She heard the steady beep of the machines as she slowly drifted back into consciousness. There was a hum of machines and a smell that was so clean it was almost sickening but there were other smells mixed in. One that she found pleasant and enjoyable and was made up of something similar to the tanned hide that were used to make the armor she wore and something else that was unfamiliar. She slowly opened her violet eyes and found herself gazing up at the white ceiling of a room. Where was she? She remember being on the Shi'ar ship and they had found themselves suddenly being attacked and she was whisked away down the cold corridors. The guard! She jerked and sat straight up and found herself staring at a strange, hairy man.
Her first instinct was to attack but without having any knowledge of her current surroundings she flip herself off the side of the bed she had been laying on, crouching low and putting it between her and the short stranger. She placed one hand on the cool floor keeping her eyes locked onto his and prepared to defend herself if necessary. She tried to take assessment of her surroundings as she kept her eyes on him, watching and waiting for him to move. She could see that she was in a small room with a single bed and some strange machines. There was just one door which stood open and the man was standing too close for her to access it easily.
"Easy there," he said to her. His voice was gruff but also calm and almost soothing and he held up both of his hands to show that he didn't mean her any danger. He had to admit to himself that he was impressed with her swiftness and the way she held her body in position that would give her a distinct advantage in an attack. He couldn't help but take note that her trim, athletic body was bare of any clothing and was making his blood a little hot.
They continued to stare at each other for a few more moments until finally she began to relax under his gaze and slowly started to stand. She was apparently oblivious to the fact she was void of clothing or just didn't care.
"Jean," he called over his shoulder without breaking eye contact and it was only when a moment later a tall red-headed lady came in the room and stood next to him did she look away from those intense eyes and into the new smiling face.
"You're awake I see," said the woman called Jean, "That's great news. Logan, can you please let the Professor know that our guest has finally regained consciousness."
The violet eyes looked back to the man who hadn't taken his own eyes off of her again and with some hesitation he nodded at Jean and turned to walk out of the door. She watched the door for only a moment more than felt that a sheet was draping itself over her shoulders but the only other person in the room never moved. Her body tensed up and she crouched slightly. I didn't even sense any moment behind me. My senses must be off due to...whatever happened to me.
"Where am I?" she demanded, keeping her eyes on Jean but pulled the sheet around her. She had a pleasant face and striking green eyes but they held many stories and secrets. Jean took a seat on the end of the bed and regarded the stranger with a look of interest but instead of answering replied,
"We have to wait for the Professor to get here before I can answer that. You see, you arrived here in a very...unusual method and...Oh, here he is now."
Jean turned towards the door and an older, bald man glided in on a hovering chair followed closely by the man that Jean had referred to as Logan. Violet eyes watched him as he walked into the room. Despite being shorter than most men he was extremely muscular and carried himself in a way that displayed not only the skills of a warrior but the stealth of a hunter. She inhaled his scent as it gently brushed across her face as he and the bald man approached.
"I'm Professor Charles Xavier and apparently your method of arrival has caused quite a stir here at my school," the bald man said with a warm and gentle smile.
XAVIER! The name caused a roar in her ears and a fog to fill her head,
"Xavier? Earth?" she groaned as her head suddenly felt like it was going to split into two and she grabbed at it with shaking hands. A strong hand held her arm, steadying her, and guided her to sit on the edge of the bed. She pulled away from the grip as soon as she was seated.
"You alright, darlin'?" Logan's voice asked from right beside her.
She squeezed her eyes tight before opening them and glancing up at him. She nodded slightly and looked at the one called Xavier. The look that passed between Xavier and Jean didn't go unnoticed.
"I...I can't remember. Pieces are there but..." she shook her head, "I can't seem to remember everything."
Xavier held out his hand and she noticed that he had a pleasant floral smell to him. "May I?" he asked.
She looked at the hand and then up to Logan. She wasn't sure why she trusted him, he was a complete stranger to her but seeking his advice gave her a feeling of comfort, like he was to be trusted. He nodded and she couldn't pull her eyes away from his. She had never felt an attraction of this type to any man before and on her world she had had many lovers over the years. This stranger who radiated so much raw and feral energy intrigued her and keeping her eyes locked with his she placed her hand into Xavier's.
Her eyes shot wide open as memories came flooding back to her in a fierce wave. She was slamming against the cool metal walls of the Shi'ar cruiser that had been assigned to bring her to Earth. She remembered everything in as much time as it took to take a single breath. The flashing of the lights around her and the grip of the guard as he held onto her arm. She recalled the smell of charred electrical and burning flesh as well as the screams and yells of the people on the ship. She ripped her hand away from Xavier's and clutched it to her chest like he had burned her, his floral scent following.
"What did you do to me?" she demanded, suddenly afraid.
"There was a block in your mind, perhaps caused by trauma, I simply opened it," he responded. "Lilandra sent you to me? Why didn't she contact me to tell me that you were coming?" His brows drew together in thought.
Jean spoke next, "Lilandra? Is this girl a member of the Shi'ar?"
Xavier shook his head, "Perhaps we should allow Lo'Rae to tell us her own story." He smiled gently at her and although she was slightly started that he knew her name, she also knew that she shouldn't really be too surprised. Her empress had told her that he was a great man who knew much but was this the same Xavier the ruler of her people had spoken so highly of? This man who just forced her to recall the deaths of so many who died protecting her?
"My lady Lilandra commanded that I join Charles Xavier here on Earth to learn under his guidance. I'm to train with him until I have mastered control over my mutant powers,"
"The first mutant born to your planet in over two thousand year, isn't that correct?" He asked.
