Anna Marie grinned at Cody Robbins as they ate their Popsicles by the creek. This was the way she liked to spend the summer days; a cool treat and a hot boy, especially when she knew that boy had a crush on her. They finished the frozen treats in a companionable silence, enjoying the shade from the trees and the cool water flowing over their feet where they dangled in.
“So, Anna… you’re tellin’ me a pretty gal lahk you ain’t never been kissed?” Cody smirked at her.
She tossed her dark reddish hair playfully and batted her long eyelashes at him. “Ah’m afraid so.” She sighed melodramatically. “Maybe Ah’ll just dah an old maid that’s never kissed a boy.”
He leaned closer. “Ah can’t let that happen. And Ah happen t’ know you never turn down a dare. Dare ya t’ kiss me, Anna Marie.”
She demurred playfully at first, but he was right and she soon gave in, leaning in happily to oblige him. That was when it all went wrong. Her lips touched his and it felt like fire and ice pouring into her. She wanted to pull away but was too frozen by shock to move. Memories not her own flooded into her mind, crowding her.
When it was all over, Cody was lying there on the bank, deathly pale and barely breathing. Anna Marie ran, screaming for help as she went. Her father left to drive Cody to the hospital, his silent fury enough to tell her to be gone before he returned. She packed hurriedly, fighting back tears, and made her way to the bus depot.
Something bad could easily have happened to her, a sixteen-year-old girl traveling on her own, had she not run into Raven Darkholme. The woman had offered her a place to stay until she could find her own feet. She was so kind and understanding; Anna ended up pouring her heart out to Raven, telling her how she had put her would-be beau into a coma. It was then that Raven revealed that she was a mutant too, that she would help her. So it was that Rogue came under Mystique’s guidance. And when Mystique joined with Magneto to form a Brotherhood of Mutants, Rogue followed.

St. John Allerdyce scowled as he shut off his laptop to stop the words on the screen from taunting him. He didn’t want to write, now that he was blacklisted and couldn’t get published any more. But the Muses didn’t seem to care.
“Heartless bints,” he muttered. He’d managed to hide his mutation since it went active in his teenage years, making a name for himself as a writer. But then someone had found him out and started a media circus. People automatically assumed that his novels were somehow seditious even though they had nothing to do with mutants.
He turned away from the desk and staggered, nearly falling when he saw the silver-haired man that most certainly had not been there before. Because he rarely used his powers, it took him several startled moments before he reached for his lighter, and by then the Zippo was floating toward the strange man’s outstretched hand.
“Calm yourself, Mr. Allerdyce, I’m here to make you an offer.” The man’s pale blue eyes twinkled with amusement.
St. John managed to regain his balance and eyed him warily. “First things first, mate. Who the hell are ya and how the hell d’ya know me name?”
He examined the lighter with interest. “My name is Erik Lensherr, though you probably have heard of me by the name I chose for myself… Magneto. As for your name, I learned of it the same way I imagine quite a lot of people have… through your books and the news.”
The Australian stared in surprise. “You’ve… read me books?”
He nodded. “I have done my research and feel you have great potential in both of your talents. Which is why I feel it’s such a pity the discovery of one ruined the public’s view of the other. Therefore, I wish to give you the chance humanity would deny you: the opportunity to develop both of your talents to their fullest.”
“Yeah, well… the fire powers ain’t much t’ be proud of anyway… I can’t generate the fire, just control it.”
Magneto chuckled. “Like any gift, our powers do not spring forth fully formed. They must be honed, cultivated. Perhaps in time you might learn that you can do more than you ever dreamed possible.”
He swallowed. “Ya mean… I might be able t’ make the fire, but I just never knew?”
“There is one way to find out. What do you say? Will you join my Brotherhood of Mutants?”
St. John grinned. “Count me in, mate.”
He tried to come up with a clever name for himself as a mutant, but Rogue and Mystique took to calling him Pyro, and the name stuck. He told himself it could have been worse. At least they didn’t pick something insulting like Firefly or Matchstick. Or Zippo.
As time passed, Magneto gathered many mutants to his cause, but he selected the strongest to form the core of the Brotherhood, the ones he sent on the most difficult missions. In addition to Mystique, Rogue, and Pyro, this group consisted of a Londoner named Mortimer Toynbee, called Toad for his extremely long tongue; Texan Fred Dukes, alias Blob; and Greek Dominikos Ioannis Petrakis, known as Avalanche.
