Hours later, the snow had stopped falling and the dim daylight gave away to the darkness of night. Zac ran a hand over his face, “How long have we been lookin’ at these videos now?”
“I don’t know,” Kiara admitted with a chuckle as she tossed some popcorn into her mouth. She was perched on Zac’s leg, her jean glad legs on either side of his left leg. She’d rolled up the sleeves of her knitted pink sweater, her sky blue eyes sparkled as Zac’s arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her in close to himself. He was wearing a Carolina Hurricane’s hoodie and over-sized blue jeans, secured by a belt which bared a Carolina Hurricanes buckle.
“You never told me where you were from… or anything about your past really,” Kiara stated in a curious tone.
Zac looked at Kiara from the corner of his eye before replying, “My past isn’t important.”
“Oh?” Kiara asked.
Zac stopped scrolling and looked at Kiara as he asked, “Do you think it is?”
“Past experiences make you what you are for good or bad. It’d be nice to know where you come from. I know you love watching hockey games when the Hurricanes play,” Kiara answered.
“They’re my favourite team,” Zac responded.
“Some of the best memories I’ve got -- were going to their games when I was a kid. I went to them with my friend and her Dad-“
He hesitated for a moment, “back in Raleigh.”
Kiara blinked and twisted to look directly at Zac’s face.
He smirked a bit, “that’s where I was born. Raleigh, North Carolina.”
Zac and blinked at a video name on youtube, ‘ ‘Hero- An AMV for EJ’?’ He thought to himself as he clicked on it.
“I wonder what EJ would stand for,” Kiara wondered out loud as she rested against Zac’s. He rested his chin on her shoulder as the video began loading.
“Could be any combination starting with those letters,” Zac answered, out of the corner of his eye, he watched Kiara’s eyes darting as she read the description.
“Emily Janine,” Kiara said.
A chill shot through Zac’s spine, causing him to shiver at the name. Kiara twisted her body again to look at him, “are you alright?”
“Yeah… I just hate that name,” Zac whispered.
“What name?” Kiara asked.
Zac moistened his lips before replying, “I won’t say it. Where’d you get that from anyway?”
“It’s in the description,” Kiara replied.
Zac’s eyes looked as if they were about to pop out of their sockets. He paused the video from playing, then scrolled. He began furiously reading through the description, and sure enough there it was:
‘This video is a collection of photos through the years with my friend, Emily Janine Thompson. I commonly referred to my friend as ‘EJ’ and will do so from this point on. The whole reason being, EJ is transgender… female to male. I’ve known since we were little, but his parents are very religious. Two years ago, EJ disappeared after a fight with his folks. I’m not looking to bring EJ home, I just want him to know that someone still thinks of him, and hopes that he’s safe.’
The comments contained varying degrees of transphobic comments and angry replies in response to the transphobia. His face tinged red with anger before he scrolled back up to the video and hit the play button. The first few notes of the song began to play followed by Mariah Carey’s voice, “There’s a hero, if you look inside your heart. You don’t have to be afraid of what you are…”
Kiara blinked as she watched the pictures flashing on the screen, ‘That red haired girl kinda looks like…’
“Jessie,” Zac whispered, his eyes focused on the brunette in the pictures.
“Whose Jessie?” Kiara asked, a slight edge to her voice.
“An old friend, she’s the one that used to take me to hockey games. She’s the only one besides my parents that would have these photos,” Zac replied.
“So this is you?” Kiara asked and then realization dawned on her.
“Oh…”
“Yeah…. Emily Janine is my birth name. It is a great name… if you’re a girl to the core,” Zac agreed.
Kiara bit her lip.
Zac eyed her before shifting his hand and tickling her ribs, causing Kiara to smack his hand, “Stop it!” she demanded between giggles.
“Well you looked like a storm cloud. Just chill about it, ya didn’t know,” Zac replied.
“Hey Zac…”
“Yeah?”
“You said once that there was a girl you maybe liked who wasn’t fourteen at the time… is she fourteen now?” Kiara asked. She didn’t know why she was bringing it up suddenly, other than to change the topic. It was the only rational explanation she could muster.
“Yeah,” Zac replied.
“You still like her?” Kiara asked.
“Maybe,” Zac answered.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kiara asked.
Zac sighed, “I just… I’m scared, ya know? Besides ... I haven’t quite decided what I want to do with the downstairs issue anyway.”
Kiara’s brows furrowed, “What’s that got to do with anything?”
“Well… eventually she’s gonna get curious about that stuff… and it scares me… cause I’m not like other guys. No matter how ya slice it…. literally,” Zac admitted.
“No… but I’d bet you’re better than some guys at other stuff,” Kiara hinted.
Zac shook his head ‘no’ as he blurted out, “Manually stimulating a girl is a pain in the ass. I can’t even do it for myself.”
His cheeks flushed as red as his hair when he realized what he’d just admitted, “F-forget I ever said that. Please..”
Kiara giggled a bit.
Zac gave her an alarmed look, “What?”
Kiara kept giggling, bringing a hand up to her mouth to try and stifle the giggles but failed miserably. Zac watched her for a while before moving her hand away from her mouth and kissing her.
