Chapter 17: Entr’Acte
- Contro
The daughter of Magneto smiled a wistful smile, her cheeks aglow. “Unfortunately,” she sighed, “I’ve not seen her since. A shame, really – I’d have loved to, ah, entertain her again.” Wanda chewed her lip and looked around the room to gauge the other girls’ reactions. Mentally, she braced herself for the worst.Few of the young women could mask their discomfort, Amara foremost among them. Jubilee maintained a neutral, almost bored, expression. Tabby’s lips curled in their usual mischievous, sultry smirk. Rogue’s brows furrowed into a puzzled expression.Amara managed to smooth her features into a practiced smile, one likely used for public appearances. “Thank you for sharing your story, Wanda,” she managed, as sincerely as she could. The princess started to say more, but seemed to think better of it.“Oh. Mah. Gawd!” blurted Rogue.Jean glanced at her Southern friend, sensing the distress and disgust radiating from her. “What’s wrong, Rogue?” she asked, though she was almost afraid to do so.Nose wrinkled, Rogue answered, “Ah think Ah know who that gal was.” She gave her roommate a pained look. “Her name was Risty Wahld. She was mah friend a whahl during mah senior year.”“It sounds like you two had a falling-out,” Wanda ventured. “I know it wasn’t when she found out you were a mutant.”Rogue shook her head and sighed. “No, but Ah found out who she really was,” she replied. “At the Descanso Rivets concert, one o’ mah sleeves got torn. Ah got moshed into her ‘n absorbed her.” The other girls shifted, several of them remembering the chaos of that night and who caused it and how. Even those who were uninvolved could sense that Rogue was stalling.“Go on,” urged her roommate. “I can handle it.”“Risty was…” Rogue began, but ground almost instantly to a halt. The Southerner breathed deep and tried again, but to no avail. “Mystique,” she finally managed.Wanda’s already-pale skin managed to lose even more color. “You’re… you’re not joking, are you?” she mumbled, her volume falling with each word.Catching just enough of her roomie’s words, Rogue shook her head, a small, concerned smile on her lips. “Ah wish ta Gawd Ah was, sugah,” she added with a slight wince. The lesbian wrinkled her nose and cleared her throat. She shifted positions several times, as if unable to sit comfortably. She kneaded the fabric of her nightgown and stared at her feet, not daring to look at the other girls.“Lass, ye look rraet grreen arround th’ gills,” Rahne noted.Wanda swallowed. “I do feel a bit sick to my stomach,” she replied. After another moment, she looked at the others and managed a strained, brittle smile. “Maybe it’s just a side effect of turning straight suddenly,” she joked, if a bit flat in her delivery. Most of the girls maintained their composure, with a restrained smile occasionally threatening to form. Jubilee was the first to catch the giggles, followed closely by Tabby, then by the others, except for Jean and Danielle who maintained concerned expressions.“Sorry,” apologized the San Franciscan native, “sorry for laughing, but that was pretty funny.” Wanda shook her head. “It’s alright. I wouldn’t have said that if I didn’t want anyone to laugh.”Jubilee cleared her throat and clarified, “I definitely get what you mean, though; you’re totally and completely put off by sex. That’s basically where I’ve been for a while now.” Wanda nodded thoughtfully.Jean tucked a strand of scarlet hair behind her ear. “Are you okay, Wanda?” she asked, hoping to catalyze a reaction from the young woman, a cathartic reaction to help her purge the distress and disgust the telepath could still sense swirling about her.“I will be, eventually,” replied the reality-bender. “I do feel ill, though,” she added, rising to her feet. “With apologies to our hostess, I must excuse myself for a bit.”Rogue allowed her a headstart before following; she caught up to her roommate in the first-floor corridor, just out of earshot of the room where Amara had held the party. “Wanda, wait up,” she called. The other goth girl froze but did not turn to face her roommate. She leaned on her arm against the wall as though she were about to swoon. She said nothing, seemingly not trusting herself to speak.“Ah just wanted ta tell ya,” began the Southerner, “you ain’t alone.”Wanda turned her head fractionally in Rogue’s direction. “I’m not?” she asked, the hope kindling in her voice.“Mystique used me, too,” Rogue confided, “as often as she could.”“Before your powers activated.”“After,” Rogue corrected, now confused.“Oh!” Wanda gasped. “You didn’t mean…”“No! Ah can’t imagine…”“You said you absorbed her,” Wanda half-accused, half-asked.