Kurt paused in the doorway, his brows creeping slightly upwards as Kitty muttered her goodbyes into the phone and hung it up almost reverently, a deep sigh escaping her lips before she turned to see him standing there, watching. “Oh!” Her cheeks bloomed pink as she took in his mildly interested expression at odds with the tense posture of his body. “Um, sorry. Did you need the phone? I didn’t think I was going to take so long…” She curled her fingers around the edge of the desk behind her, feeling the sudden need to hold onto something solid and unmoving. I refuse to be nervous around Kurt, she thought. I didn’t do anything wrong and he’s not going to hurt me. He’s Kurt, for crying out loud!
“Didn’t mean to interrupt,” he said after a hesitation. “It’s Katya’s birthday and I wanted to try and call her before it gets too late in Germany.” He smiled faintly, the tips of his fangs showing through the holographic features covering his true form. “She’s apparently got a date.”
“She does?” Kitty heard the surprise in her own voice and could not help it. “I always thought your parents would be too protective to let her date before… I dunno… thirty!” She relaxed her grip on the desk and smiled at Kurt’s bark of laughter. Normal, she thought defiantly. We can be normal people having a normal conversation, nothing about Peter or us or anything…
“Kitty,” he began, but stopped, lips parted on a word that would not come. Instead, he smiled, his pent-up breath leaving his lungs in a soft rush. “You think this documentary thing is going to fly?”
She shrugged, seeming to give it consideration as she edged out of his way, giving him access to the phone. Idly, her fingers crept up to play with her pony tail as she answered. “I think it’s a good idea in it’s essence,” she began, frowning slightly. “But I think it’s dangerous. I mean… you know how we are about using our powers without even thinking about it… What’s going to happen the first time I forget and phase through the floor or you teleport? Or Jubilee finally paffs Remy to bits?” She shook her head and sighed again. “Well, I’m keeping you from your call. Tell her I said happy birthday and tell your folks I said hi!” Kitty smiled brightly and started past him, stopping suddenly when his fingers closed on her arm. She gasped mildly, the familiar yet surprising feeling of his strong, warm fingers on her flesh making her stomach roil in momentary uncertainty. I don’t owe either of them an explanation…
He did not look at her, but rather at some spot on the wall in front of him, his eyes wide and fixed, like he could not bear to see her. “Katzchen, I do love you,” he murmured sotto voce. “And I miss you. But more than any of that I want you to be happy. I want you to have a good life on whatever path you choose…” He squeezed her arm tightly for just one second then released her, crossing to the phone in two long strides.
Kitty blinked, the warm places left on her skin by his fingers fading rapidly but burned into her sensory memory. She knew what those hands felt like everywhere on her body. And she hated herself, for just a moment, for reducing everything to sexual experience. She turned, not sure what she was going to say, and found Kurt already dialing, his head bent over the phone as if he needed to see the numbers more clearly. “Don’t forget we’re visiting the Professor at three,” she finally settled on saying. He nodded in return, and she let herself out in the usual way, no phasing allowed, she reminded herself.
“Kitty Pryde, right?” an unfamiliar, perky voice asked.
She followed the voice to it’s source—a young man, barely older than she, standing at the foot of the stairs to her left. “Um, yeah. Why?” She felt her expression grow suspicious, her brows drawing together and her lips pressing into a thin line. It was what Jubilee referred to as her “don’t fuck with me” face, and that memory made Kitty smile inwardly, glad that she even had such an expression in her repertoire.
“My name’s Jacob,” he offered, scurrying forward, his glasses slipping down his nose as he stuck out his hand for her to accept. Shaking her hand fervently, he added, “I’m one of the documentary crew. I do the sound stuff.”
Kitty smiled politely. “I’m sure your family is very proud. Pardon me but I’ve got to take care of some things before I head out…” She released his hand and tried to edge past him, but he slipped in front of her, never lifting his feet from the marble floor. “Um, can I help you with something?” Tiny danger bells were going off in her brain and she started making mental note of her options. Kurt’s just behind me—all I have to do is scream. The front door is unlocked and just six feet away, Logan is around and he’ll hear me if I scream. And if I absolutely have to, I can phase… She kept her polite smile plastered to her face but even she knew it looked forced, pained even.
“Uh, I was just wondering,” Jacob stuttered, blushing slightly, “if you’d mind sitting for another interview. See, you’re the first one from the Institute to go to college and we want to talk to you about your experiences…”
“We do?” she asked archly, rocking back on her heels. “Got a mouse in your pocket or will this be a team interview?”
Jacob rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “It’ll just be me, actually,” he half-muttered, half rushed. “If that’s okay.”
Kitty bit her lower lip in thought, weighing the options. “Okay,” she said after a moment. “I can do it around two thirty, if that’s okay with you. I have an appointment to keep at three but half an hour should be enough, right?”
“Actually,” he said sharply, his voice no longer uncertain, his eyes bright, “I was kind of hoping we could do it right now. It’ll only be a few minutes and the library is free…” He reached out and took her elbow, starting to guide her towards Mark’s domain. “Please?”
Kitty wavered, then shrugged. “Fine, ten minutes.” She tamped down the niggle of worry in her belly. Just get it over with and you can finish making your calls and get THAT done with too…
