Two months later marked the beginning of summer vacation, although with the weather pattern you’d swear it was still Spring. Regardless Elizabeth and Nate had felt they should take advantage of the long school break and sent Kiara to stay at the manor for a few weeks. Currently she was in the living room, next to the resident electricity manipulator. Zac had a grape sucker in his mouth as the cut scene ended on the video game and began strategically pounding the keys. Kiara sat and watche quietly.
After a few more minutes Zac broke the silence, “S’up?”
“Nothing,” Kiara replied, her voice held sadness to it.
Zac paused the game and sat the controller down, turnin’ to face Kiara. Upon removing the sucker from his mouth he answered with, “my ass. You’re never this quiet.”
“It’s just…. I don’t… I can’t talk about it,” Kiara replied, fumbling over her word, her arms were wrapped around her body. It looked as if she was trying to hug herself, as though the girl infront of him, normally tough and carefree, was about to shatter into a million pieces at any moment.
Zac raised both eyebrows at the answer, and watched Kiara’s facial expression. He returned the sucker to his mouth, then leaned back against the pillows and arm rest of the couch. He brought his legs up onto the seat cushion just in front of Kiara. He fidgeted, positioning himself until he was comfortable, half laying on the sofa then nodded to the blonde haired girl while calling to her, “get over here.”
Kiara gave him an inquisitive expression in response.
“Don’t just stare at me, woman. Get over here,” Zac repeated, opening his arms out to Kiara. Kiara hesitated before shifting and letting herself fall into Zac’s arms. He wrapped his arms around her tightly.
“I’m the last person you gotta worry about passing judgement on you or anyone else. The heck can I judge? I’m a transgender mutant and a recovering drug addict. Those are three things I’m always gonna be. I don’t know what happened… but I know you’re upset. I’m here, okay? Just do go doin’ somethin’ stupid,” Zac said, as he moved a few blonde strands behind Kiara’s ear. Kiara nodded a bit and nuzzled into Zac’s neck. He gently rubbed the middle of her back a little at her nuzzling. Her breath began coming out in slightly shorter huffs of warmth that hit his skin, causing some goosebumps to form.
‘Geez, sometimes I hate my body for more than one reason,’ Zac thought to himself, silently hoping she wouldn’t notice the multiple spots of raised flesh on his arms.
“Zac?”
“Hmm?”
“I… my parents are getting divorced. My Dad’s gay…. And he has a boyfriend. My mom isn’t upset about it…. I don’t know why,” Kiara admitted in a whisper, her voice cracking near the end.
Zac cuddled Kiara a bit closer to himself while he thought. Then slowly answered, “try to imagine if you wanted to eat an orange but someone told you, ‘oranges are poison’ and handed you an apple. You eat every apple you can find but you still want an orange. You decide to sneak one. You find out that oranges aren’t poison, and you like them better than apples. That’s what oppressed homosexuals go through. Some marry and have kids before they end up giving things a shot with the same sex. It doesn’t mean they don’t love their kids, or that they don’t in some way love the person they married… it’s just that the person they married is an apple and they like oranges better… and they’ll always crave oranges but they can live without apples.”
Kiara blinked and nodded a bit, “I guess that makes sense. I mean… my Dad’s an only child so…”
“So his parents probably pressured him to procreate. A lot of parents do that. They think it’s in their child’s best interest, but truth is it’s selfish… because they’re really just concerned with passing on their genetics. There’s so many kids in this world… orphans, that have no one. They’d be thrilled to just have one parent, two would be like winning the lottery and publishing a best seller in the same day to them. Just astounding excitement… kids don’t care what gender their parents are as long as their needs are met. It’s society and tradition that’s built this idea of ‘one mom and one dad’. So many kids get raised by single moms, some by single dads… and they’re just as well adjusted as anyone else if the parent can provide the same love and attention they’d get if they were in a traditional household…. And some single parents can do that,” Zac continued.
“I know Dad stayed home with Cal and I when we were babies… it was easier for him to since he generally worked from home anyway… Mom took a month off each time and then went back to work,” Kiara admitted.
Zac nodded, “Sounds like he was in it to a parent to both of you… No matter what.”
Kiara nodded against his chest, shifting her head so she could listen to his heartbeat. After another brief silence she asked another question, “Think you’d ever want kids, Zac?”
Zac blinked a bit and sighed a little, “That’s a loaded question, actually. I don’t know. I mean I like kids... but I don’t know if I’m the type of person that should raise them. Shit… I’m fifteen years old, I swear like a trucker, I smoke, I’ve been addicted to Rave and Cocaine. I’m not a virgin… and there’s been more than one. I don’t even want to count. I gamble, I’ve stolen, I’m just not a good person. I definitely wouldn’t be able to have biological kids.”
