Emma
snapped her pocketbook shut with a defiant twist of her wrist. “Thank you, officer. I apologize for the inconvenience but I’ll
make sure to call you at this number if we have further problems.” She smiled charmingly as the police officer
made his departure, her red lips curved in a semblance of polite pleasure until
the patrol car disappeared around the curve in her driveway and was out of
sight. Then the smile fell and she
became the Ice Queen once again. “Who,”
she said calmly, in a tone which Sean now recognized as ‘angry as Hell’, “phoned
in a bomb threat?”
Sean frowned. “Maybe it was someone at the Institute. The librarian fellow, Mark, he called
earlier, remember?”
She nodded,
but her tone was not any less annoyed than a moment before. “Why would the Institute call in a bomb
threat for us?” she demanded. “It’s not
something anyone with a grain of sense would do, or do lightly.” She turned to face the loosely assembled
group of students that had found their way to the foyer when the police had
arrived. “If I find out one of you did
it, I will flay you alive.” She paused,
a brow arching. “Metaphorically.”
Paige
blinked. “I’m sure,” she murmured,
edging closer to her brother. “Maybe it
was just someone in town being stupid, you know? I mean, I remember Kitty saying how much b.s. they got for living at the
Institute while they were going to Bayville High so maybe some kid in town is
trying to make our lives suck because they wanna make
fun of us for living up here.” She ran
out of breath and chanced a weak smile. “Maybe?”
“No one in
town is aware that this place houses students.
At least they weren’t until now.
I’m sure this will turn up in the paper tomorrow.” Emma tapped her heel against the marble
floor, one red nail going to her lips as if she wanted to chew on it but
thought better. “Sean, take Jono and Sam
and search the grounds. Paige, call
Kitty and see if she can access our phones from the Institute. If not, she’s going to need to come here to
scour the records or tell one of us how to do it.” She turned to head towards her office, then paused. “Has anyone
been in the Danger Room since last night?”
“No…” Paige said after a lengthy pause. “No one scheduled to, anyway. There’s still some
bugs to work out, remember? Kitty said
she was gonna come down with Logan
in July and finalize the new sims. Until then we can only use it for basic stuff
so no one really goes in there unless it’s training time.” She shrugged.
“It’s kinda boring if all you can do is the
obstacle course thing and the basic stuff.
Like having demo games on your computer you can only play one level of.”
Emma sighed
softly, trying not to come across as bitchy but knowing it would ultimately be
futile. “Change of plans. Sean, go through the security tapes now. Send
Jono and Sam on parameter check. Paige,
come with me.”
“Where are
we going?” she yelped as Emma grabbed her wrist and pulled her along
behind.
“We get to
check the Danger Room,” Emma said, smiling sharply. “Do you happen to have a
will in place?”
“That,”
Paige complained, “isn’t funny!” Emma
had let go of her wrist as they cleared the hall. “Isn’t it illegal or something to put a kid
in danger?” She traipsed along behind
her guardian, nervous fear making her stomach burn acidly.
“Why is it,”
Emma mused, “ninety five percent of the time you complain that you want to be
treated as an adult, that you *are* an adult, then when we have troubles, you’re
suddenly a kid?” They reached the
elevator leading down to the Danger Room and Emma jabbed the ‘down’ button. “Hmmm?”
“Teenagers prerogative,”
Paige replied simply. “Now ask me if I
want to borrow the car and see what I say.”
Emma
snorted elegantly. “You have an
advantage over the others,” she said, changing tacks. “You can protect yourself from concussive
blasts.” She raised a brow and swept a
gaze over the teenager’s jeans-clad figure.
“You can do it with those on, right?”
Paige
blinked, taking a moment to decipher what Emma was implying. “Oh…OH! Um… Yeah, I just have to shuck the skin out of my clothes
afterwards…” She blushed slightly,
averting her eyes. “I don’t wanna do this naked.”
“Good. That,” Emma opined, “would be a bit too
Unitarian for my tastes.” The elevator
doors opened and the two mutants stepped out into the cool, white hallway. The large silver doors of the Danger Room,
modeled after the original, loomed before them.
“I must admit…I’m not really sure what we’re looking for here. If someone did plant a bomb, it could be in
the doors, the walls…”
Paige
swallowed hard. “You know, that ain’t
making this easy.” She nodded once, as
if assuring herself, and said to Emma, “Go check the control room
monitors. Kitty said they pop up a
warning if something is wrong and I guess if someone put a bomb in the works,
that’d make the system go wonky, right?
I mean, what with being squished in with the wires and stuff…”
“I’ve been
around you too long,” Emma muttered, heading for the control room. “I actually understood that.” She shut the door to the secure booth behind
her. It was a smaller version of the
original control area but it did it’s job well. The monitors glowed
blue in the room and Emma forewent the lights.
She could see well enough to tell that the readouts all looked
normal. “Okay,” she said into the
intercom, filling the hall outside with her voice. “It seems fine. Double check inside, to be sure.” The light signaling the door panel was being
activated blinked yellow in the corner of her vision and Emma sat down,
sighing. The room itself looked, from
her vantage point, fine. Nothing seemed
out of place but then, wondered, what *could* seem out of place in a big,
empty, mostly metal room? The doors
hissed open and she saw Paige step into the practice space, jumping slightly at
the metallic click behind her as she was automatically shut in. “Just take a look around,” Emma spoke into
the intercom again. “Don’t be long.”
Paige
nodded, moving further into the room. Her
skin itched—she was barely holding back the impulse to change, to shed her
frail skin and become something indestructible.
The room echoed her footsteps and she let out a covert sigh of relief as
she finished her circuit. “Looks fine!”
she called, giving the control booth window a thumbs-up. She pressed her hand against the panel to
open the door and felt her stomach sink.
That, she decided, was not fine.
Flesh colored ooze marred the edge of the panel, and the device itself
slipped under her touch. “Oh, fuck…” Her vision filled with a bright light and
pain seared her body, then everything went dark.
