Chapter 14
Rise of the Storm
Truths
An hour later found Logan sitting at Ororo's bedside watching Madelyne, Hope, Nathan and Charles impatiently. Hank walked over and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"She is going to be okay." Hank words would have comforted Logan if he hadn’t repeated them every five minutes.
"Wat ah miss?" Remy was sitting up across the room in bed. Hank walked over and checked some vitals as Rogue reentered the room dressed in her normal clothes this time with gloves.
"Well it looks like whatever you were doing with Rogue at the time her powers return knocked you out for the duration of the battle." Hank’s words were spoken in a medical voice. Remy's eyes got as wide as saucers.
"Yea Remy you missed all the action." Rogue said as she sat down next to the bed. "I'm glad to see that your okay." Remy nodded and then looked over to where everyone was gathered.
"What happened?" Rogue followed the direction of his look and sighed.
"I'll tell ya later." Remy nodded. Logan ignored the rest of their conversation more concerned as to what was happening with Ororo. Finally unable to resist he lifted her hand and leaned over whispering in her ear.
"Please Ro come back to me." Logan was unaware that as he did this each of the telepath's jerked as some of the spell started to unravel either because of Logan's touch or voice none of them were sure. But since Charles had a better idea of what might be going on he pulled himself from the work that they were doing.
"Logan." When he looked up at Charles he saw the knowing look in his eyes. "The spell that the Scarlet Witch put on her was complicated and when Karma tried to undo it all it did was create... well for lack of a better word a knot in her mind. So now were trying to fix it but even with all of us it might take some time." Logan sighed and Charles stepped around the bed. "But... just then when you spoke to her and took her hand part of it just untangled itself." Logan looked over at Ororo. "We all think that it would be beneficial and faster if we could telepathically put you in her mind to help her sort out reality from the spell." Logan looked back at Charles disbelief written all over his face.
"It wouldn't be like putting your memories in hers, she would get your presence nothing more." Logan looked back at Ororo and ran the back of his other hand over her cheek.
"What about the things I don't know about?" Charles thought about his question for a moment and then shook his head.
"Honestly I do not believe that matters, just your presence should help her. Even if all you do is basically stand beside her." Logan nodded slowly.
"This might be a little unsettling at first but its better if you just relax." Before Logan could respond that relaxing was the last thing he could do he felt the world shift beneath his feet. Everything was dark then he heard soft breathing and slowly the darkness ebbed. Then her soft sweet voice echoed.
"Is someone there?" The tone of her voice was curious and no smell assaulted his nose although in this place he didn't think it would.
"Yes." He heard her sharp intake of breath.
"Logan?" Slowly her body materialized before him, she was in a crouching position so when she stood the only thing covering her was a soft white dress that matched her hair. "How did you get here?" Logan smiled she seemed to be almost unaffected in this place.
"Our friendly telepaths." Ororo smiled and this time it reached her eyes.
"I'm glad your here." Ororo turned and motioned for him to follow.
"You were the only one... the only part of my mind that the Scarlet Witch didn't alter or so I am told. But it is something I feel in my heart you are the only one I can trust." Logan smiled at that and took her hand.
"I am here to help anything you need." Ororo pointed ahead and a dirt path appeared and brightening from the darkness was a forest.
"This is the path we will travel." Together they started walking forward. Ororo entwined her fingers with his as they came to the first fork in the road. "Which way?" Before them a sign materialized pointing in either direction. The left fork read 'Humans' and the right path read 'Mutant'. Ororo tilted her head and stared at both.
"We are mutants." Ororo nodded but stayed in one spot.
"I have a memory of us talking." Ororo paused and Logan waited for her to continue. "Logan you can't do this alone." Logan knew the conversation she was speaking of.
"Who's gonna help me? You? So far you've all done a bang-up job."
"Then help us. Fight with us." Ororo turned to him a smile on her face even though in the moment of memory neither of them were happy.
"Fight with you? What, Join the team? Be an X-man? Who the hell do you think you are? You're a mutant. The whole world out there is full of people that hate and fear you. And you're wasting your time trying to protect 'em? I got better things to do. You know, Magneto's right. There's a war coming. You sure you're on the right side?"
"At least I've chosen a side." Then a third path appeared between the first two. "You remembered it?"
"How could I forget it?" Ororo pulled him down the newly appeared path.
"You've chosen a side now."
"Whatever side your on darlin." Ororo shook her head as they walked.
"So your still not choosing a side?
"Why mess with a good thing?" Ororo shook her head at his words. Ororo came up short. Stopping as the road came to a sudden halt. The words flowed from her lips easily.
"Look who's come back. Just in time." Ororo remembered that moment she saw him return he didn't look through her that time as he had every other time especially when Jean was in the room.
"For what?"
"We need a Baby-sitter." At Ororo's words Logan's eyebrow shot up. Even now it did so again and Ororo almost laughed.
"Baby-sitter?" Logan's voice still had that touch of confusion to it.
"Nice to see you again, Logan." Even then for Ororo it really was nice to see him again. Another man in the house even if he didn't look at her the way that he looked at Jean. Although there was that moment that he looked at her when she thought he was checking her out.
"You know," Logan ran a finger over her cheek. "I should have gone after you instead." Ororo smiled and pushed him away.
"When it came to Jean you barely even saw anyone else." Logan shrugged off her words but he knew she was right. The path before them appeared slowly but changed around them. Rubble and fire burning. Ororo recognized this.
"We're getting killed out here." That single class had been one of the worst ever and not because of the students.
"Yeah, I know. They're not ready, Storm." Logan looked out at the scene as it played out before them.
"Logan." Ororo spoke, there was a strong edge of warning in her voice that Logan misread.
