An Interlude

Liv sat with her back against a tree in the garden, eyes closed and face turned up into the warm breeze of the late summer evening. Before she could react she felt a feather-light brush along her bare hand and her eyes shot open; the touch on her hand was a butterfly which she could now see through the connection.

A masculine laugh made both her and the insect startle, and she automatically recognized Warren. "You look beautiful out here, Liv, with the butterflies all around you." He touched her face where her hair covered the skin, careful to respect her wish of not touching.

"I don't know why it landed on me."

"They land on motionless things; you weren't moving at all, except for breathing." He sat down beside her, reaching for her gloved hand. "I haven't seen you in a few weeks, are you doing ok?"

Liv nodded. "Sorry for disappearing. The Professor offered to let me stay in a cabin up in British Columbia for a few weeks. I needed to get away from here."

Warren laughed softly. "Yeah, things can get kinda hectic. Did you enjoy yourself?"

A smile curved her lips. "I meant to stay four weeks, but after three I was a bit stir crazy, so I came back. I got some paintings done while I was there, some landscapes." She blushed. "I found that if I touch the ground, it extends to everything the ground itself touches. Trees, flowers, mountains … I spent a lot of time barefoot."

He laughed louder, smiling as she scooted close to him and let his wing curve around her. He couldn't believe how comfortable she seemed to be with him after only a few months; just the week before she had asked to touch him, to be able to see him. She'd asked because she had discovered a way to not have her visions; it was almost like flipping a switch in her head. She wouldn't have touched him if she hadn't had that ability.

Liv still wasn't sure how she felt about that. It didn't change how she felt about him, how she was beginning to feel about him; whether she could see his face or not, he was beautiful to her. She had a painting hidden in her closet, a painting of him. Not his aura, but him. She wasn't sure she'd ever let anyone see it.

She let her head rest on his shoulder as they fell into silence, not really realizing how relaxed she was around him. Scott and Logan had managed to get her to open up, Scott always there to listen when she needed to talk, Logan teaching her to vent her anger through martial arts. Both had become close friends; the only female she felt comfortable with was Rogue. The empathy she shared with the woman was enough to make them friends.

Warren absently stroked her dark red hair, his head resting against hers. It was peaceful in the garden, one of the few places of true quiet on school grounds. Only Ororo and w otw others ever went there.

"Logan told me that they want me to join the X-Men." Liv's voice broke the silence. "I don't understand why, though. I don't have any sort of offensive powers."

"You have an intuition that most people don't have, even without your powers." He looked down at her. "You probably wouldn't go on missions; they would prob hav have you stay behind as a coordinator or something."

She nodded. "That's about all I could do. I have to say I'm honored they even considered me." She laid her head back on his shoulder.

"I would be, too." He expected that it wouldn't be too long before they approached him; there couldn't be any other reason for the increaseainiaining in the Danger Room. "You'd make a great superhero."

Liv just laughed.
