Everyone hurried downstairs. Joshua rushed past Erik and leapt over the banister. The jump was immediate met with a chastisement from their father, “Joshua there are stairs for a reason, for you to go down them.”
He landed on the floor hard. Joshua lost his footing a little bit only to make a quick recovery. He bounded over the couch and slipped into his chair at the dinner table. It was Matka at end end of the table, papa at the other end. The children sat between them. Erik, Chava, and Hannah sat on the side of the table with the wall behind. Joseph, Joshua, and Elena’s high chair sat on the other side of the table. The good linens and silver were on the table. His family wasn’t rich but they weren’t poor either. His parent would have madeter ter money if they had lived in the cities, say Krakow or Warsaw. Matka didn’t believe that the city was as healthy of a place to live as the country. Papa said there was so much crime in the city. It was far safer in the country. He knew his neighbors here and they knew him.
Chava settled in her seat be hi him and reached over to brush a stray piece of hair out of his fact wat was always that one piece that kept escaping the careful arrangement he had made. They all chattered the way siblings do. It was a look from Papa that silenced them all. Matka placed the candles on the table, giving them a last adjustment. Then, the match flamed into life. It was touched to the wick of the candle and then … there was the roar of trucks coming up the road. Levi ripped open the front door just then, “The soldiers are coming. They stopped by my house already, they are burning papa’s book, the scripture.”
He took off running, not even bothering to close the door behind him. Matka was up in a flash. She had Elena in her arms, her purse over one shoulder, the coat already on herself and the baby. Papa had him just as quickly stuffing him into his coat and shoes. He didn’t say a word, he only gathered his family and their things in less than a minute and they were out the back door and into the woods.
There had been nothing that had happened around here but there had been rumors. They had traveled from the cities. They had said that all the Jews in Germany were being rounded up and forced into the ghettos. They had all believed they would be safe here. It was so far removed from the city. So many times, the soldiers had merely driven through this town. This was Poland, not Germany. But now they were here, the Germans were here.
Papa had been planning. Matka had family in England. Papa was a smart man. He had made provisions for his family if they Nazi’s were ever to come here. Erik was crushed against his mother’s side. Joseph was carrying Elena. Chava had his other hand. Not even Hannah had a clever thing to say. She clung to Joshua’s hand. Papa led the way. Not a word was spoken. They made a minimum of noise. After a little ways travel, Papa went back to lay a false trail. They all waited anxiously for him to rn. rn. He could see the fear in his mother’s face, the fear that papa wouldn’t come back. Erik began to get scared for the first time. The only possession he had with him was his violin. There was a noise in the woods, they all hid. Joseph handed Elena to Matka and went to check. Whoever it was, seemed to be making an awful lot of noise.
Chava was squeezing his hand so hard the bones ached. Every second tick of the clock stretched on for an eternity. Then the brush broke open and Joseph reappeared with papa. Erik was sure he would pass out from relief. Papa kissed them all in turn and they began to head deeper into the woods. Papa was heading towards the river. Erik had always had an excellent sense of direction and he knew the river. Papa explained in a very quiet voice, “I have hidden some supplies there. We will have to be careful with what we have until we make it to England. We will have to walk a lot. We will be alright.”
Erik believed in his father. He had never lied to him before. However, he wasn’t sure this was something papa could help. There were so many men with guns, the men with the strange spider on their coats that seemed to make everyone so nervous. They pressed on all night. Joseph handed Elena off to Chava and he picked Erik up. He was still so young, too young to have to be fleeing for his life through the woods in the middle of the night.
Erik slept in his brother’s arms as they traveled. He awakened in the morning with Chava trying to press him to eat the bit of bread and fish papa had caught. She looked so tired. Her eyes were red and rimmed with dark circles. Papa led them down into a cave where they could rest. Erik ate his fish and bread. It was dark in the cave. Papa said they couldn’t make a fire. It might be seen. Matka pulled her two youngest against her and held them as they slept.
They awakened when it was night again. Papa was shaking them gently awake. Chava, Hannah, and Matka were washing their faces in the bit if water in the cave. Erik joined them. He washed his face in the icy water. Wow that was cold. He dried his face on the cloth his mother held up to him. There was more fish, which his father had been smoking while they were asleep. He drankd wad water and ate the fish. Papa kept a close eye on the opening of the cave and then finally, no matter how tired they were, they headed off again.
Normally, even Erik might have had a word of complaint for the harsh trail they were forced along but he knew that somehow this was better than if the men with the guns had come.
This pace was kept for the next three days. Papa was attempting to stay away from Germany entirely, despite that being the most direct route. Papa had said as soon as they got to Switzerland they could rest. They would meet with Mr. Horowitz’s family. That sounded delightful to Erik, they had the best candy.
It was the border of Poland that was clearly the problem. It was positively riddled with guards. Papa and Matka went off to talk for awhile. Papa came back with a new plan, they would go to Russia instead. They didn’t have family there but they knew people there. Stalin was, after all, not Hitler. They would be safe there.
