Darkness cleared as eyes opened and glanced around the room. Quickly the eyes closed to a squint, the glaring ceiling light boring into the person’s eyes. The eyes darted around within their sockets, a steady rhythmic beep could be heard, a noise they recognized as a monitor, and the sight of a white hospital curtain could be caught within the person’s line of vision.
Jason blinked as his eyes adjusted to the light, and he relaxed into the hospital mattress. He glanced towards the mattress when he didn’t feel the sensation of cold metal, or the pain of the device his father had implanted into his spine.
‘Then… I’m not at the facility…. Where am I?’ The man wondered to himself. At that moment the hospital curtain pulled back and he heard the sound of heels clicking against tile floor as someone approached. She had fiery red hair, styled in ringlet curls that cascaded down just past her shoulders, sky blue eyes that had bags under them, and she held a disposable Styrofoam coffee cup in her hand. The beverage within the cup steaming as she leaned over the hospital bed, a relieved and delighted smile crossed her scarlet lips and seemed to brighten her weary face as her fatigued but joyous voice greeted him, “Welcome back, Jason.”
He regarded her for a moment, a name on the tip of his tongue that he wanted desperately to speak, but feared to.
“I promised I’d find you… although it was really our son that found you,” The woman continued as she sat on the edge of his hospital bed. Her expression saddened as she watched him, her eyes seemingly searching for something.
After a few more moments her eyes began to fill with tears as she asked, “Did you forget me?”
“Elizabeth,” Jason breathed.
Elizabeth smiled again, but the tears began making their way down her face as her free hand cupped over Jason’s.
“I told you I’d never forget you,” Jason added.
“Same,” Elizabeth replied, her voice strained as she held back a few sobs.
“How?” Jason asked.
Elizabeth let out a heavy sigh and she took a deep breath, regaining composure before she replied, “Jimmy… well he goes by ‘Logan’ now. I asked him to give you some blood during your surgery… sometimes his healing factor if transfused into another person’s body, it can help speed their recovery… or even cure them. It was Uncle Jimmy’s blood that saved my life all those years ago. No one really thought to try it until your father witnessed him getting hit in the head with a steel beam during an earthquake. It knocked him out, but he quickly regained consciousness and your Dad witnessed the wound healing right before his eyes… that’s how he got the idea.”
“That’s where the experimenting began,” Jason concluded.
Elizabeth nodded, “Yes.”
She looked to Jason, “I married to hide our son from him… or try to, and I have a daughter with him as well.”
“I see,” Jason replied, his shoulders sagging a little.
“Jason…. My husband’s gay. I knew when I married him. It was his idea when he found out I was expecting our son… so that your father would have a harder time finding him... and I changed my surname before I married so even the marriage certificate and my University degree wouldn’t bare my birth name. It took longer for him to locate us with that… and once he did… Nate and Logan helped me to keep our son safe,” Elizabeth admitted.
“At the cost of Logan’s family… I was there… when he experimented on Ruby… that little girl,” Jason began, before his face twisted at the memory.
Elizabeth set the beverage down and cupped Jason’s face between her hands, “Jason…”
“I couldn’t stop him… I couldn’t break him. I wasn’t strong enough to but… she left believing she was in her parents arms,” Jason revealed.
Elizabeth felt the air leave her lungs as she leaned into Jason, hugging him tightly while her own silent tears for Logan’s youngest child fell.
After a moment, making sure her voice was steady she answered, “I’m sure she’s grateful for that. If Logan remembered, I know he would be too. I’ll never know how someone so gentle came from such a monster.”
Jason nuzzled into Elizabeth’s neck, quietly sobbing while Elizabeth held him. Taking in her scent a single thought passed through his mind, ‘I missed you, Lizzie.’
Neither knew how long they remained like that, when Elizabeth shifted out of the hug, she looked to Jason and gave a small smile, “Nate and I are getting divorced. He has a boyfriend and he deserves to be happy.”
Jason gave her an inquisitive look, “What about you?”
“I have two children, a high paying career…. And the one person I could never forget finally safe. I’ve never been happier than I am right now,” Elizabeth answered.
“Liz… come here,” Jason beckoned.
Elizabeth moved a little closer, and Jason gave her an imploring look. Liz moved until she was an inch from Jason’s face. Jason lifted his head the final inch, pressing his lips against Elizabeth’s, and inwardly sighing with relief when he felt her responding to his kiss.
