Chapter 2
-----
Jubilee hadn't really paid much attention to the van at first, but as the girl opened it up and invited her inside, and Jubilee got a good look at it, it became obvious pretty quickly that the girl was living in it. There was a lot of trash, mostly food wrappers and such, and a single bed. Oddly enough there wasn't a kitchenette, and with the array of odd equipment it looked more like a converted ambulance than a camper. It was a mess, to say the least, but it was something. Especially if it ran. So the first thing she did was ask the girl if it did indeed run.
A shrug was her only reply.
She gave the girl a bit of an odd look, then shrugged in return and climbed up into the driver's seat. The girl didn't object, only watching her. Fortunately, the keys were in the ignition, and she turned it on. The dash lights responded weakly, and that combined with the dust suggested it had been a little while at least since it had been started. Giving a little prayer, she turned the key, and was greeted by the familiar grinding whine of the starter trying to kick over. Well, that was a semi-positive sign. Maybe it was just weak from having sat up too long, that happened. She tried again, working the gas to try to get it to catch, and eventually she was rewarded by the satisfying roar of the engine coming to life. She grinned and gave a cry of elation, before putting it into gear to check if the transmission worked too. Her grin grew wider as the van gave a satisfying lurch and rolled backwards obligingly in response to the gas. They had wheels!
She paused and looked over to the girl and figured she should explain herself before driving off in her van. "Umm we gotta get out of here... you mind if I drive?"
The girl just shrugged again, and Jubilee nodded to her and pulled out of the alley slowly, looking for any sign of being spotted, and when she didn't see any, she pulled out slowly and merged into the traffic of the streets as casually as possible.
"Is this thing legal?", she asked as the girl slipped into the passenger seat. Yet again, the girl only shrugged.
"Hells, we'll have to risk it and hope we don't get pulled over." Then she frowned and asked, "Do you talk at all?"
The girl shrugged again and nodded this time. It was starting to get on Jubilee's nerves. So she turned on the radio instead of listening to the silence, seeking out a rock station, and settled on the sounds of Guns 'n' Roses' "You Could Be Mine" from the crappy stock speakers. Jubilee smirked, figuring it was fitting to be hearing that particular song after fleeing a Los Angeles shopping mall in a possibly stolen vehicle from potential killers. She was just happy at this point that none of them seemed to be liquid metal killer robots from a postapocalyptic future. That was probably the last thing either of them needed.
But judging by the soft ping and the light on the dashboard, the first thing they needed was gas. Which presented a particular problem. She looked over at the girl and asked if she had any cash, but she could have anticipated the nonverbal negative she got in reply. That made two of them that were broke, then. And they weren't going to get very far on a full-sized van's reserve tank. The first thing she considered was pulling a drive-off, but dismissed that as a last resort at best considering they could hardly afford the attention that would bring to them. The best thing she could think to do at that point was to go to ground somewhere, and then come up with a plan from there for getting some funds. And seeing as it would be better to save what little gas they had until they were sure they could secure more, she pulled off the main roads immediately and hunted for them a good safe and secluded spot to park.
As she turned off the motor, she turned to the girl to explain. "We're almost out of gas, and I don't have any money. We're gonna have to find a way to score some quick cash and get back on the road before they find us."
The girl frowned, and spoke up for the first time. "Why not stand and fight?"
Jubilee blinked. "Are you kidding me? I saved your life back there! What would you have done if I hadn't come al--"
The sudden stop came because rather than replying, the girl had cut her off by simply extending her arm and making a fist, and two gleaming, wicked twelve-inch blades had popped from it with a sound like a switchblade knife. There weren't many times in Jubilee's life that she had been struck speechless, but this was one of those times. Her point made, the girl simply nodded and relaxed her fist, the blades retracting with a soft metallic snap.
Jubilee stared, blinking more before finally finding her voice. "Wh --what are you?"
The girl just softly shrugged.
Jubilee softly choked out. "You're not human..."
Again the girl shrugged. "They made me to kill."
Jubilee blinked yet again as she absorbed this, then thinking quickly she took a new tack. "Well I helped you out, and I have a plan. You owe me, so you need to do as I say, ok? It'll be better that way, we'll work better as a team if we're on the same page."
The girl's only response was silence, and Jubilee held her breath as she waited to see if her gambit would pay off or if she'd be the one to pay.
Finally, the girl shrugged. "Okay. For now."
Jubilee just grinned... for now at least, it seemed she had her very own Terminator.
