Disclaimer: I do not own Loki, Thor, or any of the Avengers. That honor goes to Marvel. I make no money from this and own nothing but an overactive imagination. |
When I woke up the next morning, the memories from the previous night felt like a hazy dream. I could tell by the light flooding into the room that I was not in my bed. When I stretched out, rolling onto my back, I realized that the bed was much larger than my own. As my eyes adjusted enough to scan around the room and take everything in, everything came back to me in flashes; Trent showing up to Tony's party, very well ready to floor me in front of all the guests; Thor and Loki dragging him out by his neck doing God knows what to him, and then coming back only for Rhodey to come in and announce that he found him bloodied up at the bottom of the staircase.
And then being led away to a bedroom in the tower, and feeling Loki's lips press against my forehead.
That last part had to be a dream, I decided.
When I sat up, looking around the room, I noticed a sleeping figure on the sofa across from the bed. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, the sunlight causing my head to pound, not helping my hangover at all. When I moved closer and was able to make out Loki's features, I felt my heart drop into my stomach.
Maybe I hadn't been dreaming after all...
I looked around the room cautiously and took in the furniture. The way the velvet drapes and the comforter on the bed matched each other, and the intricate carvings on the four-poster bed... I realized that this must be his room, and he had slept on the sofa the entire night while I slept in his bed.
I sat up on the edge of the large bed, my dress wrinkled and up around my waist from having slept in it all night. I pulled it down to cover myself.
Despite my attempts to keep quiet so as not to wake him, Loki sat up on the sofa, his eyes still bleary with sleep. His long black hair hung down past his shoulders, framing his angular features. In this moment of dishevelment, I could see that his hair was naturally curly and that he kept it aggressively slicked back most of the time.
"Good morning," I said so quietly, I wasn't sure if he heard me or not. His piercing eyes met with mine, I felt my heart racing in my chest.
How did I never realize how handsome he was before? Well, I had, but I always pushed those thoughts away because I had had a boyfriend. And also because he was my best friend's brother.
"Did you sleep the entire night on the couch?" I asked, a pang of guilt in my chest.
He nodded, still blinking the sleep out of his eyes. "That I did... I figured you needed the rest."
I stared down at my hands. "You could have slept in the bed." I felt my cheeks heat up at the possible insinuation. "I mean... the bed is big enough so that we could both sleep without..." I cut off when he stood up to sit down beside me. "... touching..." I finished in a single breath.
"I wanted to give you the space to rest... you needed it. And besides, the sofa is more comfortable than it looks." A frown was etched deep into his face as he reached a hand out to gently stroke the right side of my face. I realized my makeup must have faded in my sleep, making the bruise fully visible. I closed my eyes and instinctively flinched away.
I immediately regretted it as a look of regret came into Loki's eyes. I knew he was just trying to comfort me, and a part of me was starved for a loving touch. I never realized how long I had gone without it.
I realized I craved his touch specifically.
"I should have finished the bastard off," he said while keeping a respectable distance. The bruise must have looked so much worse than I originally thought.
I realized that I was going to have to go back to my apartment today to get a bag of clothes and personal belongings. The idea of stepping back through that door terrified me, even though I knew that Trent would most likely be in the hospital.
The amount of peace and safety that I felt in this room was like a small oasis in the calm of the storm, such a stark contrast to the turmoil I had experienced the past 24 hours.
I don't know what caused me to do it; maybe I was just so emotionally exhausted and touch-starved, and Loki was just there, but I leaned my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes. I felt his arms wrap around me, and I couldn't remember the last time I had been held like this.
"I'm sorry..." I murmured into his shoulder.
I felt his hand in my hair. His touch was so gentle, a sharp contrast compared to the look of cold hatred I saw on his face last night when he set eyes on my boyfriend.
"What do you keep apologizing for?"
I thought that question over for a moment. "I don't know... being a burden, I guess. Taking up space and taking your bed away from you. Attracting Trent here and causing him to ruin Tony's party."
Loki sighed and said, "None of this is your fault, Y/N. None of it. You didn't take anything from me, I gave you my bed because you're my friend and you needed rest. It's not your fault that he decided to come here and cause trouble." His arms tightened around me, and I wanted to just bury my head in his chest and never leave.
I shut my eyes and felt my arms wrap around his waist, using his solid frame to ground myself into the moment.
"I wish you would stop blaming yourself. I always told Thor that man was no good, but he told me to mind my own business... I never thought that he'd actually..." He trailed off, and I could feel his eyes on my head.
