They woke up after one that day. First Bruce startled awake, not being sure for a moment where he was. Then, when he felt Anthony shift against him -having been woken by the subtle jump- he remembered everything the night before.
"Please don't go." was the first thing Bruce heard that day, as he felt hands tighten their grip in the sheets around him.
Anthony's words, spoken in a moment of waking panic, mingled with the memories floating into his thoughts from the night before. While he did have that odd surreal feeling of having had a long strange night -that normally told him the other guy had taken over, or that most people might associate with having drank too much- he still did not he had any misgivings about what had happened. He could think of a world of far less agreeable reasons to have woken up confused and half-naked, mostly as he had experienced a number of them.
Anthony did not know whether to feel silly for his sudden panic, or if it was justified. He lay there frozen, for a moment actually feeling awkward. He had no idea what all of this would look like to his friend from this side of the morning. He was not even sure how to judge his own behaviour, nor was he entirely free of the same surreal feeling that -in his case- normally did come from drinking too much. He looked up to Bruce from against his chest and tried to think of something to say, waiting for some sign of what his friend was thinking or feeling. He relaxed again when Bruce hugged him lightly and kissed his forehead. He settled back against him. There were, of course, far worse potential reasons for Anthony to question what could have gotten into himself the night before.
As Bruce lay there, he started to think. Twenty minutes later, he would have preferred if he had left his brain turned off a little longer. He was not bothered by the new aspect to their relationship, or how it had finally managed to come up. What did have him concerned, now, were Anthony’s motivations.
Anthony and he had both had a couple of long histories, which involved each other as often as not. Though their interaction could occasionally be volatile, generally it had been fun, healthy enough and comforting in between. He knew that while Anthony had any number of causal relationships, that they were always with strangers. He knew that when his friend approached people he was close to, for a more intimate relationship, it was because he genuinely cared and wanted something real with them. Bruce had his own doubts about whatever had come between them before, but he also knew how frightening it must be for Anthony to reach out to someone like this, considering all that had gone wrong in his love-life before. Admittedly, he thought his own involvement in this must look even more unlikely, from any perspective outside his own mind, and certainly, he thought there were a few main issues that needed to be addressed, but he also thought they could make this work. He found himself certain that he wanted to, even in this moment of calculation the morning after, so he hoped Anthony did not have any more doubts about it than he did.
The doubts that he was having had a lot to do with things past, and possible futures, more than they did anything current. He knew his friend often could not really be trusted with anything more than doing what he thought he had to, to bring about the result he saw as best. Anthony often took liberties with a lot of things, and people, if he thought he was doing what was right, in the end. This had played out badly for Bruce before. He was still a little bitter about some of it, if he was honest with himself. He did not want to let any of that come between them, no matter what their actual relationship entailed right now, it was too good; but it made him weary. In any future they had witnessed, things ended badly for both of them, mostly due to each other.
His main concern was how his own alternate persona would interpret this, how his mind might twist and warp this without his conscious involvement. His alternate personality, from what he could tell, was very fond of their friend, but was also far more bitter than Bruce wanted to be. The hulk -in some far off beginning, and more recently- had come to be very suspicious of Anthony trying to use Bruce for various purposes, and angry at Bruce for letting him. He agreed that Anthony was not innocent of this, but it was never malicious intent against Bruce, he knew. It was incidental, at best, or because he though he knew what was best for him, at worst. This annoyed him greatly, that his friend was so ready to assume he knew better than he did, but it was mixed up with feeling cared for and he was no longer truly angry about it.
He was also aware that, in part, what could be seen as occasional manipulation from his friend was almost never intended as dishonesty. Anthony liked to poke and prod at him, throw ideas and situations at him to see what he would do with them, making no claim at innocence. When he was manipulating consciously, he often made it very plain that was what he was doing. On some level it was an honest game to his friend, he knew Bruce was smart enough to figure it out and wanted to lead him through it. It seemed Anthony saw him as an equal, but always seemed to have some issue with how reserved and often repressed he tended to be. He had as much as told him so since their youth. The new addition to their relationship could put an uncomfortable twist on it though, and no one was more aware of that than Bruce was. Conversely, he now watched Anthony curled up against him -around him- just looking so obviously happy to be close to him, that it melted those doubts just a little.
Anthony drifted in and out of light sleep, curled around a fluffy mix of Bruce and the crisp, air filled duvet, comforted by the slightly rough thumb stroking against his upper arm. He was perfectly content to stay there, unmoving, until he noticed Bruce seemed pensive. He had taken the morning kiss as a good sign, a sign that his friend was not having regrets, but something was still obviously bothering him. He gave him an experimental squeeze through the covers and watched the smile, that he though he aught to see there, flash across him before fading again. He did not, of course, need to think very hard to come up with any number of things that could be bothering him, and he very much hoped to change that. He wiggled up further to rest his nose near Bruce’s ear on the pillow and got a shy smile for his effort. His own anxiety was a bit sharper than whatever doubts Bruce may have been having. He wanted some assurance that this, whatever it was going to be, was not going to cost him his best friend after he had worked so hard to get him back.
There was also some heavy weight lifted off him. For as long as he could recall, he had always been concerned with how close was too close. Objective opinion or not, Bruce has always looked cute to him; sweet, shy and very willing to be his friend. This had always made him feel protective of him, and a little -particularly in school- like doting on him a bit. It had never struck him as brotherly, or anything else in particular, just friendly. With all that Bruce tended to blush, he had often wondered if there had been some interest there; or, alternately, if Bruce though he was interested and was not entirely comfortable with it. Bruce had always seemed to invoke him to want to get into his personal space, not to intimidate him, as sometimes seemed to happen, but to be reassuring. He had always had to watch himself to make sure he was not pushing any boundary. Now he could relax and dote as much affection on him as Bruce would allow for, without the same worries. After over forty years of accumulated life experience, it was a very relieving and welcomed change. He nudged closer and kissed his cheek, testing for a response.
He got another smile that left a slight smirk behind when it left. He kissed him again, feeling too lazy to lift his head from the pillow. He kissed him lower on the cheek, then on his neck, making his way to his ear, where he started nibbling gently. He heard a happy little mumbling sound that seemed to indicate that Bruce was smiling. Suddenly he found himself comfortably pinned between fluffy bedding and more fluffy bedding containing Bruce. He felt his spine shift and relax under the weight and it felt really good. He looked up at him, searching for some sign of his intent hidden in the look of restrained amusement that he was getting used to seeing there.
“Are we good?” Anthony asked, just wanting that bit of assurance, gripping him through a tick white duvet and studying the nuances of his eye colour in the bright morning light.
Bruce could see the bit of anxiety in the impossibly dark blue eyes and was suddenly filled with an impulse to kiss it away. He supposed Anthony would have to take the kisses as his answer, since he did not feel like stopping long enough to say anything.