Kiara blinked at the action but after a moment relaxed into it and began to respond, moving her lips against Zac’s. Soon as she did however, Zac pulled away and gently pushed her off his lap and onto her feet.
“What was that about?” Kiara asked.
“Stopping you from giggling at my embarrassing blunder,” Zac replied as he headed into the washroom. Kiara watched him go into the washroom before she blinked, gently touching her finger tips to her lips.
‘He kissed me… and I didn’t flip out,’ She thought. The blonde teen sat back down on the chair, replaying the video on mute.
‘This was Zac as a kid, huh? Dang…’ she thought to herself.
“Curiosity killed the cat, ya know,” Zac’s voice called out to her.
Kiara gained a smug smirk, “Well good thing I’m not a cat.”
Zac snickered a bit as he walked back over to Kiara’s side, “Not quite the point I was getting at.”
Kiara lifted herself off the chair and Zac sat back down. Once he was situated on the computer chair, she sat back on his leg.
Zac rested his chin on Kiara’s shoulder and closed his eyes as a heavy sigh escaped him.
“What’s eating you?”
Zac found himself asking the question before he’d even thought it through, “Why do you wanna know my past so badly?”
Kiara didn’t even process the question before answering, “I think the better question would be: Why wouldn’t I? Sure your past doesn’t define you. Your choices that you make, the choices that change the path of your life, that’s what defines you… but the obsticles you have to overcome? That’s what strengthens you. I guess I wanna know so I’ll know when to step up and back you. I mean we’re friends, right?”
‘”Friends”…. Sure we’ll go with that,’ Zac thought to himself.
“Right,” He replied as he wrapped his arms around Kiara.
He hesitated before offering, “Make you a deal: I’ll tell you about my past... if you’ll tell me what those nightmares are about. It doesn’t have to be right now… and understand that… this isn’t easy for me either. So… best I can really do is tell you in pieces… I mean… the things that wouldn’t normally come up in regular conversation. As for you telling me about the nightmares… you don’t have to tell me right away. Just soon as you’re able to, let me know. I want to help you kick them, whatever they’re about. Alright?”
Kiara fell silent, and kept herself from looking at Zac, her eyes were downcast, looking at her hands that had balled into fists on her lap. The fists clung to the material of her blue jeans so tightly her knuckles shone white.
“Ca-can I ask you something?”
“Just did, but ask me something else,” Zac answered, a hand coming up to rub Kiara’s back. His brow furrowed at the tension and rigidity of her muscles, ‘what’s wrong?’
“N-ne-never mind,” Kiara replied after a while, tears beginning to flow freely from her eyes.
Zac’s brow furrowed for what felt like the millionth time that day, and blinked in alarm when he felt dampness falling onto his hand and jeans.
He wrapped his arms around Kiara and hugged her close to himself. He wasn’t sure he could hold her any tighter without crushing her, or merging into a single entity, “don’t push yourself. Whenever you’re ready, I’ll be here.”
Kiara’s voice was strained as she asked through her sobs, “What if what’s causing them scares you off? Or disgusts you?”
“Hey, what did I tell you before? I’m a transgender mutant and a recovering drug addict. I’m the last person to have any right to judge another and I know it… the things I’ve done… if you knew everything about my past you just might be the one getting’ disgusted with me,” Zac replied as he nuzzled into her neck.
“I’m not going anywhere, if you don’t believe anything else… just believe that. Count on me, call on me when you need someone… even if I’m in Taiwan, I don’t care. I’ll find the quickest way to you, every time,” Zac added.
‘I love you,’ He thought to himself as he cuddled her.
Kiara bit her lip harshly, as she turned her head slightly into Zac’s. Her back pressed up against his chest.
‘I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I can’t tell you. I’m too scared,’ Kiara thought to herself.
‘I’m such a pathetic sack of sap. God… this is so lame,’ her thoughts continued. She felt some pain in her lower lip but didn’t pay any mind to it, keeping her focus on not making any noise.
She looked over when she felt something brushing against her cheek. It was Zac’s hand, covered by his shirt sleeve.
“You drew blood,” Zac stated as he shifted them so he could look at Kiara.
“Sorry. I’m so pathetic right now,” Kiara babbled out.
“Shhh, you’re not. You’re upset, that’s all there is to it,” Zac replied as he placed his finger on her bottom lip, focusing. After a few seconds the small wound healed.
“How… how did you-“ Kiara stumbled over her words and ran her own fingers along where she’d bitten through the skin.
Zac smiled a bit, “My power isn’t just good for zapping someone or giving them static hair… I can also use it to heal minor injuries… on myself and others… nowhere near the rate of Logan’s healing factor… but enough that I only get scars from big injuries.”
“So… what your power is the ability to….?” Kiara trailed off.
“Control electrical currents. There’s a constant supply of electricity in the cells of every living being… all I have to do is manipulate the electrical current in a manner that speeds up their healing process. It’s easier to do it to myself than someone else though,” Zac admitted.
“That’s pretty cool,” Kiara replied with a small smile.
‘Girl… you never cease to amaze me,’ Zac thought as he brightened at Kiara’s new smile.