I raised my head to look up into his eyes. They were much warmer than they were last night. Like a sky on a clear day that I could easily get lost in...
Loki leaned in, pressing his forehead against mine. My heart started racing again. He was so close, I could feel his breath. I thought for certain he was going to kiss me...
Was I even ready for this? I asked myself. Was this even right? He was my best friend's brother. Loki was my friend. He had always been something of a flirt with me but I always thought that was just his nature.
I felt my cheeks burn with embarrassment and turned my head away. My heart raced faster in my chest as I felt his cool breath on my cheek.
"I need to wash up..." I said while keeping my eyes on my bare feet that were planted on the floor. "Can I use your shower?"
"Of course," he said while gesturing towards the bathroom that was connected to his bedroom.
I took a long shower, surprised at how good the hot water and water pressure felt. I had intended to put my dress back on to get ready to head back to my apartment and get a bag of clothes and get out as quickly as possible in case Trent came back.
But when I left the bathroom with a towel wrapped around me, the room was empty, and some clothes were set out on the bed. When I picked them up, I realized that they must have been Natasha's. I smiled softly as I slid into the pair of jeans and long-sleeved shirt. It would be a lot warmer than the dress I had arrived in last night.
Once I was fully dressed, I made my way downstairs, following the enticing aroma of what smelled like pancakes that was leading me into the kitchen.
Thor was cooking breakfast, his blond hair pulled back into a ponytail, and an apron tied around him. I couldn't help but find the sight amusing. The god who was usually known for his brute strength looked so domesticated. Natasha was already sitting on one of the bar stools, eating her breakfast. Everyone else must have still been asleep.
"Good morning," Thor's voice thundered when I walked into the room. "I made pancakes."
I smiled and sat down beside Nat as Thor scooped me some pancakes onto a plate.
"Thanks. When did you learn to cook?"
"Jane taught me," he said while pouring some more pancake mix into the pan as it sizzled.
I poured some syrup over my pancakes and cut into them, taking a small bite. They were fluffy and he mixed fresh blueberries in. "She taught you well. These are delicious. Are you two still together?"
"No, she dumped him," Loki's voice came behind me. I nearly jumped when he walked around the counter to steal a few blueberries from the bowl in which Thor had them, popping them into his mouth as he leaned against the counter. He had styled his hair back into its usual slicked-back style. I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed, as I had liked the way his hair looked hanging down, framing his face.
Thor swatted his brother's arm playfully with the spatula. "She did not dump me. I dumped her. It was a mutual dumping."
Loki rolled his eyes as if to silently say "Sure."
"Sorry to hear that," I said as I continued eating. "She seemed really nice."
"Yeah, well the main reason was that she was too smart for him—" Loki retorted.
"Will you shut up?" Thor snapped, narrowing his eyes at the trickster.
I giggled as Nat tried to hide her smirk at the interaction.
"Thanks for the clothes," I told Nat quietly as Thor and Loki bickered quietly in the background.
"Of course," she said with a gentle smile, her eyes landing on my right eye, making me feel even more self-conscious about it now that all of my makeup had been washed away and I had nothing to hide it with. "It's cold out, and I figured that dress would be too cold. Loki said that you needed someone to take you to your apartment to get some things."
"Yeah. A duffel bag of clothes, and a few personal belongings."
"I can drive her," Loki interjected. This caused Thor to shoot him a smirk.
"What, it wasn't enough that she slept in your room last night?" he said, almost goading.
"Well, it was better than sleeping on the couch, wasn't it?" Loki's eyes narrowed dangerously at his brother.
Thor laughed and scooped some more pancakes onto a plate, setting them to the side. "We have guest rooms, brother. You just wanted her to be near you—"
I felt my cheeks burn hotter than ever when he said that. Loki picked up a spare spatula and smacked Thor upside the head with it, causing the two to get into a playful brawl.
Natasha rolled her eyes. "Idiots," she muttered under her breath.
Bruce stepped out of the hallway from his room, yawning widely. His grey-streaked hair was messy, making it clear that he had just woken up.
"Oh, hey, Y/N. When did you get here?"
"She got here last night," Nat said while finishing off her pancakes and placing her plate in the sink. "You missed a fight. Her boyfriend showed up and... well, I'm pretty sure Thor and Loki put him in the hospital."
