Twenty-Two year old Elizabeth slung her back pack over her shoulder as she made her way through the Barracks, ‘this sucks!! I have to come back to this stinking facility every year knowing Jason’s a popsicle somewhere and let these doctors who are likely experimenting on him run tests on me to see if my Leukemia’s coming back. Give me a break. I got a blood transfusion from Uncle Jimmy… with the way he heals up, there is no way that cancer’s coming back anytime soon.’She entered the examination room and tossed the backpack into an empty chair as she began to change into a hospital gown, pulling her wavy fire red locks up into a bun at the top of her head while her thoughts continued, ‘well… no matter what, it can’t be any worse than the news I got when I was 17…’
A teenager stared in disbelief at the doctor, “Wh-what do you mean… ‘non specific ovarian failure’?”
“It means that your ovaries are not functioning. You do not ovulate anymore, Elizabeth. Effecitvely, you’re menopausal before age 40. It’s most likely a result of the chemotherapy you had as a child,” the doctor replied.
Rick Stoner gently grasped Elizabeth’s trembling hand, “But… she received… an unusual blood donation. Would that counter it?”
“It’s too early to really tell. It may reverse it with enough time, however the amount that Elizabeth received in comparison to the amount naturally occurring within the donor host is quite substantial. It’s a hit and miss. It’ll either reverse it, or this condition will be permenant. We’ll keep testing each year to see,” the middle-aged woman replied.
Elizabeth sat stone faced, taking in shaky breaths, ‘I can’t have kids? I can’t have kids! Whose gonna want me now?’
Months later Elizabeth stood at a grave site, staring blankly at the name on the headstone, ‘Col. Richard Stoner.’
She heard the footsteps, and smelled the familiar aftershave. She waited until the 5’3” tall man’s hand reached for her shoulder, “Li-“
Liz spun on her heel and threw a punch at him, he took the hit square to his jaw. James stumbled slightly but easily regained his balance. Elizabeth was red faced as she delivered punch after punch to his torso. He stood and let her.
“You bastard! Why weren’t you there?! It should’ve been you! It should’ve been! You could’ve taken that bullet and lived! Damn you James Howlett! Damn you to hell,” Elizabeth screamed as her frenzied fists flew.
James blinked once, then gently caught Elizabeth’s wrists in his hands. His grip restrained her enough that she couldn’t keep hitting him, but not enough to harm her. Elizabeth struggled and fought against the restraint, letting out an angry, near feral scream at the cessation of her hammering.
“I don’t blame you for being angry, Lizzie. You’re dealing with a lot right now. More than any kid your age should have to deal with. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to save your Dad. Everything considered, you’re right, I should’ve been there… but I was on a mission. Somethin’ your old man sent me on, I wasn’t gonna refuse. If I’d known he was in danger, I woulda stayed behind.”
“I’ve got nobody now. I’m all alone…” Elizabeth whispered through her grief stricken tears.
James let go of her wrists and pulled her into a hug, “No you ain’t, darlin’. You ain’t ever been alone. Ya never will be. Long as I’m here.”
Fresh tears started down Elizabeth’s face as she hesitantly returned his hug, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry Uncle Jimmy.”
“Ya got nothin’ to be sorry for. I’ve survived a firing squad… a grief stricken kid throwin’ punches ain’t gonna do nothin’,” James replied, holding her tightly as her sobs overwhelmed her.
"I'm here for ya, Lizzie Rose. Just like I've always been... only difference is, it ain't gonna be from the sidelines now," James added, gently playing with Elizabeth's hair.
Elizabeth sighed heavily as she sat on top of the gurney and waited, ‘but with Uncle Jimmy’s rapid healing… who knows? Maybe one day I can have a baby. I gotta focus on my career so I can help Jason … and so I can afford to adopt as well… but maybe someday lightning will strike twice for me, and I’ll luck out. I know my relationship with Nate’s over. I hope I can still be his friend though…’
She looked up when the curtain was pulled back but when she saw who was standing before her, Elizabeth’s eyes widened to the size of saucers as she back flipped off of the gurney. She landed on her feet, and shouted to the intruder, “what are you doing in here? Get out!”
The person made no sound as they shot a dart into Elizabeth’s shoulder, causing her to gasp out in surprise. Her head began to swim while her vision darkened slightly. She gritted her teeth as she gripped the dart and pulled it out, looking at it, ‘sedative?’
She felt the dart slip out of her hands, her instinct was to run but her body wasn’t obeying.