“’Not a good person,’” Kiara repeated with a scoff, raising her head to look Zac in the eye.
“You had your bad spell, sure. Show me someone that’s never had dark days and I’ll show you someone that’s bubble wrapped. We all go through destructive phases of some sort… I mean I’ve… I’ve neglected my diabetes before… badly enough that I wound up in hospital with I don’t know how many IV’s and tubes going in and outta me. I’ve damaged my kidneys from doing that… but… I learned not to. It isn’t worth it. I think you learned that too… sometimes the easiest things to learn are the things with the longest lessons,” She concluded.
Zac gave Kiara a bewildered look, “Geez…. 13 going on 30 with that kinda wisdom.”
Kiara giggled, “did you forget who my parents are? Mom always tries to see the good in a bad situation.”
“Yeah, I guess so,” Zac answered.
Kiara bit her lip a little, avoiding Zac’s eyes for a moment before laying her head back down on his chest.
Zac raised a brow and hugged Kiara, “What was that about?”
“I just wanna cuddle more,” Kiara replied.
‘Yeah, sure… but I ain’t gonna push it,’ Zac thought to himself as he rested his chin on the top of Kiara’s head.
“Zac?”
“Hmm?”
“Are you attracted to guys or girls?” Kiara asked.
“Girls,” Zac answered with a slight blush.
“But then… how are you not a virgin?” Kiara asked.
Zac chuckled a bit, feeling a blush fully covering his cheeks, “Umm… let’s just keep it at ‘there’s ways’, for now… least until we get to a room that’s a bit more secluded.”
“But you are okay with telling me?” Kiara asked, still not looking at Zac. He could feel the heat of her own blush through his shirt and binder.
“Yeah… and either you’re suddenly spiking a fever or…”
“Oh shut up,” Kiara groaned, playfully smacking his stomach, which caused him to flinch and curl his legs into his stomach a little.
“Hey!”
“Well you asked for it,” Kiara defended.
“Geez, I can’t tease you without getting’ hit?” Zac asked with a small laugh.
Kiara’s face softened a bit and she sighed before inquiring, “Did I hurt you?”
“No. You hit like a pansy girl,” Zac joked.
Kiara’s jaw dropped before her hand balled into a fist and she went to slug his shoulder. Zac caught her fist in his palm and moved her arm off to the side away from his body, causing her to nearly fall off the couch. He let go of her fist and caught her with the same arm, his eyes locking on hers for a moment before letting her dangle a bit.
Zac smiled as he teasingly asked, “Ya gonna keep tryin’?”
“You so deserve worse,” Kiara groaned out.
“Oh I do huh?” Zac asked, shifting so his body pinned Kiara’s lower half onto the couch.
“Zac… come on I can hear the blood rushing up to my head,” Kiara complained.
“Ahhh, you’re too easy,” Zac whined as he pulled Kiara up so she was sitting up underneath him, he was on his knees above her. Kiara blushed a little when her leg brushed up against his.
Zac leaned in close to her ear and whispered, “it ain’t real.. no sweat. Even if I was attracted to ya, it wouldn’t do anything.”
“Then why do you have it?” Kiara asked in a whisper.
“So I can use urinals in public,” Zac answered, truthfully.
“I don’t think I’ll tell you how I had sex with those girls… not yet,” Zac continued to whisper.
Kiara pouted and whined out, “Why not?”
Zac didn’t answer but leaned into Kiara’s neck, he hovered for a moment before putting his lips to her skin. His cheeks puffed out as he blew a raspberry against her neck.
Kiara screamed at the action and jerked her knee up, causing Zac to roar with laughter, “Nothin’ there to hurt me with, woman.”
“You jerk!” Kiara exclaimed.
Zac just gave a smug smirk as he moved off of Kiara and headed out of the living room.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m gonna have a smoke,” Zac called over his shoulder.
Kiara rolled her eyes as she stood up and straightened her shirt before following him into the hallway. Zac stuffed his hands into his jeans pockets as he walked and looked over to Kiara.
“Sure ya wanna tag along? Rain means nothing, I still gotta smoke outside,” Zac pointed out.
“So I’ll stand with you under the Ramada,” Kiara replied.
Zac smirked a bit, “Why? Got a crush on me?”
“No!” Kiara exclaimed.
Zac shot another smug smile to Kiara, “You’re not very convincing.”
Kiara blinked a bit.
“First those questions and now this?” Zac pushed.
“Hey, I’m curious…. And I’m a teenager. As for following you, I just… I don’t wanna be alone but… being around Cal right now, is kinda weird,” Kiara replied, looking down at her sandals.
Zac cocked his head to the side as he held the door to the backyard open for Kiara, “Why ‘weird’?”