“Ah did,” replied Rogue. “Ah don’t have that memory; she musta gone there afterward, once her cover was blown.”Wanda did not respond right away. “I’m a little relieved,” she sighed, “and a little disappointed.”“Whah?”Now Wanda turned around to face her roommate. Tears had blazed trails down her cheeks to her chin. From there they had fallen, to spatter her sternum in a Rorshach-test pattern from clavicles to cleavage. Light striking the moisture produced a shimmer that Rogue found rather distracting, since it drew her eye to that area.“Because if you had that memory of… of being with me,” she answered, “then it might help you see me the way I see you.” Her cheeks reddened at the admission.Rogue blinked, and her mouth opened and shut several times wordlessly. “Wanda, Ah knew ya checked me out sometahms…”The other girl looked at her feet, guilt written all over her face. “That’s not all,” she confessed. “I, um, pretend to be asleep sometimes, when I’m really not.”Now it was Rogue’s turn to feel her face heat up as it began to glow. She squeezed her eyes shut in embarrassment. “So you listen to me…”“Not too often,” Wanda assured her roommate, though her response had come a bit too quickly to wholly convince Rogue. “It’s just that I know how lonely and frustrated you are, so I wanted to let you blow off steam, and I’m sorry for listening and enjoying myself too, but I didn’t think you’d be comfortable doing that together with me, even if we just watched each other,” she rambled.Rogue opened her eyes to lock gazes with her roommate. “Wanda, Ah’m sorry,” she told the lesbian with all the sincerity she could muster. “Ah’m straight as an arrow. Ah crave sex somethin’ fierce, but only with fellas ‘n their dicks.” Her cheeks reddened further as she heard how blunt she was about her desires. The daughter of Magneto nodded sadly and folded her arms across her breasts. “It’s just so hard,” she sighed, her voice trembling, “to live with someone I have feelings for, but they aren’t returned.”Rogue snorted lightly. “Believe me, Ah know,” she retorted sourly. After a short, awkward pause, Wanda licked her lips. “I won’t blame you if you don’t want me as a roommate anymore,” she said, “if it’ll be too awkward now.”The Southern goth put a hand on her hip. “Now whah would Ah wanna kick you out?” she asked. “Other than our sexual preferences, we’re two peas in a pod: we got similar fashion sense, we got similar figures, and we got similar loneliness and frustration.” She favored her roommate with a tight smile. “Ah reckon as long as Ah don’t know you’re doin’ it, Ah don’t mahnd if ya get yer rocks off whahl Ah do.”“Thank you,” whispered Wanda, unable to meet her roomie’s eyes just then. “You forgot to list one other way we’re alike: the way others keep using us.” She sniffled, fresh tears following the previous ones’ trails to her chin, where they hung, glistening, for a fleeting moment before falling.“All the more reason fer us ta stick together,” Rogue replied, her eyes turning glassy, her heart growing heavy. If she could have embraced her roommate safely, she would have. The weeping woman wiped ineffectually at her face, trying to wipe away her tears but accomplishing nothing but smearing the droplets all over her cheeks. Finally, she could say, “Tell the others I’ll be back in a moment. I just need to dry off first.”Rogue smiled a thin smile and nodded. The two former Brotherhood girls parted ways, Wanda to the restroom and Rogue back to the slumber party. The Southerner returned to see some of the others yawning and stretching, while some were nursing fresh, usually caffeinated, drinks. She decided to pour herself a soda also.“Is Wanda okay?” asked Jean, who had been watching for their return.Waiting for the fizz to subside, Rogue nodded. “Ah reckon so,” she answered. “We just needed a little heart-ta-heart, and she had ta drah some tears. We’re both okay, though, and Wanda promised to come back."“Excellent!” Amara gushed. “We will continue when she returns. I am glad that I did not so thoroughly offend her that she would depart and refuse to return.”Danielle gazed sadly toward the door. “Poor girl,” she lamented. “I’ve never crossed paths with Mystique, fortunately, but the Professor and Storm have both warned me about her. I can’t imagine…”“Y’know what’s, like, really sad?” Kitty added. “Mystique totally ripped off some of her English ‘slang’ from a book series I read. Like, a series for tweens or whatever. How lame is that, for big, bad Mystique to steal material from tween fiction?” She rolled her eyes.