“Jason…Jimmy…help…” she whimpered.
'Did I say that? It didn't sound like me,' She thought before her vision went black.
Elizabeth blinked as she landed on cool grass, the birds sang in the valley while the sun bathed her in warmth and light.
“Elizabeth,” A voice called to her.
Elizabeth’s blue eyes widened while the air escaped her lungs in a gasp.
She spun around to see him, Jason standing in the field with her.
She smiled and ran at him, throwing her arms around his neck as she happily exclaimed, “Jay-Jay! It’s been forever!”
Jason blinked but gently wrapped his arms around Elizabeth, while slowly nodding in agreement, “It has been. You’re looking well. Are you feeling better?”
Elizabeth nodded, enthusiastically, “Yes. Much better. The Leukemia’s gone.”
Jason smiled, “That’s great news. I told you that you’d beat it, didn’t I?”
Elizabeth nodded, “But… it wasn’t just the chemo. I had a bone marrow donation from my Dad but… I developed Graph Vs. Host disease. If it wasn’t for Uncle Jimmy… I wouldn’t be here.”
Jason’s smile fell before he relaxed a little, “I see… you’re lucky to have someone like him in your life.”
“And you. What are we doing here anyway?” Elizabeth replied as she looked around.
“You have to wake up, Liz. I only have a short period of time before this illusion will go away and I can’t talk to you anymore,” Jason replied, a stern expression taking over his face.
Elizabeth’s happiness faded, “What?”
“Run, Elizabeth. Wake up and run. Run until you can’t see this facility and keep running. Don’t ever come back. Don’t come looking for me. Get out. Get out now,” Jason responded, fear beginning to claim his tone as the volumn of his voice escalated.
“Jason?”
“He’s going to experiment on us both, Elizabeth. Wake up Elizabeth Stoner. Wake up and run,” Jason repeated.
“I-I don’t….your Dad?” Elizabeth asked in her confusion.
She looked around, “how do I get out? What do I have to do?”
“Try laying down, like you’re going to sleep… close your eyes. It’s a paradox…if you’re asleep here, you’ll be awake there,” Jason responded.
Elizabeth bit her lip, “lay with me?”
Jason blinked but gained a defeated look on his face as he walked over to Liz, and laid down in the grass. Elizabeth laid down next to him.
“I miss you, Jason.”
“I know,” Jason replied. He inwardly winced when Elizabeth cuddled up to him.
“Forget about me, Liz. Just save yourself,” Jason pleaded.
“I could never forget you,” Elizabeth whispered as she leaned on one of her forearms.
“Jason?”
He avoided her gaze for a few minutes before looking to her, “You’re gonna miss your chance.”
Elizabeth lowered her face towards Jason’s and gently brushed her lips against his.
Jason blinked in shock for a moment before watching as Elizabeth laid her head down on his chest, and closed her eyes.
Elizabeth blinked her eyes open and tried to sit up, only to find that her arms were bound to a bed, and her legs were secured. She blushed at the positioning of her legs and struggled violently against the restraints.
"I wouldn't do that. You're likely to break your bones, Elizabeth," a familiar voice warned.
Elizabeth froze in mid struggle, 'no... no way...he's here?'
She glanced around seeing a red haired teenage girl, and Jason strapped to other beds. Jason was still partially frozen, while the girl had some sort of device secured on her head.
"Interesting device, isn't it? I call it the neuroinhibitor. It keeps her out of my mind, and from using her most dangerous ability," William spoke.
"Suck a dick, Stryker," Liz spat out in a low growl.
William chuckled, "Oh yes and there's Logan's personality shining through quite well... oh I'm sorry, you call him 'Uncle Jimmy', don't you?"
Liz glared William down, "What do you want with me? I'm not a mutant, you know it."
"Ah, yes... but your DNA has merged with a mutant's and that makes you quite interiguing," William replied.
Elizabeth didin't falter, but continued her glare, "You've got about three minutes to let me out."
This comment seemed to amuse William, and prompted the question, "Oh? Is that so? I wonder why."
"You really think I'd come back to this hell hole alone? Get yourself checked, Stryker. I know what you are and what you do. If you think I'd come here without some powerful people knowing where I'd be, why, and when I expected to be done, you're gravely mistaking," Elizabeth warned.
William smiled, "Your father would be so proud. His little girl putting on such a brave act."
The next inquiry was made with a feral snarl, shortly after an unmistakable sound of bone piercing through flesh could be heard, "Whose actin'?"
