Storm opened one eye and exhaled slowly. She could not get into a meditative headspace and she knew as well as anything that, the harder she tried the worse it would be as far as trying to relax. Fluidly, she rose to her feet and twisted her hair back off the nape of her neck, tucking the loose ends into a messy bun. She was agitated, to be sure, but she refused to show it any more than she absolutely had to, whatever she could not hide beneath gestures and artifice. “Remember to breathe,” she intoned calmly, picking her way carefully between the rows of students in her meditation class. Purely ecumenical, the Professor had asked her to teach some basic techniques to some of the newer students who had difficulties with their powers or even with just being functional in conversation, hoping to harness some of the teenaged energy that seemed to be pouring off of them in angry waves. Someone giggled in the back row and Storm raised a brow. “Release your daily concerns, release your anger and all the things that tie you to your conscious state…” She stopped next to the giggler and nudged their knee with the toe of her slipper. “If you are having difficulty releasing a feeling or image, focus on it. Examine it. Why do you feel that way? Why are you thinking of this?” The giggler grew very still and straightened her spine, her lips pursing in overt concentration. Storm waited a second longer and continued her winding path between the students. It felt as if a thousand bees were buzzing in her skull, her thoughts were so disjointed and irritating, the thread of her lesson being the only coherent thing going through her mind. A quick glance at the clock showed her just a few minutes left in the session and she breathed a sigh of relief. Her gaze caught a person in the doorway, half-hidden by shadows, and it took just a spare moment to recognize Mark. He seemed to be waiting for her, checking his watch as she made her way back towards the front of the room. “Okay, let your breathing return to normal and slowly open your eyes. Come to your awareness at your own pace, don’t rush this.” She rolled up her yoga mat and busied herself tucking it into the carrying case and replacing the blocks and rolled pillows used for students who could not quite execute the full movements to participate in class. “Same time tomorrow,” she announced as the students began trickling from the room, some more dazedly than others.
“I hope I didn’t cause you to cut class short,” Mark said as he edged into the room around the last of the departing teenagers.
“Oh, it was time to wrap things up. I really don’t think most of them are into it,” she sighed, shaking her head sadly. “Most of them seem to think that meditation is a waste of time.”
Mark shrugged nonchalantly and stopped just out of Storm’s comfort zone. “It’s a shame how intelligence does not come with the mutant gene.” He raised a brow at the weather goddess’s sudden, startled look. “Oh, I’m not THAT in the dark,” he chuckled, rocking back on his heels. “I was wondering if perhaps you could give me a hand with some research. I’m not feeling quite myself and need a second set of eyes to make sure I’m not missing anything…” He smiled hopefully, straightening his posture and trying to appear as librianish as possible.
Storm paused, lips parted on her unspoken response. After a breath, she asked, “I thought Jubilee usually helped you with your research, or Kitty…”
“Ah, the thing is, I can’t find them anywhere.” In truth, he had only exerted a minimal effort to find them. What he needed help with, he did not want either teenager to have to understand or deal with. “I believe they had dates.”
“Um,” Storm shouldered her bag and tucked the rolled up mat in it’s case under her arm. “A date? Are you sure?” That, she thought, should be interesting as neither one of them are seeing anyone right now…
“They might be showering or just not around,” he shrugged. “In any case, neither girl is available. I just need an hour of your time to help me go over some items…”
Storm wavered; something did not ring true and she could not quite put her finger on it. Mark’s voice seemed odd somehow, clipped instead of it’s usual smooth cadence. “Alright. I’ll meet you in the library in thirty minutes. I need to change out of these clothes,” she added, giving a half-sweeping gesture, indicating her yoga garb.
Mark nodded. “I appreciate your help.”
“What are we researching, by the bye?”
“Death camps,” he tossed over his shoulder as he headed the way of her students. “Bring a red pen and your reading glasses.”
