Chapter 15
Over the next several days Loki is rarely away from Shelia. He spends hours upon hours talking to her and reading to her. Frigga comes by daily to change the dressing on Shelia's wounds until they close. She also spends time keeping Loki company while he maintains his vigil at Shelia's side.
"Lunch will be here soon, go ahead and bathe and I will look after her," she tells her son.
Loki goes without arguing. He has this conversation with Frigga everyday and knows there is no point. As he strips off his tunic he hears screaming from the other room. It's incoherent and terrified. He runs back in the bedroom to see Shelia crouched up close to the top of the bed, trying frantically to get away from Frigga as she attempts to calm her down.
"Loki!" Shelia screams with relief when she sees him. "What's going on? Where am I?" She asks as she starts to cry. She crumbles in to a heap on the bed as he reaches out for her and pulls her to him. Holding her tight he begins to stroke her hair.
"It's ok. I'm here. You're ok. Everything is fine." He looks to Frigga, "Have Thor get Dr. Banner." She simply nods her head and hurries out of the room closing the door behind her.
"What's going on?" Shelia sobs into his shoulder.
"Do you remember what happened at the house? With Sean?" he probes.
"Sean? No! What did he do?" She panics looking down at herself and seeing the IV in her arm for the first time.
"Nothing, its ok. He tried to start some trouble, but its all fine now. You're here with me and you are safe," he says trying to calm her, pulling her back into an embrace.
"Then why can't I remember what happened and why am I hooked up to this?" She says lifting her arm to indicate the IV. "And where are we?"
"Shhhhh….I'll explain everything. I promise."
There is a knock at the door and Frigga pushes it open slightly, "Is it ok to come in?"
"Yes mother. Please come in," Loki answers as he releases Shelia from his grip.
Tentativly Frigga approaches the bed. "Shelia, this is my mother Frigga, Queen of Asgard," Loki tells Shelia.
"Your mother? Are you telling me we are on Asgard? Loki please, just tell me what is going on," she begs.
Sighing he looks to his mother for guidance. Frigga gives him a small smile and answers for him. "Sweatheart, you were injured on Midgard and Loki brought you here to protect you and let you heal. Dr. Banner has been seeing to your care and he will be here soon to do a full exam now that you are awake."
"Awake? How long was I out? I don't feel injured," Shelia states.
"A couple of weeks. You had very grave injuries, but they seem to have healed, Dr. Banner will run some tests and let us know for sure," Frigga explains.
"A couple of weeks? What about my job? My house? King?" She covers her mouth with her hand and begins to sob as she starts to remember details. "Oh god, King…..my baby. He killed King."
"I'm so sorry," Loki tells her pulling her back into his arms.
"He shot me!" She says as she grabs at her abdomen. "Wait. How am I not…Loki I don't understand. I remember him shooting me. Didn't he?" She asks suddenly unsure.
"Yes, he did. That's why you were brought here to heal," Loki explains.
"But how did I heal in such a short time?" she pushes.
"That's probably enough for now. Why don't we wait until Dr. Banner looks you over and then Loki can fill you in on everything. You should rest now, you don't want to overdo it," Frigga tells her then looks to Loki, "I will go inform the Allfather that she has awakened. Once Dr. Banner clears her, the King will need to render his decision."
"Decision about what?" Shelia asks Loki.
"My punishment for coming back while banished."
"But you brought me here to help me. How can they punish you for that?"
"I disobeyed the Allfather. I will have to face the consequences," he tells Shelia. Looking to Frigga as she is leaving, he says, "tell father I will await his summons."
In the silence that follows Shelia curls up on the bed next to Loki, he responds by lying next to her and pulling her close. This is how Dr. Banner finds them when he arrives.
"Hello, I am Dr. Banner," he says in introduction to Shelia. "I just need to run some tests to see how you're healing. Is that ok?"
"Of course," she answers.
He starts by running a full body scan and checking her brain activity. Then he takes some blood samples to have analyzed. "How are you feeling? Any pain?"
"I feel fine, a little hungry," she answers.
"That's to be expected. I think we can go ahead and remove this IV," he says as he prepares the supplies he needs. "Your scans all look good. Your body has healed remarkably well. I suggest you take it easy for a few days and stick to a bland diet for a week or so. Otherwise it looks like you have a clean bill of health, pending the results of your blood work."
"Thank you Doctor," Shelia tells him as he is packing up his equipment.
Loki has been quiet through the entire exam. He is happy that Shelia is healthy, but knows that means he will have to face Odin's judgement and may be separated from her.
There is a knock at the door and Frigga enters with Thor. "Loki, Odin has summoned you and Dr. Banner to the throne room. I will stay with Shelia."
Loki looks to his mother and nods his head in resignation. He knows he must face Odin. Turning to Shelia, he can tell she is getting upset, "I'll be back as soon as I can," he says as he walks out with Thor and Dr. Banner trailing behind. Frigga takes a seat in the chair next to the bed.
Shelia looks at her expectantly, "What's going to happen to Loki?"
"I am not privy to the Kings decisions. I know he will question Dr Banner and Loki himself before making a pronouncement."
"I just don't think he should be punished for bringing me here. He was only trying to save me. I don't even know how we got here since he has no magic right now."
"You came through a portal," Frigga answers.
"But where did the portal come from? Someone must have opened it," Shelia questions the Queen.
"I asked Heimdall to open it. Thor alerted me that something was wrong and so I was watching in the observatory with the gatekeeper. I knew you would die if nothing was done and I couldn't let that happen to Loki," Frigga confesses.
"I don't understand. Couldn't let what happen to Loki?" Shelia asks.
Instead of answering the question directly, Frigga asks, "How well do you know my son?"
"Pretty well I think. We lived together for months. We talked all the time."
"So you feel close to him?"
"Well yeah. Of course."
"How close?"
"What are you asking me?" Shelia asks confused by all these questions.
"Only that you consider your feelings for him."
"I know what my feelings for him are," Shelia snaps.
"I see," is the older woman’s only answer.
With a sigh Shelia continues, "I'm sorry. I'm just frustrated. For the first time in my life I finally find a guy who treats me right and takes care of me and makes me happy and he is a criminal on a galatic scale and worse, he shows no interest in me at all! We slept in the same bed for months and nothing!"
"So because he didn't try anything with you while you were vulnerable you assume he isn't interested? But isn't that precisely why you like him?" Frigga challenges.
"Well yeah, but.... I mean... He could have....arrghhh! Why does everything have to be so complicated?"
"Simply letting him know how you feel could go a long way towards helping that," the queen responds.
"But what if he is punished again? How fair would it be to tell him how I feel and then not be able to see him."
"How fair would it be for him to never know he is loved? You must know, the punishment for returning could be death," Frigga counters.
Shelia sits in stunned silence for a moment. Unable to meet Frigga’s gaze.
"Why don't you go bathe and I will leave you something clean to wear. Loki will be back soon and I'm sure you have much to discuss," Frigga directs.
"Yes, thank you," Shelia responds as she heads in to the bathroom.
