Facing It

Chapter 14 Facing It
The small white home settled in between two large weeping willows and fenced in by a chain linked fence brought a smile to Ororo’s face. The grass was well trimmed and the lawn taken well care off. She fell in love with Mike’s mother’s home on sight. It looked peaceful and Ororo just knew wonderful memories had to have been made inside its structured walls.
She unbuckled her set belt before Mike could pull all the way into the driveway and park his vehicle right in front of an old black Jeep Grand Cherokee. Mike glanced at her with joy beaming from his eyes. HE reached over with his right hand and placed it gently onto Ororo’s thigh.
“Well this is it. This is where I grew up just me and my mom.”
“I can’t wait to meet your mom. You’re home looks so inviting.” Ororo smiled back right before she opened her door and stepped out.
Mike took out the pink dozen roses he had rested in the back seat and then began to guide his girlfriend towards the front steps. As they reached for the door it quickly opened and a heavy set short woman quickly wrapped her arms around Mike.
The sweet aroma from the inside hit the couple immediately and Ororo grinned even more as her mouth began to water. A fresh apple pie had just been taken out of the oven.
“My goodness boy don’t you know how to come home anymore?” The old woman joked as she kissed Mike’s cheeks over and over again, not even realizing that another person was standing less then a foot away from them.
“Mom I’m sorry. I’ve been busy working, but I’m all yours for the next three days.” Mike grinned with his eyes closed as he held his mother right back just as tightly as she was holding him.
Ororo had stood in silence for longer then two minutes she was sure without being introduced and the smile on her face was starting to disappear. She thought about clearing her throat but thought that rude, so she opened her mouth to speak.
“Is that a fresh apple pie?” She asked adjusting her smile.
Mike pulled away quickly from his mother and grabbed Ororo’s hand.
“Baby I’m so sorry.” He apologized and then reached over and placed a gentle kiss on Ororo’s cheek.
“Mom this is Ororo. Ororo this is my mother, Brenda.”
Ororo stuck out her hand and greeted the woman with a warm hello, but Brenda starred Ororo down. Whatever she was thinking Ororo couldn’t even have taken a guess because her face was totally blank.
Brenda took a long look at the tall and slender woman. She didn’t know what caused the taste in her mouth to disappear first; was it the cinnamon color of the woman’s skin or was it the fact that Mutant was clearly posted all over her. The long curly white hair that clearly went past the woman’s back and then the haunting icy blue eyes was a clear indicator to Brenda that she was no ordinary human. Brenda didn’t care much for either. She sighed briefly and hoped that Mike was not serious about what he had told her over the phone about this woman. Surely this was some kind of mistake. The woman’s power must’ve been witch craft.
“I’m sorry, what was your name again?” Brenda suddenly realized that she had been momentarily starring without any kind of reaction.
Ororo put her hand quickly back to her side being familiar with this treatment.
“Ororo.” She told Brenda trying her best to hold back the bitterness.
“Oh, that’s an interesting name.” Brenda said as she took the flowers from Mike’s hands and then turned around, entering the house again.
Mike studied Ororo and rubbed her back softly.
“I don‘t know about this Mike.” Ororo faintly stated to Mike as she stood there hiding her pain.
“Don’t worry honey. She’ll love you.” Mike whispered into Ororo’s ear tenderly before he followed his mother inside.

The dinner was great but the conversation was bland. Brenda said nothing to Ororo at all. Mike did his best to get Ororo into his mother and his conversations, but Brenda clearly didn’t feel like hearing anything Ororo thought or expected. She laughed and joked with Mike as all three of them sat at her table and eat her green beans, stuffing, duck, mashed potatoes, and homemade biscuits.
“You ready for dessert son?” Brenda looked directly into her son’s eyes with a kind smile.
“Is it an apple pie?”
“You know it baby. Anything for my one and only.”
“Mother you’ve really out done yourself. Dinner was divine. Ororo did you like it?”
Ororo kept her hostility inside and tried along with Mike to get Brenda to talk to her.
She smiled and looked at Brenda, hoping her bright hazel eyes would hit directly with her own eyes.
“Yes, I really enjoyed the duck? What kind of seasonings did you use?” Ororo asked.
“Mike you mean to tell me Ororo doesn’t know how to cook? “ Brenda shook her head in the negative and rose up to get the pie that was cooling on the kitchen counter top.
As soon as Brenda left the dinning room Mike reached over from across the table and held reached for Ororo’s hand. She didn’t pass it to him right away, but slowly it crept toward his.
“She’ll come around. Right now she’s just a little jealous.”
Ororo lifted her left eyebrow showing who much she really believed Mike’s nonsense.
“What does she have to be jealous about? I do not want to be your mother.” Ororo retorted.
His mother had no reason to be jealous as far as Ororo taking her place, Mike agreed, but instead of nodding his head and accepting Ororo’s angry reply, he starred straight at her eyes.
“Then what exactly do you want to be for me?” Mike suddenly grinned at Ororo. He was ready to challenge her.
Ororo was caught off guard by Mike’s counter statement. She had nothing to say. He had been waiting for this talk and she had said just the right statement to get the conversation rolling. Ororo starred down at her plate; a plate that housed only the grease and sauces of the meal and not the meal itself. She sighed and then winced as a sharp pain pinched at her chest near her heart.
“Ororo we’ve been dating for nearly a year now and I’ve…..”
“Here it is!” Mike was interrupted by Brenda storming back into the room, carrying the large pie.