“I guess it worked well enough,” commented Jubilee. “She sounded authentic enough to fool Rogue and Wanda.”Rogue sipped her drink. “Ah never could figure out whah she’d masquerade as mah friend,” she mused.“Maybe she wanted to get into your pants,” quipped Tabby. When Rogue just glared, Tabby grinned faux-innocently. “Too soon?”“What was yer first clue?”“Like, ohmygod!” Kitty blurted. Everyone turned to look at her in bewilderment. “I totally just thought of this: you two and Wanda, the three girls of the Brotherhood, all had someone trying to use your powers for their own purposes.”Tabby and Rogue both nodded thoughtfully. “I never thought about it that way,” replied the blonde. “It’s more fun to think about the other thing we have in common, though.” Rogue rolled her eyes in anticipation of Tabby’s elaboration: “Our big jugs!”“Geez, Tabby,” Rogue groaned, “would ya give it a rest? You’re the only one braggin’ about ‘em. Ah got half a mahnd ta say ya got work done.”The blonde bombshell rolled her eyes. “Bitch, please,” she replied, her tone carefully balanced between humor and venom. “These puppies are all-natural. What I don’t get is why you’re so sour about yours.”“Ah done told ya before,” grumbled Rogue, “they get in mah way. They been getting’ in mah way since fifth grade.”“Early bloomer,” griped Kitty. “And yeah, I’m totally jealous.”“It ain’t all it’s cracked up ta be,” her former roommate replied. “Ah needed a bra before some o’ mah classmates wore trainers, so Ah got glares from gals ‘n stares from fellas.” She sipped her drink, her gaze distant as memories flooded back to her. “The rumors ‘n nicknames about me flew, just ‘cuz Ah had the biggest tits in mah class: sperm dumpster, panty-dropper, Balloon Boobs, Trailer-Trash Tits, future porn star, future welfare queen, nigger-dick lover, rug-muncher.”Most of the girls recoiled at the shocking amount of bigotry on display in those nicknames. Rogue shook her head sadly and explained, “Welcome ta lahfe in the rural South. Mississippi’s the South’s armpit, proudly leading the whole dang country, or close to it, in such categories as teen pregnancy rates, STD’s, obesity, and poverty. It’s also got a real premium on stupidity.”Danielle covered her mouth. “That doesn’t sound too different from the reservation,” she observed, “if you substitute rampant alcoholism for obesity.” The Seneca girl tugged on one of her braids as her own memories threatened to appear before her eyes, and everyone else’s too. She managed to keep her powers under control for the moment.Tabby’s eyebrows knitted together as she looked at Rogue uncertainly. “I guess if I had that much negative attention,” she conceded, “I’d hate my body too.”Rogue half-snorted, half-chuckled ruefully. “When Aunt Ahrene suggested Ah cover up more ‘n avoid folks due to a ‘skin condition,’ Ah pounced all over it,” she revealed to the others. “That’s more ‘r less when mah wardrobe transformed into the look y’all know ‘n love.”“You mentioned this Aunt Irene was the only open lesbian in town,” Jean recalled. “I’m sure that didn’t help matters.”“Rumor mills suck,” groused Jubilee.Danielle regarded her with thoughtful, sad eyes. “Didn’t you have anyone to stick up for you?”Rogue shook her head. “The few friends Ah had all ditched me bah freshman year,” she answered. “They didn’t wanna rep fer hangin’ out with either a ‘ragin’ dahke’ or a ‘cock-fiend’; somehow Ah was both at the same tahm.” She laughed, bitterly, at the ridiculousness of it.Tabby shook her head. “I got called a lot of names too. You just gotta ignore that kind of bullshit,” she advised.“It’s not quite that easy,” objected Jubilee. She folded her arms and pursed her lips, fixing Tabby with a withering glare.“Aye, an’ how much o’ what the otherr lasses said about ye,” Rahne chimed in, “was trrue?”“Fair point,” the blonde conceded with a laugh. “But some of the ones about Rogue were true, too, if exaggerated. Like… like ‘porn star’ – you’re not that big.”Rogue flushed. She sipped her Coke, suddenly wishing Amara had provided something a little stronger to mix into it. “Actually…” she began, but trailed off; Rahne, with her keen ears, thought she heard Rogue mumble something more, ending with “Jenna Jameson.”“You’re not much bigger than me. Thirty-six-D?” Tabby guessed.