"That's probably a good thing, then," Bruce said as he sat down on the other side of Nat. Thor handed him a plate of pancakes, and he smiled gratefully. "The other guy might have come out and done far worse... I never did like him, anyway. I always thought he was an ass."
"Well, it was much worse than you suspected... he's been hitting her," Thor said.
A dark look came across Bruce's face for the briefest moment, but he quickly masked it. "Not surprising. I'm glad they took care of him. You don't... plan on going back to him, do you?"
I shook my head, the idea of returning to Trent making my skin crawl. "No. But I have to go back to our apartment to get some things." I finished my pancakes and Thor spooned me a fresh batch onto my plate without asking me. "I don't need-"
"Yes, you do. Now eat." He squirted some whipped cream on top of them.
I realized that I was much hungrier than I had originally thought. Being under the stress of watching my every move with Trent made me eat less.
"Natasha said she had a mission to go on with Barton," Thor said while turning the stove off and taking off his apron. He had several plates of pancakes piled high like a buffet for when the rest of the Avengers came down for breakfast. "And the Cap needed me to help him out with something. Loki doesn't have anything to do today, so he can take her, can't you, brother?"
Loki was glancing cautiously at Bruce as he was eating his pancakes, as if afraid that the lanky doctor would explode into a giant green monster at the drop of a hat and turn him into a ragdoll like he had a couple of years prior. He shook his head quickly, bringing himself back into the present moment. "Yes, of course. I can drive her."
Natasha narrowed her gaze at him, clearly unimpressed. "Are we sure that's a good idea?" she challenged, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, projecting a fierce aura that made even Loki feel a hint of unease.
A sly smirk crept across Loki's face, a familiar glint of mischief in his eyes. "What, you still don't trust me, Agent Romanoff?" he quipped, the sarcasm dripping from his voice.
"No," Nat replied bluntly, her expression unwavering.
Thor, now seated beside Loki, interjected with an air of confidence, dismissively waving his hand as if to brush off the doubt. "Loki will be fine. Y/N has been a dear friend of ours for years, and I know he wouldn't let anything bad happen to her. Right, brother?"
Loki's face tightened with a mix of annoyance and frustration at Thor's comment. "The fact that you even felt the need to ask that is frankly insulting. You know I care far too much about her to let anything happen to her."
"Yes, I am well aware of that," Thor replied, his grin widening.
Realization hit Loki, and he shot an exasperated glance at his brother. "That's not what I—"
"Yeah, sure it's not," Thor teased, a playful glimmer in his eyes. "Well, you should get going before everyone else wakes up and chaos ensues."
Loki rolled his eyes, masking his growing impatience as I polished off my second serving of pancakes. He stepped toward the door, holding it open for me with an eagerness that was hard to ignore.
Part of me wondered if he was just eager to get away from Bruce, who appeared blissfully unaware, quietly eating his pancakes as he occasionally complimented Thor on the delicious flavor of the breakfast.
I followed Loki out into the garage, past the many rows of cars. Tony owned so many cars, that I didn't know how many of them actually belonged to the Avengers individually.
When we reached the car that he and Thor usually drove, I slid into the passenger seat, the smell of leather filling my senses as Loki got into the driver's seat and started the car.
The drive was quiet save for me giving him directions to my apartment. I kept thinking about what Thor had said during breakfast. He mentioned that there were guest rooms in the Tower and that Loki didn't have to give me his bed. This got me curious as to why he did it. It seemed clear that he didn't have any nefarious intentions, especially since he chose to sleep on his couch all night. Thor made it sound like Loki was being protective of me, or even more oddly... that he had feelings for me.
When he pulled up to my apartment, I took a deep breath, preparing myself to enter there for the last time. This place had been both my home and my prison for the past two years, and I was getting ready to leave here for good.
"Do you want me to come in with you?" Loki asked me.
I took a deep breath. "No, I'll be fine, thanks. I'm just getting a few changes of clothes."
"Alright then. I'll be out here waiting for you."
I got out of the car and went up the stairs to my apartment, using the spare key under the welcome mat to unlock the door.
I closed the door behind me once I entered, taking a look around the apartment one more time before heading towards my bedroom. I threw some clothes into a duffel bag and took my box of personal belongings that I kept hidden in the closet out.
"Y/N?"
The sound of that familiar voice caused my blood to turn to ice as I froze where I was, paralyzed with fear.
Trent was standing in the doorway, his face nearly unrecognizable because of the bruises and scrapes that covered him. His eyes no longer had that threatening, angry look in them. He looked broken and tired as if he had gone the entire night without sleep. He must have gotten out of the hospital early.