“It just… is. I mean… he’s grown and changed a bit since we last hung out and so have I… it’s just.. a little awkward,” she admitted as she stepped outside.
“Fine, we can chill while I indulge my craving,” Zac replied with a mock defeated tone.
“Thanks,” Kiara responded as she stepped outside.
“Don’t mention it,” Zac quipped as he followed Kiara out of the mansion.
‘Really… the pleasure’s all mine… or it is?’ Zac thought to himself as he let the door close behind himself. He pulled out a package of Next cigarettes, and took one out, he held it in his mouth and took the lighter from the same package, flicking it and gaining a small flame. He brought the flame to the tip of the cigarette and inhaled a little as it lit.
Kiara watched Zac, with a sense of fascination.
Zac eyed Kiara once he realized he was being watched, “Like the sight?”
Kiara shrugged, “You look cool when you smoke.”
Zac chuckled, the smoke exiting through his nasal passages, “Got a thing for bad boys it’d seem.”
“Oh stuff it,” Kiara retorted.
“Sure babe, just tell me when,” Zac joked.
“Ah!! I swear, Zachary Thompson!”
Zac couldn’t help but chuckle at how flustered she quickly became, and took another drag of his cigarette.
“Seriously though… it’s a nasty, disgusting, smelly habit… you should never start,” Zac admitted, looking at his cigarette.
“Then why do you keep it up?” Kiara asked.
“I like the taste… the calm I get from it… and if I didn’t smoke, I’d probably do worse things. Like go back to Rave and Coke,” Zac confessed.
“Umm… Zac?” Kiara asked.
“Hmm?” Zac asked in mid drag.
“Is this secluded enough?” Kiara asked, glancing around.
Zac choked on his puff, the smoke in his lungs exiting in the midst of hacking coughs.
“Well that was outta left field,” Zac commented taking another drag once the coughing had subsided.
He studied the cigarette, rolling it between his fingers before exhaling deeply, “my prosthetic isn’t just used for urination… I can use it for penetration and I have. It’s not something I’m proud of. I was always high or drunk… I just… like I said before, it was a bad time for me.”
Kiara bit her lip a little, “How long has it been?”
“Fourteen months, one week and three days,” Zac replied.
The blue eyed girl with curly golden locks nodded slowly, shifting a little, “You miss it?”
“No. I’ve had sex… but that’s all it is. Just soulless, meaningless…. It’s nothing. Now I’m saving it… for a time when it’ll be more than that… and hopefully… it’ll be with the real thing,” Zac answered, looking directly at Kiara.
Kiara smiled and nodded, “I can’t imagine giving it up without some kind of meaning.”
Zac smiled and nodded, “Yeah… it’s different for girls though. You’re supposed to hold out til you’re in a relationship. Guys? We’re supposed to be sluts… fuck everything that breathes and gets us going. I am a guy, even if not biologically… but I guess that’s one part where I fall short. I just don’t see the fuckin’ point. Sure ya get off… big deal I can do that myself. You get someone else off at the sametime … that’s kinda cool. But it’s… like so what? I think it’d be better if I had a girlfriend I was into before I try that stuff out again.”
“Got anyone in mind?” Kiara asked.
“Maybe. I got a rule though. She’s gotta be at least fourteen… so I won’t be going on dates anytime soon,” Zac replied, non-chalantly, as he let the cigarette drop and he crushed it out with his foot.
“Why fourteen?” Kiara asked.
Zac smiled and shrugged, “cause she’d have a bit of a sense of who she is before we start dating at that point… even slightly. That’s better than none.”
Kiara’s brows knitted together in slight confusion, “You mean because you’re not physically male?”
Zac glanced down at the ground and nodded, “Yeah. Thing about being trans is… if your partner finds out and they’re not at least somewhat sure of themselves, subconsciously, it can kinda mess with their head. I’ve had that happen… a sexual partner found out that I’m not a male-born man and she began freaking out… wondering if she was a lesbian. That kinda stung. I mean unless ya get close to me you can’t really tell. I talk n act like a dude. I am a dude… but she couldn’t see past what was between my legs or as she found out, on my chest.”
He rubbed the back of his neck a little towards the end.
He blinked when he felt arms wrap around him and a body pressing into his back.
“That had to be painful,” Kiara remarked, resting her head against Zac’s back.
“Kinda… but it’s pain that helps you grow,” Zac replied, resting his hand over Kiara’s.
“You really are my bestfriend, Zac,” Kiara admitted.
“I know. Back at ya, woman,” he answered.
"So question, if women are apples, and men are oranges... are you an applepear?" Kiara asked.
"What?! You blonde, that doesn't even follow the analogy," Zac teased.
"If anything I'm a blood orange," He laughed, relief settling over him as Kiara joined in.