“Trah ‘double’,” Rogue replied, staring at the lingering bubbles of carbon instead of looking at any of the other girls. “Or, if ya prefer, thirty-six-E, dependin’ on the store. Shoppin’ fer bras is a pain in the ass, so mostly Ah bahnd ‘em down with Ace bandages.” Frustration at the other girl’s persistence regarding this topic began to build.Tabby’s eyes narrowed as she studied Rogue’s frame. “I don’t buy it,” she decided. The sassy Southern girl set her drink on the table and stared down the blonde. “Ya want proof?” she threatened, pulling up the layered shirts by their hems, exposing her toned core.Tabby merely raised an eyebrow, refusing to back down. Rogue knew the other former Brotherhood member had called her bluff, so she steeled herself. Deep down, she knew she would regret this; she had no idea how much, though, until her shirts were pulled up around her armpits.“Everyone, I’m sorry for running out like that. I – oh!”Wanda would forever thank her ambient luck-manipulation for the sight she walked in on. For some reason unknown to her, Rogue was giving Tabby an eyeful – or maybe two. Despite her best efforts, the Scarlet Witch could do nothing but stare, wondering when her eyes might bulge and fall from her face, like in the cartoons.Rogue froze. Growing up in rural Mississippi, she had seen deer stare, petrified, at oncoming vehicles; so she knew better than most how true the phrase “like a deer in headlights” was. She also knew that, at that particular moment, those deer had absolutely nothing on her.Wanda licked her lips. Because she had no desire to break the spell, she said nothing. Her cheeks burned as she admired how Rogue’s huge, pale, magnificent breasts, crowned with pale-pink nipples, hung so perfectly from her frame. Wanda could also just make out Rogue’s well-defined abs.It was Jubilee who spoiled the moment by breaking the silence: “Hey, Wanda, welcome back.” In a flash Rogue pulled her shirts back down into place. The Scarlet Witch, her face matching her nightgown, returned to her seat. Neither of the roommates would look at each other.“I wanted to ask you something,” the Californian continued, plowing ahead to defuse the awkward ambience now permeating the room. “Your story… well, to be honest, this surprised me… it got me, um… kinda hot,” she stammered. “I was wondering, um, if you’d like to maybe help me sometime… y’know… figure out if I’m bi?”Surprised, Wanda regarded her carefully, as though she were unsure how exactly to react. “You’re serious?”Jubilee shrugged and answered, “More like curious. And anxious to reawaken my libido, since the last time I got wet was during my first time. So no promises.”Wanda smiled, surprise still painting her features. “I suppose we can discuss it more after the party’s over,” she suggested. Jubilee nodded, glancing nervously at the other girls.Fortunately for her, most of them were still too shell-shocked by Rogue’s impromptu show to react to the potential new relationship. One exception, though, was Kitty, who could hardly contain her grin. “I bet you two will make a totally cute couple!” Rahne nodded in eager agreement, also grinning. For her part, Amara again wore her practiced smile, though it could not quite fully mask her discomfort. “I… wish you both the best,” she offered diplomatically. “We are glad that you have returned, Wanda,” the hostess assured her, more genuinely.“Taem ferr anotherr storry!” Rahne crowed. “RRogue’s th’ only lass yet t’ go, nay?”The princess nodded. “Indeed – though, given her… shall we say… ‘unique’ circumstances, she may elect to share instead how she imagines her first time might proceed.”“Ach, buggerr that,” Rahne scoffed, wrinkling her nose. “Ye should sharre about yerr firrst taem wankin’ – fingerrs orr toys!”Tabby snickered. “As long as it doesn’t start, ‘This one time, at band camp’,” she quipped.Eyes rolling once more because of Tabby, Rogue replied, “Don’t worry. Ah was never in marchin’ band; Ah was too much of an outcast, too much a ‘loser’ even fer that bunch.” She shook her head wryly.“I don’t get it,” whispered Danielle, looking lost, to her roommate.“I’ll, like, explain later,” promised Kitty with a giggle.Jean fixed Rogue with a penetrating gaze. “You’ve been wanting to tell us this for a long time, haven’t you?” asked the telepath pointedly.Reluctantly, Rogue nodded. “Haven’t Ah embarrassed mahself enough fer one naht?” she pleaded.“No way!” Kitty teased. “C’mon, Rogue, we’ve all told our stories.”“Many of them embarrassing,” added Jean.“Or painful,” murmured Jubilee. Danielle swallowed, seemingly the only one who heard her.The bustiest girl at the party pursed her lips. Her jade-green eyes swept the room, gauging the others’ expressions. She found them curious, even hopeful that she might open up to them; she found herself touched by the camaraderie she felt among them. Slowly, she nodded.