I stared at him silently, afraid to move. His gaze moved to the luggage bag sitting on the bed. "Oh, I get it. You're leaving me now, huh?"
I forced myself to move through the fear like I was wading through water as fast as I could before the electrical current could kill me before I made it out alive.
"After everything we've been through? You're just going to take off just like that? After one mistake?"
I stopped packing for a moment to look up at him, but the look that was in my eyes was not one of fear but of anger and hurt. "You shoving me into the doorway was not a mistake. Because it happened more than once, repeatedly, and on purpose. You knocking me to the ground, repeatedly, and locking me inside the closet for hours was not a mistake, Trent." I took a deep breath, straightening my shoulders back. "I should have done this years ago. Yes, I am leaving you."
A flicker of panic came into his eyes before he quickly masked it. "Well, you don't have anywhere else to go," he said while crossing his arms over his chest in a smug manner. "You will have no one. You are nothing without me."
I finished packing my clothes and zipped up my duffel bag. "You're wrong. I'm staying with some friends."
Trent narrowed his eyes, and I could see a dangerous look form in his eyes as the wheels in his head began to turn. He moved across the room in the flash of an eye and was suddenly in my face.
"You little slut... you've been screwing Odinson this entire time, haven't you!?"
It was such a reach of a conclusion to come to, I couldn't help but express how ridiculous it was. "What?"
"Don't play stupid with me. That's why you've been running off to hang with him instead of me."
"No, I'm not sleeping with Thor. And even if I was, it's none of your business. We're done."
Trent grabbed my duffel, throwing it across the room, out of my reach. I tried to control the fear that gripped my heart at that moment. He could always sense my fear and seemed to relish it.
"Stop it," I said through gritted teeth.
"You're a fucking liar, you know that? Always have been. And a bad one at that." He blocked my path as I tried to walk past him to retrieve the duffel bag. "So if not him, who? Is it his little brother? The freak who does the mind games?" The mention of Loki made me feel a surge of defensiveness. He must have noticed the look on my face because he wielded that against me next. "I knew it. I fucking knew it, you whore. I've seen the way you look at him, and—"
"JUST SHUT UP!" I yelled in his face, shoving past him to get to my duffel.
When I bent over to pick up my bag, I was immediately jerked back by my hair, a sharp stab of pain surging through my scalp. I cried out in pain as my hand shot up to grab at the hand holding my hair.
"L-let go of me!" I shrieked, trying but failing to sound firm and commanding.
I was shoved face-first down onto the bed as Trent used his full weight to pin me down there. "No. You want to be a whore? Then I'll treat you like one." His hand trailed down to the waistband of my jeans as his leg nudged my knees apart. "And your friends aren't here to keep me from you this time."
In a moment of sheer horror, I let out a bloodcurdling scream, but it was quickly muffled by the mattress and bedding.
The air around us suddenly changed, and a shadow from an unknown source darkened the room. This surprised Trent enough to look up from me. Loki emerged from the shadows silently, his eyes cold and murderous.
A look of blank terror came over Trent's face as he watched the god of Chaos emerge from the shadows, and memories of last night seemed to be coming over him.
Loki tilted his head slightly as he looked at Trent's trembling form. "You just never learn, do you?"
Trent bolted for the door, but the shadows grew into tendrils, wrapping around his arms and legs as they dragged him to the ground. He let out a horrified scream as he curled in on himself. Whatever magic Loki was using must have been getting inside of his head again.
I crawled off of the bed and towards my bag on the floor, but I was too horrified to try and leave. I hugged the bag of clothes to me like it might anchor me into something.
Trent was dragged to his feet, and Loki scowled furiously in his bruised face. "Get up!" He brought his knee up, connecting hard with Trent's groin, causing him to double over in pain.
Trent kept trying to fold in on himself, to hold his head in his hands like a child rocking back and forth in the corner trying to convince himself that the monster under his bed was not real, but Loki kept forcing him to look him in the eyes.
"Look at me," he hissed in his face furiously, sounding serpent-like as he scowled, baring his teeth at him. "You. Are. Pathetic. You are the worst kind of coward. You beat a woman who you are supposed to love and protect, and run like a mouse when someone your size shows up." A glint of silver flashed as Loki was suddenly holding a knife to Trent's throat, his eyes glinting with rage and malice as if he thirsted to see his blood spill.