“Mike you can not be serious!” Brenda whispered harshly that same evening as she and her son stood in the living room discussing Ororo and his relationship.
“I am mother. I told you how I felt over the phone before I got here.”
‘Mike she’s a Negro…better yet a mutant!”
“Mother I don’t care what you say. Nothing will change how I feel; I’m not going to give her up. I plan to marry her…I…love….”
Brenda in her rage stepped closer into Mike’s atmosphere.
“Don’t you dare tell me such nonsense! You don’t love her! You will not marry her!”
“Mother I suggest you lower your voice. I don’t want her hearing this. If you continue to shun her mother I don’t know what I’ll do but I won’t have it. Give her the respect she deserves. Give her a chance!” Mike threatened with his index finger pointed mere millimeters from his mother’s face.
“Son….”
‘No! This conversation is over. Tomorrow is another day and it needs to be another attitude coming from you. I love you mother, but I won’t stay another minute here if you won’t at least try and get to know Ororo. She’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Please, let me share my happiness with you. Let her show you why I love her so much.” Mike sighed finally and then reached out and pulled Brenda towards him for a hug.
“I love you, good night.” He said as he let her go and then drifted towards the back of the house. He traveled down the hallway and stopped at the first bedroom door. He knocked on it softly and then without waiting for a reply he walked in.
Ororo was lying in the bed with her eyes wide open. The moon shined well enough for Mike’s own eyes to spot her easily.
“I’m sorry for just walking in, but Ororo I need to talk to you.”
Ororo said nothing as she continued to watch Mike cross the bedroom and then kneel down beside her so that their faces were almost level. He reached out and searched under the covers for her hand. Once he grabbed it he pulled it from its warm confinement and brought it towards his lips. He began to kiss at her finger tips, softly while looking into her eyes.
“I know you just heard everything in there.” He finally spoke to her apologetically.
Ororo nodded her head yes.
“I’m sorry about today, I am. Ororo did you really hear everything?”
“Yes,” She answered him as if she were exhausted.
“Baby I’m so sorry. I wanted you to be the first person I told…about how I truly feel about you, but she needed to know that I’m serious about you…about us. You need to know too. Ororo I do love you. I do want to marry you. Please…,” He began to kiss each of her finger tips again with more force, in a desperate manner,” please, please…don’t break my heart.”
Ororo was speechless, she was becoming overwhelmed.
“I’ve learned so much from you Ororo. I know I’m a better person because of you. I want to be with you always, I want to take care of you and be by your side in everything you do. I want to have children with you, want to grow old with you. Let me? Say you’ll be mine; say you’ll be my wife. I won’t let any harm come to us, no one. I won’t let my mother hurt your feelings; I won’t be Logan, the man who doesn’t see you as the goddess that you are, the woman that you are.”
Listening to Mike brought Ororo to tears and she tried to hide them by turning her face more towards the pillow her head rested on, but Mike reached out from behind his back pocket and pulled out a single, white gold five carat emerald cut diamond. He let her hand go only to reach for her face. He wiped her tears away.
“You don’t have to hide from me, Ororo.” He smiled at her affectionately.
“Oh Mike!” Ororo began to sob harder as she abruptly rose up and wrapped her arms around his neck tightly.
“You gotta answer me, honey. Please tell me yes, please.”
Ororo kissed Mike’s neck in a frantic manner.
“I love you too, Mike.” Ororo really believed she did as she moved her lips upon his cheek and then his lean lips,” I’ll marry you.”