"Oh, Don't get your panties in a bunch." Storm jumped toward Logan and spun away from their cover just before the crushed car landed. Storm released him as they slammed against some more coverage. Logan was disoriented for a moment and in a slightly annoyed voice he spoke. Ororo shook her head sometimes the words that came out of Logan's mouth still surprised her.
"That was my last cigar."
"Logan!" The scene paused before them and Ororo looked at Logan. "Even then you didn't see me as anything more then a teammate." Logan stepped closer to Ororo but he was looking at their surroundings.
"That was a really good cigar." Ororo shook her head and the scene jumped forward a little.
"Logan, we work as a team." Anger slipped through into her eyes.
"Yeah, Good luck with that." Logan nodded at her but ignored her anger. "Throw me. Now!"
"Damnit, Logan! Don't do this!" Ororo's voice echoed in anger but again he ignored her. Logan stepped from behind the severed head.
"Class dismissed." At Logan's word the anger coursed through Ororo and not for the first time that day she wanted to smack him. The scene froze again. "You know I remember you said something at me that day but I never thought that you cursed at me." Ororo shrugged and wrapped her arms around herself.
"You might have been angry but I was confused and hurting. Even then Jean was my friend and so was Scott. She was gone, he was hurting and then there was you." Logan nodded at her words.
As they reached another fork in the road but this one was different. The right read 'Students' the left said 'Teacher'. Ororo tilt her head staring at it.
"I was both a Teacher and a Student." Logan watched her face carefully. Before them appeared the professor he sat in his chair watching Ororo.
“I don’t have long of this world but I am glad that I was here to see this.” The professor faded from view but Xavier’s office now Ororo’s office came into view. Bobby, Hank, Kitty, Logan and Ororo were in the office.
“So what now? What do we do?”
“Professor Xavier started this school. Perhaps its best that it end with him.” Ororo remembered looking around. “We have to tell the students that they’re going home.”
“Most of us don’t have anywhere to go. I can’t believe this, I can’t believe were not going to fight for this school.” Logan walked away from the window.
Warren walked in slowly and looked at all of them. “I’m sorry I know this is a bad time. I was told that this was a safe place for mutants.” Ororo looked at him and it finally sunk in Xavier was gone.
“It was son.” Hank’s voice was soft. Ororo stood her voice strong.
“And it still is. We will find you a room. Hank tell all the students the school stays open.” Hank smiled and nodded. It had never been up to anyone but Ororo.
The scene faded away Ororo looked at Logan as the scene faded a third path appeared.
“I was a student and a teacher but now. Now I am something more I am a headmistress.” Logan offered his arm to her and together they walked down the path.
Hope appeared before them and smiled softly.
“I am sorry, but it appears that we will get no further right now.” Hope reached out to Logan.
“Wait please don’t leave me alone.” Logan turned to Ororo and took her hands.
“Darlin’ don’t worry I won’t leave you like this, I will be back.” Logan nodded at Hope and everything disappeared. When Logan opened his eyes he was laying on his back surrounded by the telepaths.
“Tis a lot power in one room.” Remy spoke, he was sitting up with Rogue next to him.
“Aye no kiddin’.” Rogue replied and smiled at Logan lifting her leg up onto the bed. “So what now?”
“Well its slow even with Logan inside her mind the tangled web of lies refuses to let go.” Logan rubbed his forehead trying to push away the oncoming headache.
“How long has it been?” Logan looked at the group all of them looked fairly exhausted then glanced at Ororo.
“Give or take about ten hours.” Madelyne spoke as Hank shook his head examining Ororo.
“Roughly 9 hours and 32 minutes to be exact.” Hank tilted his head and leaned back. “Ororo has not changed much at all she does not appear to be in distress but I can tell that she was much more relaxed in close proximity to Logan.” Hope nodded but it was Charles that spoke.
“From what we can all devise it appears that Scarlet Witch was not given many boundaries but for some reason she strengthened the relationship between Logan and Ororo. I am not sure that is what she intended but he is the only one that she trust.” Charles lifted Ororo’s hand.
“Maybe it would be wise to allow Logan to assist her alone in her recovery.” Hope said with so much energy that she jumped up and sat next to Logan. “If she trusts him then why not allow him to unravel the ties and the lies.
“But how can I do that without any of you.” Logan looked at the powerful group and Hope smiled handing him an orb.
“This is all that you need. This orb is known as a physic light. I made it!” Hope bounced around and handed it to Logan. “It will allow you to travel into Ororo’s mind as needed but only for a few hours at a time.” Hope jumped down and left the room her attention already gone Nathan followed suit a moment later. Logan lifted an eyebrow and Madelyne smiled turning to Logan.
“I was surprised that she stayed on this situation as long as she did. Even though Ororo is not back to herself yet to Hope the problem is solved.” Madelyne closed her eyes and folded her arms as Logan looked down at the orb and then over to Charles.
“I am not sure how she made it but it is as she said. I would just try not to stay in her mind too long.” Charles said and Logan nodded. Rogue and Remy left the room leaving just Hank, Madelyne, Charles, Logan and the sleeping Ororo.
“What now?” Madelyne said glancing over at Charles then at Hank.
“Well, Logan now that we do not need to stay in the cabin maybe you should stay there with Ororo until she is well.” Madelyne tilted her head while she spoke sparing a glance at Ororo.
“Madelyne is correct since Ororo trusts you and only you it would be best if you facilitate her recuperation.” Charles put his hand on the orb. “This way if she awakens confused you will be the only one there.” Logan nodded taking a moment to look at Madelyne.
“You do look like her. Tell Hope thank you for me.” Logan said, Madelyne smiled and nodded.
“I will.” Madelyne smiled back at Logan as she spoke.