"I'm sorry..." Trent whimpered pathetically. "I'm sorry, Y/N... please... forgive me..."
Loki stared down at Trent with a look of pure hatred in his eyes. He glanced over at me as I was cowering over my bag, and it wasn't until I felt the hot wetness on my face that I realized I was crying. His gaze softened momentarily before turning back to Trent and shrouding them both in thick shadows so that I didn't see what happened next.
The sound of Trent's bloodcurdling screams rang in my ears, and I could hear him calling - no, begging for me. I heard sickening cracking noises, as if his bones were breaking in several places at once. The last sound I registered was what sounded like him choking before I finally decided I had enough and covered my ears, trying to take myself away from this place.
"Stop, stop, stop, STOP!!!!" I screamed.
The mist cleared as Loki looked down at me, the murderous expression in his gaze gone now as he stared down at me with a mixture of concern and guilt. I could hear Trent sobbing on the floor to the point he could have been hyperventilating. I was afraid to look at him or the mess he was in and kept my head buried in my duffel.
I felt gentle hands take mine. When I looked up, Loki was kneeling beside me. He scooped me into his arms, and I held onto him tightly, my hot tears soaking his shirt as I buried my face into his chest.
"It's alright," he said softly, his voice smooth and soothing like velvet, a striking contrast to the fierce hissing he had directed at Trent moments earlier. "He won't hurt you anymore. I promise you that."
"Please don't kill him..."
Loki scoffed softly. "And why shouldn't I? He was clearly ready to rape you. He would deserve nothing less."
My fingers clutched at his shirt, begging him to see reason. "Please... I don't want his death on your hands... you're better than this, Loki... I know you are..."
He brought his hand gently under my chin to raise my eyes to meet his. "Is that what you're worried about? That I'll turn back into a monster?" He pressed his forehead against mine, and I closed my eyes against the cool sensation of his skin against mine. "Very well... I'll let him live. But at this point, I think death would be mercy."
I finally had the nerve to look at Trent. The sight before me triggered my gag reflex. He was lying on his stomach, naked from the waist down as blood soaked the carpet of the bedroom underneath him. His legs were bent at unnatural angles, as were his arms, as if they had been pulled out of their sockets. He was unconscious now, but blood was pouring out of his mouth. I blinked as I stared down at him.
"What did you do to him...?"
Loki picked up my bag and the box that was sitting next to the closet. "I'll leave him alive... but his life is going to be a living hell from now on. He won't be attempting to rape anyone else... ever again."
I stared down at his broken form and it finally dawned on me where the blood was coming from, and why blood was pouring out of his mouth. Why he was choking.
I felt like I was going to be sick.
Loki was staring down at Trent with his hands in his pockets as if he were a woodcarver casually admiring his handiwork. His clothes were spotless, and it made me wonder if he had used his shadow magic to do this rather than his bare hands.
"Can we just... get out of here..." I asked, my head feeling faint. I wanted to sit down and collect myself but not in this room. Not in this apartment. I wanted to distance myself from this part of my life permanently.
Loki's gaze softened once again when he looked at me. "Of course." He looped his arm through mine, leading me outside through the apartment, still carrying my things as he led me back to the car. The cold air outside helped my nausea slightly as he opened the door for me, and I slid into the passenger seat.
He placed my duffel bag and box of belongings in the backseat. He took a moment to pull out his phone, and I heard him speaking to who I assumed to be his brother, telling him he should probably send another ambulance to my apartment. He assured him that I was fine and that we were on our way back to Avengers Tower.
He slid into the driver's side, and I was staring blankly out the window, still trying to process everything that had happened.
"I'm sorry," he said softly, his voice breaking through my thoughts. I looked up at him. I had been so lost in my thoughts, I hadn't realized that he had started driving.
"What are you sorry for? You... you saved me..."
"I'm not sorry for what I did to him. I'm sorry you had to see it. That you had to see me as... a monster."
I stared at him as he kept his eyes on the road. "I'd never see you as a monster, Loki..." I said quietly.
His eyes left the road to meet mine, and I could feel my heart skipping a few beats in my chest. Was this man seriously giving me butterflies right now? After he just broke my ex's limbs and force-fed him his genitals?
"Truthfully?" he asked, a hint of vulnerability in his eyes.
I nodded, my heart beating in my chest rapidly. "Truthfully. You did that to protect me... and I always believed you had good in you. Even when you didn't always show it."