“Y’all been honest with me. Ah reckon Ah should come clean about a few things too,” Rogue told them as she sat in her chair. “Fer starters, mah name – mah legal name – is Anne-Marie Adler. Aunt Ahrene said she never knew mah parents’ last name, since her sister, mah mama, up ‘n vanished after leavin’ me on Aunt Ahrene’s doorstep ta run off with mah pa.”Each word was a struggle for her, visibly so; the other girls scooted closer in a show of support. “Leastways,” Rogue continued with a sniffle, “that’s what she told me. Ah later found out, o’ course, that Mystique was mah mama.”Several of the other girls, those in the know, nodded gravely. Danielle covered her mouth and shook her head, her eyes wide. “Ah didn’t know it back then, but she did visit every now ‘n again, wearin’ different faces. Most tahms, she only came fer some nookie with the woman who actually raised me,” she added sourly. Wanda shuddered.“At least we, like, know your real name now,” Kitty supplied helpfully, “even if ‘Anne’ is kinda lame.”“Anne of Mutant Gables,” Jean quipped with a warm smile.“Y’all, it’s ‘Anne-Marie’,” Rogue corrected, “with a hahphen. Ah ain’t used that name since… since mah powers activated.”“For the benefit of those who weren’t there,” Jean jumped in before anyone – namely, Jubilee or Tabby – could complain, “she was at a party. A boy named Cody asked her to dance. His friend jostled him into her and knocked her down; when he tried to help her up, he touched her arm.” Most of the girls winced, having experienced Rogue’s draining touch at some point.“I know that name,” Wanda said. “She moans it sometimes in her sleep.”Rogue pulled her feet into the chair, resting her chin on her knees. “That’s what Ah told y’all,” she confessed, “after Ah joined the X-Men. At the tahm, the truth was still too painful.”“It was, like, a rough night for all of us,” Kitty soothed.Jean tilted her head to make eye contact with Rogue. “Please,” she encouraged with a sad smile, “tell us. It could help you finally come to terms with… yourself.” Though she would never admit it to anyone, the telepath was fishing in this case, since she could rarely read her friend’s thoroughly-jumbled psyche in any detail, relying instead on the general empathic impressions that she could detect from Rogue – in this case, a strong sense of self-loathing.“At the tahm, Ah didn’t want y’all ta know,” the goth girl began slowly, as if building her courage with each word, “that mah powers activated… whahl Ah was havin’ sex with Cody.” Cheeks glowing, she glanced at Jean and Kitty and added, “Ah didn’t want mah new friends ta think Ah was a slut or anything, not after bein’ called one fer so long.”“Ohmygod,” Kitty breathed. “Does that mean – ?”Rogue nodded, silencing her. Awed silence descended as the others, one by one, worked out the implications of what had gone unsaid. The Mississippi native breathed deeply and opened up about herself for the first time._____________________________________________________________
A/N: I hope everyone enjoyed this chapter. If it came as a surprise to you, since I'm in "sporadic update mode," rest assured you're in good company! I didn't think I'd get this chapter done before Christmas, honestly; but the Muse has had me wrapped around her little finger for the better part of this month - this chapter, another fic finished and posted in the Anime subdomain (see my profile for it), and some short stories written for a Halloween party's contest. (That's how lit majors have fun - story contests! :D )
I wanted to clarify that I added the "Contro" tag due to the bigoted nature of some of the nicknames/rumors about Rogue. Such attitudes and behaviors disgust me. Sadly, such attitudes and behaviors persist in the more isolated and rural areas where "us vs. them" mentalities seem to flourish.
Speaking of rural areas, I did rewatch "Rogue Recruit," Rogue's intro episode; and it struck me that Irene's house and neighborhood were a lot more "suburban middle class" than I'd remembered (likewise for Cody's house). I'll see if I can work the trailer-park element of American Southern life into Rogue's story without retconning too much. Fair warning, though, that I reserve the right to do a little retcon if I need to.
Regarding Evo's overall timeline, I'll be treating Season 1 as Rogue, Scott, and Jean's junior year of HS; S2 and 3 as their senior year; and S4 as their first semester post-HS, with Jean and Scott taking online courses and relying on their AP credits to ensure they don't fall behind.
Anyhow, my next update may well be December, once the semester's over; if the next chapter gets written sooner, I'll post it sooner, of course. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to give me feedback on this story via rating, review, or joining the discussion thread (link available in Ch.1 A/N).
