Chapter 14
Loki wakes up to the sound of someone knocking at his door. He glances at Shelia to make sure she is ok and then gets up and goes to the door. When he opens it Thor is standing there with Dr. Banner and Tony. "How is she doing?" Tony asks without preamble.
"Mother says her wound looks good, other than that there has been no change," Loki tells him.
"Alright, lets take a look shall we?" Dr. Banner says as he approaches the bed. He begins pulling items out of his bag and lining them up on the bedside table. "We'll run some scans and then compare them to the original set to see if there has been any improvement. I'll also draw some blood for lab work and get her set up on some fluids."
He begins his examination by checking her eyes and the inside of her mouth, then listens to her heart and lungs. After checking her wounds, he begins running scans with a portable scanner. When that is complete he tasks his computer with analyzing the two sets of scans. After a few tense minutes the analysis is complete and he reviews the results while the rest of them wait anxiously.
"Well, it would appear her body is attempting to heal itself. Her wounds do look like they are closing and the tear in her liver is smaller. Albeit the difference is small, but it is measurable. Her brain scan is normal as well. I believe given time, she will recover baring any other injuries of course."
"That's great news!" Thor bellows slapping Loki on the back.
"Thank you Dr. Banner," Loki stammers. "I appreciate you and Tony coming all this way to do this."
"Think nothing of it. Glad to help," Dr. Banner answers.
"We'll come back to check on her each week and I will leave instructions on how to keep her nurished."
"Any idea when she might wake up?" Thor asks.
"Her brain scans indicate everything is functioning normally, in fact I believe she can hear us talking based on the readings I am seeing. So it can be anytime. It's really hard to predict this kind of thing, but everything that can be done is being done."
"So what should I do now?" Loki asks.
"Just watch over her. And make sure you are taking care of yourself. When she does wake up she is likely to be traumatized by everything that has happened and will need you to help her through it," Dr. Banner responds.
"We need to discuss some other issues as well. Is there some where else we can talk?" Tony asks looking to Loki and Thor.
Loki looks over at Shelia anxiously, obviously not wanting to leave her alone. "I'll stay here and run some more tests while you talk, its ok," Dr. Banner reassures him.
Reluctantly Loki follows Tony and Thor out of the room into a meeting hall nearby.
"Her ex husband is currently being detained by Shield. He has not been turned over to local aurthorities and will not be, unless you tell me too. The scene was cleaned up and I buried her dog. I also made excuses for both of your absenes from work. You will need to make some long term decisions," Tony states.
Loki looks to Thor at a loss of what to do. "Let's deal with Sean first." Thor begins, "how long can he stay in Shield’s custody before he has to be released?" Thor asks.
"Indefinitely, his crimes have been docuemented. We can turn him over to local authorities, but they let him out before and I have no doubt he will come after her again if given the chance. Shield can give him a trial of sorts and keep him imprisoned for attempted murder."
Loki visably pales being reminded of what almost happened to Shelia at Seans hands. He looks to Thor again for guidance. Part of him wants Sean put to death, part of him wants to kill him himself, but he knows that is not the right answer no matter how satisfying it would be for him.
"Have him tried and held by Shield," Thor answers for him.
"Ok now what about the house and her job? I assume you will be staying here on Asgard?" Tony continues.
"My banishment is still in place. Odin has only granted enough time for Shelia to heal. I will be facing judgement for returning to Asgard," Loki tells him.
"Loki, I will speak to father. You only came back to help her," Thor tells him.
"The condition upon my return was redemption. I have not been redeemed. I needed help, that is the only reason he has granted this time. I will face Odin's judgment," He responds.
"And since we don't know when that may be, I will take care of your jobs and the house. When you come back, I will get you set up in a new place with new job," Tony tells him.
"Thank you Tony, but you only need concern yourself with arrangements for Shelia. Can you do me another favor?"
Warrily Tony responds, "what is it?"
"In the bedroom closet there are some personal items of Shelia's, books and some boxes. I am sure she would want those retrieved."
"Already done. Everything is stored for your return."
"Thank you again," Loki tells him.
"Just don't make me regret helping you," He says grimly.
That night Loki lays next to Shelia holding her hand. "Dr. Banner says he thinks you can hear us talk," he begins. "Everything has been taken care of at home. Tony saw to it. So you don't have to worry about any of that. You can just focus on getting better and coming back to me."
He places a soft kiss on the back of her hand and closes his eyes to sleep. Not being able to interact with her, hear her voice, is hard for him.
The next week Tony and Dr. Banner come back to check on Shelia again. "There is noticeable improvement in her scans. In fact her liver has almost completely healed. Brain activity has also increased dramatically."
"That's good news," Loki says feeling encouraged.
"I would recommend someone being with her at all times. She could wake up at any moment. And talk to her. As much as possible. It will help to stimulate her. When she does wake up let me know right away."