Loki's eyes went back to the road, and he could tell I was referring to when he attempted to take the entirety of New York hostage. He had come a long way since then, now helping the very team that he once fought against.
When he pulled into the garage of the Tower, I didn't want to talk to anyone else. I just wanted to crawl into bed and forget what I saw back at the apartment. I didn't even know if Trent would survive the attack, and quite frankly, I didn't care. I felt a giant weight being lifted off my shoulders, knowing that he'd never be able to hurt me again regardless if he survived or not. And I didn't feel guilty this time for my apathy towards his suffering. What love I had left for him had died when he tried to rape me.
When we were finally alone in the quiet of the garage, we both just sat there quietly as if to savor the peacefulness of the moment. Just being here in this garage with him made me feel like I was being thawed out from the desolate place that I once called my home.
After a few moments of silence, Loki gently took his hand in mine. His skin was naturally cool due to his Jotun blood, but the gesture was still warmer than anything I had felt in years.
I turned to face him. He was staring down at my hand as he held it. When he raised his blue eyes to meet mine, I don't know what brought me to do it, but I leaned towards him slowly, bringing my lips to his.
He seemed shocked at first but didn't resist. His other hand came up to cup my face as he deepened the kiss. I sighed, opening my mouth as I inhaled him, wanting to breathe him in and everything about him. When I felt his tongue slither into my mouth, I couldn't hold back my moan as I wound my hands through his hair, freeing his black locks from the confines of whatever gel he used to slick them into place.
I gasped against his lips when I had to pull away for air. Loki was breathing heavily, his breath cool against my face as he kissed along my jawline to my neck. I felt a jolt of pleasure shoot straight between my thighs, and I couldn't stop myself from moaning softly.
There was a sudden tapping noise on the car window, causing us both to jump, startled by the interruption. We had been so lost in each other, we had been oblivious to whoever was approaching the car.
Loki rolled down the window for us to be faced by Steve and Thor. Thor's laughter boomed through the garage as he shouted "I KNEW IT!"
Loki's usually pale cheeks were pink with embarrassment. "What on earth do you want, you insufferable oaf?"
Thor was still nudging the Captain, repeating "Told ya!" before Steve finally rolled his eyes, pulled some money out of his wallet, and handed it to Thor.
"Sorry to interrupt, but Fury called in and said he needs us to head out and help Nat and Barton," Steve said while looking annoyed by the god of Thunder's antics. "They went out an hour ago to intercept some Hydra agents, and they're outnumbered. Stark and Rhodes have already been sent out."
Loki sighed and ran a hand through his dark locks, attempting to put it back in its original state it had been in before I had messed it up. "Fine. I'll be there." He turned to face me and my disheveled appearance. "You'll be fine here alone, won't you, darling?"
I nodded. "Yeah. Banner's still here, right?"
Loki's eyes narrowed. "Yes, what a comforting thought," he quipped sarcastically. "Just wait for me in the Tower, okay?"
I nodded. "Just... be careful... please."
His usual sly smirk spread across his face as he gently took my hand. "I'm almost offended that you seem to not have faith in my abilities."
"I just don't want anything to happen to you."
Loki brought his lips to my hand and I felt my stomach turn somersaults as my cheeks burned once again. "I'll be back by tonight. Along with everyone else."
I smiled softly as he got out of the car, heading into the building with Thor as his brother continued to mercilessly tease him about finally finding someone to be with and stating that he always knew that he had feelings for me. Loki called him an oaf and told him to shut up as their voices faded into the distance.
I got out and retrieved my belongings from the backseat. Steve offered to help carry the cardboard box in and I smiled gratefully as he lifted it easily with one arm.
After taking my belongings to Loki's room, no one asked about what happened at my apartment, nor did anyone reprimand Loki for what he did to Trent. Before they left for their mission, I asked Thor if he had sent the ambulance. He confirmed that Trent had indeed survived but would be in the ICU for several months, but he would never fully recover mentally and would most likely spend the rest of his days in a psychiatric ward. Thor didn't seem sorry for him at all, and all I could feel was relief that I was finally free from the hell of that relationship.
After the three of them left, I made my way back up to Loki's room, feeling exhausted both emotionally and physically from the events of the morning. I changed into a nightgown I had brought in my duffel bag and slid under the warmth of his blankets, allowing sleep to take over. I felt safe in this room, safe now that the man could no longer hurt me. Despite the horror I had witnessed in my apartment, the last thought I had before drifting into a peaceful slumber was of Loki's lips against mine.