‘The whole time I was frozen… the whole time I had that device in me… all I could think about was you and the baby. The whole time, all of these years, I just wanted you… Elizabeth Stoner,’ Jason thought, wishing he could wrap her in his arms.
As if she read his mind, Elizabeth gently shifted Jason’s arms so she was clumsily held in them. Jason smiled into the kiss, inwardly chuckling when he felt her do the same and then rested back against the pillow.
“I’m always happy when I’m with you… well… alright except when you’re being a bullheaded busybody,” Jason replied, adding the last bit in as a joke.
“Oh? I thought you liked being bossed around,” Liz joked back.
“Depends on who is doing the bossing,” Jason admitted, his voice altering into a flirtacious tone.
“Oh dear me, you’re just out of surgery and already that’s starting. I’m in trouble,” Liz teased.
“Ah, shut up,” Jason replied with a slight chuckle.
“Even with his blood… I’m not gonna recover overnight, am I?” Jason asked.
“You could be in a wheelchair for years still,” Liz agreed.
“Damn it,” Jason sighed.
“But we’ll get there. You didn’t leave me once you knew I was sick… now it’s my turn,” Liz stated.
“I couldn’t leave you. It was awful… seeing you like that but… I wouldn’t have forgiven myself if I had left,” Jason revealed.
Elizabeth’s mind shot back to the first illusion Jason put her in and her eyes grew wider.
“If I don’t make it… please don’t forget me,” Elizabeth whispered.
“Don’t talk like that,” Jason almost scolded.
“Please promise me,” Liz pleaded.
Silence. Silence that seemed to last an eternity and keep the earth from spinning on its axis before Jason softly replied, “I could never forget you.”
She felt him shifting closer to her, but could tell his eyes were up at the sky. He breathed out a whisper, “you’re my whole life.”
Liz wet her lips as she felt her eyes welling up again.
“What’s wrong?” Jason asked, a hint of panic in his voice as his eyes searched hers.
“Nothing,” Liz replied.
“The first time you showed me what you could do… I heard your whisper something… but I never realized til now what it was that you whispered,” Liz admitted.
“It’s true. Without you, there really isn’t much to my life,” Jason omitted.
“Hope you were never fool enough to think you were the only one. You’re the whole reason I got into politics… if I hadn’t… I wouldn’t have met Nathaniel… I wouldn’t have Kiara… and I most definitely wouldn’t still have Caleb, even before that… my family was always you, Dad and Jimmy,” Liz confessed.
“I know,” Jason replied.
“Neither of us could ever forget each other… so let’s keep going on together,” Jason suggested.
“I’d like that,” Liz admitted.
Miles away in Raleigh North Carolina, a fifteen-year-old girl with milky skin, sea foam green hair, and emerald eyes sat at her computer. Her clothing consisted of black warm up pants, and a black sleeveless crop top, showing off a muscular and toned physique from kick boxing. Boxing trophies lined her dresser, telling of her victories. Slender hands flew across the keyboard as she typed out a message before moving the mouse and clicking a button. She looked at the picture on her computer desk, of her fourteenth birthday, when her hair was still black. She stared for a moment at the ‘girl’ next to her, whom she’d known to truly been a boy at heart. His auburn hair was pulled back into a pony tail, he wore a Carolina Hurricane’s hat, it was on backwards. Paired up with a matching T-shirt, and it was detectable that the jeans he wore were oversized on him. His chest was bound by bandages underneath the shirt that the two of them had applied and his eyes danced, merrily. His mouth was opened at an odd angle, his tongue hanging out of the corner. He held two fingers behind the girl’s head while she had a duck face pout in the photo.
‘Hard to believe it’s been almost two years. So much can happen… are you even still alive, EJ?’ the teenager thought to herself as she studied the photo.
‘If I just knew you were okay… I could let it go. Where are you? Do you even think about the old town anymore?’ She wondered to herself.
“Jessica, we’re gonna be late!” a man’s voice called up the stairs to her.
“Alright, Dad,” Jessie hollered back as she picked up a gym bag as she stood up and slung it over her shoulder. She left the room as the file continued uploading until a youtube page showed up, ‘video submitted. ‘Hero’ – An AMV for EJ.’
