and this,” she tapped
the book, “isn’t bisexual.”
Jubilee
shrugged. “Whatever. If you go to grope him and find out he’s
missing a bit or has something *very* similar to yours, you have your
answer.” She tossed the duster onto
Mark’s desk with a sigh over Rogue’s choking laugh. “What’s the deal with everyone this week? I mean, aside from Jean being so sick…
Everyone’s just at each other’s throats.
Kurt and Kitty are snarky, Amara’s sulky,
Lance is hiding out in the basement, and then there’s me and Remy…”
“Yeah, what about you and Remy?” Rogue asked, marking her
place in the book with a piece of scrap paper.
“He came back because he loves you… You think he’d come back here just
because? He hates this state. He says it’s not civilized to live somewhere
that gets so cold and has no idea how to catch crawfish and dance to zydeco.” She leaned
back in her chair, her eyes sweeping over Jubilee’s body. Her friend’s entire posture screamed
confusion and sadness, conflict somewhere inside that she was not aware showed
in her outward attitude. “Jubes, have you *asked* him why he took off without talking
to you first? Are you just gonna let him
think you’re mad because of Belladonna being so important to him?”
“Does he
think that?” she snapped, her eyes blazing in the dim library. “I told him I’m not jealous of her! Hell, I told him at LEAST twice that I’d help
look for her! Fucking hell,” she turned
and started pacing, her scowl deepening.
“I tried telling him but he just won’t listen!”
Rogue
sighed and stood, knowing that she would not get any reading done down there
and knowing that she was too tired to even try to research in her room. She waited until Jubilee had turned back
towards her in her furious pacing before speaking. “Look, you want him to listen to you? Let him have his say first. Remy’s not gonna hear you till he blows off
some steam and gets whatever he has to say to you off his chest.”
“So you
think I should let him do the whole wine and dine and charm thing?” Jubilee
sighed and bounced on her toes, thinking.
“I do love him… I don’t want to be angry with him but…” She shook her head and seemed suddenly very
tired. She folded her arms across her stomach and seemed to wilt into herself,
closing her eyes and rocking slightly back onto her heels. “I’m just tired of wondering, you know? I’m tired of wondering if he’s going to be
here when I wake up, I’m tired of wondering if he’s gonna get himself killed
doing something for the Guild and I’m fucking sick and tired of wondering why
he still does stuff for them, especially after what they did TO him!” She shook her head with an air of finality. “Fine. I’ll talk to him in the morning. You’re right, Rogue… I can’t just let this
fester.”
Rogue
shrugged as Jubilee strode past her and out of the library. “Glad I could help…” She gathered her books up, sighing in the
silence of the large room. The sound of the house settling were eerie in the dimly lit, large
room. Rogue looked over her shoulder,
thinking she heard a soft footstep on the wooden floor. _Funny, _ she thought in self derision. _Goth girl’s afraid of things that go bump in
the night… _
She moved towards the door, stopping just short of exiting. A cold breeze seemed to blow through her,
then settle in her bones. She gasped, a sweep of dizziness making her sway on her feet, her body
seemingly numb for a moment. As soon as it started, it was over. She swallowed hard, her throat burning with a
sudden dryness. Rogue did not look
behind her as she launched herself from the room, running as if the hounds of
Hell were on her heels.
