Chapter 19
"Your plan is to break into the palace and steal Odin's sceptre? Are you mad? The palace is the most heavily guarded place on Asgard and everyone is looking for you! And you want to walk back in there?" Freyr shouts.
"Everyone is looking for me. They don't expect me to show up in the palace. We need to move now while most of the guards are out on the hunt," Loki calmly explains.
"I won't be able to teleport us in and out like before. I already tried that. That way has been blocked."
"Well I can't expect Odin to make the mistake of not having the palace walls enchanted again. He probably had that done immediately," Loki tells him. "We will simply have to gain access another way.”
The palace
Shelia wakes up in Loki's bed. She is alone in the room. Getting up she can tell by the bandage on her arm that Dr. Banner must have been back to check on her. She opens the door to the room and finds 2 guards stationed outside. They make no effort to stop her as she heads to the throne room. When she gets there she finds Frigga.
"What happened? Where is Loki?" She asks Frigga.
"He escaped. Shelia, we need to know if you have any idea where he is."
"I don't know. He told me he was going to face Odin's judgement, that he wouldn't run. There has to be an explanation for this."
“I'm afraid you may not have a full picture of what he is capable of. We had hoped that he really had changed, but this does not bode well," Frigga tells her. The queen thinks about her visit to Heimdall before checking on Shelia. She had asked the guardian to look for her son and Freyr. His report was not encouraging and when he informed her of Loki’s and Freyr making plans to change Loki from his human form, her heart sank.
"The Loki I know wouldn't do this," Shelia insists.
Frigga sighs and begins to lead Shelia back to Loki's room. "What do you remember from the sentencing?"
"Not much really. Odin was talking and then that's it," Shelia admits.
"Just before Loki escaped, his accomplice, Freyr, a powerful visionary, said that Loki will have a child that will be a powerful sorceress," Frigga tells her.
Shelia enters Loki's room and closes the door behind Frigga, but says nothing.
"Shelia, Loki told me what happened to you. I know you cannot have children."
Still the younger woman says nothing. "You understand the implications of this don't you?" The queen asks. She is not sure what to make of Shelia's silence.
"Yes, I understand what you are saying. You are telling me that a man appeared and said Loki will have a child and that he escaped. You want me to believe that it was his intention to escape and that he is now going to continue with whatever plans and schemes he has and that includes having a child with another woman," Shelia finally answers angrily.
"Shelia, I know this is hard to accept," She begins as she steps forward to embrace her.
"I won't believe it. I can't believe it," Shelia sobs. "He is better than this. I know it."
"I wish that were true, I hope it is true" Frigga whispers. When Shelia doesn’t respond, Frigga asks, “Do you know what a waypoint is?”
“A waypoint? What’s that?”
After a moment of thought Frigga begins to explain, “Time flows much like a river, always in motion, moving, changing. It is fluid. Which means that although the future flows in a general direction, the path it takes can be changed. Except for certain waypoints. A waypoint is a set event. An event that will happen and cannot be changed. These waypoint don’t occur often, but they are critical points in time.”
“I don’t understand what this has to do with Loki,” Shelia tells Frigga.
“One of the things Freyr said before he and Loki escaped was that Loki having a child to unite the realms is one such waypoint.”
“I see,” Shelia answers, quietly staring down at her hands. “And what if he is wrong?”
“Freyr’s family is gifted with the ability to see the future. It is unlikely that he is wrong about this,” Frigga tells her.
“But if this is a waypoint and will happen anyway, then why take Loki at all?” Shelia asks growing more and more distraught.
Leaning in to wrap a comforting arm around the younger woman Frigga tells her, “This is why it makes us believe they may be working together.”
Shelia pulls away from Frigga "What do you know about messages from dreams?" She asks abruptly.
"I know that it takes powerful magic to speak to someone through a dream. Why do you ask?"
"When Loki first arrived on Earth he told me that Odin came to him in his sleep. I was wondering if that is common and how do you know if it's a message or just a dream?"
"It can be hard to tell the difference. Why do you ask?"
"When I was injured I dreamed about a young girl many times. Sometimes she was only a small child sometimes she was older. She would come sit by my bedside and hold my hand. She would tell me that the time was coming soon."
"Time for what?" Frigga asks.
"To send me back here," Shelia responds."
"And you don't know who she is?"
"No, but I dreamed of her again. She was older and told me that we would meet soon."
"Did she say anything else?" Frigga asks.
"She said I blacked out at the sentencing because she needed to protect me. She said she cannot exist if my love for Loki is tarnished and that he will find a way back to me," the younger woman continues, not mentioning that this time the girl had blue skin. She knows the girl had the look of the Jotun. Loki had explained his complicated heritage to her.
"It's possible that it's a message, but usually you have to know the person to be able to appear in their dream."
"She seemed to know me even though I didn't know her. At least not yet," Shelia explains.
"I understand your desire to believe in him. I hope that you're right," Frigga says as she exits the room. She has much to discuss with the Allfather.
