Chapter 2
Later that night, he sensed something or someone was there, and couldn't move. Was it someone's power holding him down or something else?
"You have something that belongs to me," Jean said clearly.
Logan blinked awake, sitting up in bed. He glanced sidelong at her, and saw her standing just inside his window. How in hell had she gotten here without him waking? The window was open, and he knew from the scent that she must have flown up here.
Around her billowed a silk nightdress. Logan smelled the tang of arousal, and groaned. It had to be a dream, considering what he just went through a few hours earlier. Yet his senses were alert and alive enough that he knew wakefulness from sleep. Even if he was on the knives' edge of insanity at times.
"Hello Red," he said as calmly as possible.
"My underwear, Logan. Give them back," Jean said.
"IS that all?" he chuckled, reaching under his pillow and holding them. "You SURE you want them back."
"C'mon you little pervert, you got your kicks… give 'em back…"
"So that's what ya think of me Jean? Some guy who's gotten his sick thrill?" Logan asked as he sat up, and she saw the dead seriousness in his eyes.
"Isn't that what it was? You probably saved both our lives, but I'm not going to let you get your secret kicks by keeping my panties as a trophy… to share with your drunken asshole buddies at Austers…"
"Jeannie you don't KNOW my friends, so don't you DARE judge me," Wolverine growled.
"You've got SOME nerve…"
"So have YOU!" Wolverine snarled, leaping out of bed and crouching as he stood by her. He threw the scrap of cloth at her, and they landed at her feet.
"Excuse me?" Jean asked, her eyes wide with something between disgust and surprise.
"You're the mind reader, you figure it out, lady," Logan grumbled. "If you do, you'd know that everything you're saying is so off beam it's not even FUNNY…"
"Who are you to be yelling at me?" Jean laughed harshly. "I wasn't the one who took advantage of…"
"You consented to it, Jeannie," he said. "And with it you had to realize why. It was never just a cheap lay for us, Jeannie. It was gonna be something special…"
"What?" Jean asked.
"Back when I thought ya died, I had an ache inside that was killing me…" Logan snarled. "And your boyfriend… he felt NOTHING!"
"You're nuts," Jean shook her head.
"He didn't feel a DAMN thing about you, Jean," said Logan angrily, stabbing the air with his finger. "Your big boyfriend and fiancée just didn't feel a thing!"
"Logan… you're…"
"Use your mind powers. I'm not lying Jean," Logan said. "Not about THIS…"
Invisible tendrils of her power snaked out, encompassing his thoughts. He dredged up those horrid days they had waited for some confirmation. Some way of knowing if they were dead or alive. Jean swallowed hard, and then blinked. "You are telling the truth…"
"Yeah, big flamin' deal," he said.
"And you did meet someone," she said with a hint of amusement.
"Someone I hardly know, Red. It was always you. Always."
"Why?" Jean asked.
"Don't always have an answer for that, Jeannie," he said flatly. "Just feel the way I do."
"I'm sorry, for what it's worth, Logan," Jean said as she sat down on the windowsill. Logan sunk to the bed, head in his hands as Jean sat in shock.
"Yeah s'om I Red," Logan muttered. "Go way all right? Lemme be…"
"No," Jean said. "Not now. Not after this… I can't just walk away…"
"Why not?" Logan asked harshly.
"Because…" she trailed off, and choked. "Don't you see… you were right, and I hated you for it… he doesn’t' understand and yet… I'm so scared I'll lose control and kill you all…"
"Red," Logan said as he saw her sitting there. He got up and sat next to her, his hand inches from touching her.
"Logan, I might become devoid of all emotion… and kill just because it feels good…"
"Not you Jean, you're better than that. If I can… you…"
"No Logan, I'm not strong enough…"
"Bullshit," Logan snapped. "I know you better than that, Red. You're strong enough to lick this. Control it."
"Not every stinking second of every day!"
"What do you think I do?" Logan asked. "Sit on my thumb and spin? Look, you can do it. And I can help you… if you'll let me…"
"How? Meditation… fighting? They're all not enough…"
"You're looking at the force all wrong. Fearing it, hating it like I hate my own demons, Jeannie. But it's part of you like my animal's part of me. You just gotta remind it whose boss, and let it out when it needs to be there to help you survive. Those little releases will be enough to keep it happy… and you said the Phoenix is a force of nature…"
"Like you?" she nodded.
"Yep," Logan nodded, taking her hand and squeezing it. "You helped me all those times. My turn now…"
She buried her head in his chest and he pulled her to sit on his lap. Jean didn't push him away, and she had to admit it was far more comfortable then the hard windowsill. His arms encircled her, and she sat there as he rocked her.
****
"Jean?" Logan asked as he shook her.
"Hmm?" she asked.
"Hate to bother ya, but ya fell asleep just then," Logan said. She groaned. He lifted her under her legs and she was aware of him carrying her towards his bed.
"What are you doing Logan?"
"Got two choices… either crash here, with me, or I carry ya back to your room…"
"No…" she gasped. "I mean… don't leave the room I…"
"So, your place or mine?" Logan laughed.
"That's not funny…" Jean groaned.
"We don’t' have to do anything, Jeannie," he said as he carried her gently over, and lay her carefully down on one side of the full bed. Thankfully they were all this size, not the dreaded twin beds that were hardly enough to turn over on.
"I'll even sleep on the damn floor if ya want… if that'll make you more comfortable…" he suggested with a twinkle in his eyes.
"Logan," she laughed as he pulled the covers around her, and she lay back.
"Japanese sleep on the floor," he shrugged.
"Logan?"
"What darlin?" he asked as he backed away from the bed.
"Thanks," Jean said with a chuckle as she sat there in his bed, and Logan was finding it awfully difficult to stop from reacting to the sight of her laying with the sheets draped over her. The mere thought of those curves hidden by moonwashed linen made his mouth water.
"You're welcome..." he said, turning his body away slightly as he grabbed the other pillow and tossed it to the floor. He lay down on the carpet, with his back slightly to her, and listened to the rustling of sheets nearby as she settled into a more comfortable position.
Each moment that passed increased the discomfort, and he found himself unable to sleep with the scent of her wafting in the night air, just two feet away. He considered heading to the bathroom after she was asleep, to relieve the desire he could not expunge for fear of her misunderstanding.
"Logan..." she said softly, and he heard the shifting of the mattress and the slight vibration through the floor of her body turning over. However imperceptible to most humans, he could hear the squeak of the boxspring.
"Yeah?" he murmured, not turning over.
"It's all right… you can sleep here…"