She cocked her head to the side and regarded him for a moment then nodded, "That is correct." she answered slowly. How does he know such things? "Being gifted with abilities is an anomaly for my people. There are races within the Shi'ar empire who have the abilities of their race but my people are not one of them and those who have been born with them in the past had gifts that were so insignificant they weren’t seen as important. My empress feels that my gifts may cause...difficulties for my people," she looked down at her hands, suddenly feeling homesick.
"Professor?" Jean questioned.
"It appears, from what I learned from reading Lo'Rae's mind, that her planet is war-like."
Lo'Rae nodded, "That is correct. When a child show any type of promise as a warrior they are taken to be trained. My father was a weapons master and I have been training with my elder brothers since I could walk. When my...gift," she cringed at the word, "first manifested during a training battle, our empress was summoned. She felt that some may try to use my gifts for their own personal gain and in order to keep my people and myself safe, she decided that I would be brought here. My abilities could prove to be beneficial our enemies."
"And what do you think happened while you were on your journey here?"
"I believe that our ship may have been attacked. I don't know why. I had been sleeping in my chambers and the next thing I know I was jerked awake by one of the guards and shoved into an escape pod," Lo'Rae's eyes got a faraway look in them and her hands clinched into fists as she remember what had happened, "Then something hit my pod and I knew I needed to get away."
A large, warm hand on her lower back, Logan's hand, pulled her attention back and she looked into Xavier's eyes. She knew she could trust him then. "I wanted to find you."
He smiled up at her, "And so you did."
His smile was warm and gentle and after a moment’s hesitation, she smiled back. Lilandra had sent her to Earth to train with this man. She had told Rae that he could be trusted and that his team were good and strong warriors, warriors would had much to teach her about her powers, the planet and about herself. They would be her new family and she had to put her faith in them.
"We have much to learn about each other, Lo'Rae. I wish to hear more about yourself and your planet but in time. For now you must get some rest. Your body needs time to heal and to adjust. Logan has requested that I allow him to watch over you for the time being so he will be escorting you to your room."
She looked at Logan and smiled at him. He smiled back.
Look at that smile, he thought to himself, a smile like that could drop old Sinister to his knees. She smells amazing, almost like cherry blossoms...no, orange blossoms. Orange blossoms and fresh air. And those eyes...get a fucking grip on yourself, Wolverine! You hardly know the girl and you’re already gettin' all mushy and shit.
"Alright. Let's go try and get you all settled in. I know it ain't your home yet but hopefully it will be comfortable."
"I will send Jubilee up to meet you with some clothing for her, Logan." Jean said as Rae followed him out the door.
Logan shook his head, "Jubes may not have been the best choice for that one, Jeanie," he muttered under his breath.
"Jubes?" Rae asked.
"You heard that?" Logan asked, surprised.
Rae cocked her head a little at him, "Of course. I can hear just fine."
He regarded her for a moment, "Got some good ears on you, huh?"
She shrugged, "No different than anyone else on Tar'lal."
"That where you’re from? Your planet?"
She nodded, looking around as they walked. They had reached a door and when Logan pushed a button the door slid open. She was surprised and even more so when they stepped inside and it was a tiny room. The door slid shut behind them and after a moment the room began to move. Rae gasped and grabbed ahold of Logan.
"The floor is moving!" she whispered and Logan laughed. It was a nice throaty laugh but why was he laughing at her?
"It's an elevator, darlin'. It's what it does. I take it there are no elevators where you come from?"
She shook her head and slowly stood up straight, "There is nothing like this at home. We make all our own tools, nothing of machines or anything like that. The ship, it was strange to me. I didn't like it. It wasn't...natural." She placed a hand against the walls of the elevator but it dinged to a stop and the door slid open.
On the other side of the door was a teenage girl with short black hair blowing a huge bubble.
"Hiya, Wolvie. Jean sent me to meetcha. This must be the new girl, huh? Hiya! Names Jubliee!" she stuck out a hand towards Rae and Rae grabbed her forearm in the formal warrior greeting.
"I'm Lo'Rae."
Jubilee was a little startled at first by Rae grabbing her forearm but quickly recovered.
"I'm so glad that there is someone else my age around here. I'm going crazy having no one to talk to!"
"You're also 114?"
"Uh...not exactly. You're 114? That's insane! You don't look 114. People must age differently on your planet. 114. How cool. So...how old does that make you in, you know, Earth years? You know? No? I bet Hank could figure it out easily..." Jubilee kept chatting as they continued the journey up to the dorm rooms.
I like her. She's more high energy that anyone I've ever known but it suits her very well. My people are so serious, always focused on battle and training. This Jubilee talks of everything but, even stuff I don't know about.
Rae stopped dead in her tracks and sniffed at the air.
"What is that?" she asked the two beside her.
"What is what?" Jubilee asked.
Rae continued to sniff at the air, "That smells. It's delicious!" she exclaimed and started to move toward the smell, her stomach letting out a grumble.
"Smells like dinner," Logan answered, "Smells like we're having roast tonight. Hope Gambit doesn't over cook it again. Come on, let's get you to your room and into some clothes. Can't have you goin' to dinner dressed in a sheet."
Rae looked down at herself, only just remembering that she was still wearing the sheet.
"I can't smell anything!" said Jubilee, exasperated.
"Keen hearing and smell, huh?" Logan said as they started up the stairs. Rae just shook her head,
"Not anything different than what everyone else on my world has."
"Perhaps people on your world have better senses than most folks here do," he shrugged, "You did say that your planet was war-like. Perhaps it makes sense that your senses would be more acute." They stopped in front of a long hallway with doors lining both sides. "Alright, kid, take her to her room. Not sure which one Chuck assigned her."
"I do! She's at the end of the hall. C'mon, Rae." Jubilee grabbed Rae's hand and pulled her down the hall.
"Thank you, Logan," she said to him over her shoulder.
"Not a problem, darlin'."
