Chapter 15

Kitty's fists were clenched tightly at her sides. He stared at her, unable to speak. She walked past him, paused a moment in the doorway of the living room then ran up the stairs. Kurt moved to follow her before movement caught his eye.
Jean, Scott, Bobby and Rogue sat silently around the coffee table where they'd apparently been playing cards. They stared at him openly and with matching expressions of shock. Kurt never spoke crudely. Suggestively from time to time, yes, but never crudely, and never to Kitty. Rogue got to her feet immediately and ran past him out the door, presumably to the room she shared with Kitty. The voice that spoke next was the one he least wanted to hear right now.
"You screwed the pooch royally with that, Wagner." Kurt turned to see Logan walking around the corner and into view. The man leaned against the wall and regarded him for a moment. Then, speaking loud enough for the trio in the living room to hear, he continued. "I'm sure anyone here who heard that conversation is old enough to respect Kitty's and your privacy on the matter and not gossip. So long as I don't hear about people givin' her trouble 'bout her personal life, I figure the friend you just lost is enough punishment, and I won't mess with you." He walked past Kurt, leaving him miraculously unscathed. Kurt glanced down at the front of his shwherwhere a drop of blood had slid down his chin and dripped onto the white cotton.
Kitty was causing Kurt more injuries in a few days than Amanda ever had. He felt emotionally blistered, and physically spent. The pain in his lip seemed to make him feel better for some reason. He didn't look into the living room again. He wiped his lip on the back of his hand and walked back to the room he shared with Cannonball. His roommate wouldn't return for almost another week, and he didn't bother to turn on the light. He just sprawled, fully clothed, onto the bed. When he heard a knock at his door a few minutes later, he wasn't surprised.
"Come in." He said stiffly through his re-injured lip. When the door opened, he saw Scott silhouetted in the light from the hallway.
"I brought you some ice for your lip." The former student said, walking toward the bed and tossing a plastic bag at Kurt, who caught it. "Unless you want to soak your head in it." He sat in a chair by the bed and turned on one of the small lamps that sat on the bedside table. "Wanna talk about it? Or are you too drunk?"
"Nein, mein Freund." He said.
"Do it anyway, Kurt." Scott said, with a slight edge to his voice. "I need to reassure Jean that you haven't been abducted by aliens and replaced with a pod person." When Kurt shook his head, he continued. "Logan might feel like he doesn't have to slice and dice you, but I think Rogue feels differently."
"Und Sie?" He asked, Glancing at Scott. The man's expression was always hard to read, owing to the constant presence of sunglasses or his visor.
"Me? I think there's got to be more to the story than what I just saw, because the Kurt I know would sooner cut off his own arm than hurt Kitty Pryde the way you just did."
"A lot of things happened while you guys were away." Kurt said, sitting up and placing the ice bag on his lip, wincing at the contact of cold on his ragged lip.
"To say the least." Scott said, nodding his head in the direction of the wall where there was a rust-colored stain marring the pale, blue paint. "Whose blood was that?" Kurt groaned inwardly. He hadn't been able to wash the mark off his wall, so he'd been intending to paint over it but his time had been spent with Kitty instead.
"Kitty's, I bit her shoulder." Kurt said, then, rather than let Scott jump to any conclusions, he explained about their session in the Danger Room and subsequent actions, leaving out only the most personal details. He told him about Logan's 'Discussion' with him in the showers and his initial lip injury. Scott looked surprised, to say the least. But he did wait till Kurt finished his story, including the part about the coffee shop. "Then I got drunk, came home, and proceeded to humiliate the woman who has always meant way more to me than I ever cared to admit."
"You could always appologize."
"I think we're beyond that. And anyway, I don't think she really wanted to be with me, so maybe it's better this way." At Scott's snort he looked the man straight in the shades. "You of all people should understand, Summers; making love to an Angel, only to be pushed back to earth, can't be done by a mere mortal." He shook his head. "Could you go back to being friends with Jean?" Scott tightened his lips for a moment, then rested his palm gently on Kurt's shoulder.
"Probably not, but I'd never be able to take it if she hated me."
"Hate I can handle. I've been dealing with that since I was a baby." Scott left Kurt to his brooding. He joined Jean back in the living room. Though their mental link, she'd 'heard' the whole conversation.
"Well?" He asked her, sliding to the floor beside her.
"He's in so much pain right now, I don't think he'll be able to deal with it." She answered.
