Zac grabbed a pillow and a few of his favourite movie snacks before heading towards Sky’s room. He was dressed in a white wife beater and green plaid pajama bottoms. He clutched between his arm and chest a bottle of Dr. Pepper while the same hand carried a bag of white cheddar popcorn, a bag of salt and vinegar lays chips, a jar of salsa and a bag of jalapeño doritos. The other arm carried a few chocolate bars and the down filled square shaped pillow. He made his way to her room, a pack of cigarettes in the pocket of his pajama bottoms while thinking to himself how this would seem if they were living in a college dormitory. He slightly chuckled to himself as he lightly kicked at Sky’s door.
After a moment the door opened, showing Sky, her hair pulled back into a pony tail and she wore a green housecoat.
For a moment Zac stood dumb struck until Sky’s voice broke through his thought pattern, “I’m not naked under this, you pervert.”
The remark was a good natured joke, and was in just the right tone to snap him back into reality. He shook his head and chuckled a bit, “Sorry. I’m a guy… what can I say?”
Sky giggled and shook her head a little as she moved away from the door. Zac followed her into the room and glanced around. He’d been in Sky’s room a few times, normally with Caleb, Rogue, Bobby, and Jubilee. This time though, it was just the two of them.
“What’d ya bring?”
“Uhh two liter of Dr. Pepper… a few snacks,” Zac replied.
Skylar nodded, “Cool… cool. I am not eating the chocolate though.”
Zac chuckled and nodded, “And I am not touching your frozen yogurt. Sound good?”
“Deal,” Sky agreed.
“I talked the professor into letting me have chicken quesadilla in here, and a few beef tacos,” Sky added.
“Oh yummy Mexican food,” Zac replied with a grin.
Skylar nodded in agreement, “Yeah… well I know you like spicy things. I have to be in the mood for it.”
Zac sat down on Sky’s bed, setting the snacks on the night table while he asked, “So did you pick out a movie you wanted to start with?”
“I was thinking the Avengers,” Sky replied.
Zac chuckled at the irony of such a film but nodded, “Alright.”
Sky gave Zac an inquisitive look, “Why the chuckle?”
“The Avengers are a group of heroes with super powers and we’re at a school for mutants. Kinda ironic in a way,” Zac replied.
Sky blinked a bit before lightly giggling, “I didn’t even think of that!”
Zac chuckled as he opened the jar of salsa, and poured a bit onto a paper plate.
“Thanks, but I generally use sour cream,” Sky reminded him.
Zac smirked at Sky, “Who says its for you?”
“Oh wow, you’re not a gentleman at all,” Sky replied.
“Nope. I’m a rude boy,” Zac replied.
“Now that’s a total shock,” Sky joked, rolling her eyes.
Zac chuckled a bit as he opened the bag of doritos and scooped it in some salsa, ‘ruder than you might think.’
He stuck the salsa covered chip into his mouth and began to chew it.
Sky chuckled a bit as she started the movie and began eating a bowl of frozen yogurt. Zac chuckled a bit at the order she was eating in, “Dessert first huh?”
“Hey, I’m a girl,” Sky joked.
Zac laughed and nodded, “Can’t deny that.”
The teens fell silent as the movie started up on the TV, Sky in her housecoat with a bit of purple showing underneath the V created by the housecoat fabric up near her neck. Zac laying on his side, resting on one leg and an elbow. His head held up by one hand, and his other leg bent at the knee, his foot near Skylar’s thigh.
Six hours later, after two more movies and the snacks all consumed, Zac covered a sleeping Sky with a fleece blanket he’d found on a chair before walking out to her balcony. He took out the square box within his pajama pants pocket and put a single cigarette in his mouth, then flicked open the lighter and lit it, drawing in a drag of the chemicals and made a V shape with his fingers as he balanced the cigarette within the V and pulled it from his mouth, exhaling the smoke contained within his lungs. He watched the smoke blow away and smiled a bit to himself, his thoughts drifting away with the cloud of smoke. In some ways Skylar reminded him of Jessie… she was sweet and attentive to those around her, but fiercely aggressive if someone trash talked or harmed someone she cared about. As kind as Skylar was she could be just as vicious, he knew that was the feral animal in her. Jessica was just like that by human nature.
‘You can’t change your nature, no matter how much you try,’ He thought to himself as he inhaled another puff from the small white tube.
‘That’s why I can never go back… and why I can’t forget. I’m sorry Jess,’ He concluded sadly as he exhaled the second drag. While he calmed his nicotine craving memories began playing over in his mind of the blonde haired girl back in his hometown. He rested against the rail as he inhaled the last bit from the cigarette before dropping the butt onto the balcony floor and crushing it out.
He inwardly sighed as he stuck his hands in his pockets, ‘I do miss Jessie though.’
He rubbed eyes tiredly before heading back into Skylar’s room, finding her under the bed sheets.
‘The hell, I’ll crash here… she can scratch my ass up later if she’s got a problem with it,’ Zac thought to himself as he laid next to Skylar on top of the bed covers. He pulled the fleece blanket over himself and closed his eyes.
It seemed like moments later that sunlight filtered in through the window, gently washing over Zachary’s face. He blinked himself awake, before bringing up a hand to shield his eyes from the sunlight. He then blinked repeatedly, his breath hitching in his throat as he felt someone’s hand down near the waistband of his pants.
‘That is not my hand… I’m still in Sky’s room… so—‘ his mind trailed off as he angled himself to look over his shoulder. Sky, still under the blankets was cuddled up to him, and pulling his body closer to her own, a strange look on her face that he couldn’t quite decipher.
“Mom,” Sky mumbled as her grip on Zac tightened, pulling the boy so close he could’ve sworn they’d meld into a single entity if it were possible.
“No mommy… no,” Sky whimpered.
Zac blinked a bit at the situation. She was talking in her sleep, but whatever it was she was dreaming about it obviously wasn’t a very nice dream at all. Zac watched her troubled expression as her features became more strained. Glancing down he saw that her knuckles now shone white from the tight grip she had on him. He glanced back up at her face and quickly wet his lips. What to do? It was a nightmare, obviously.
Zac watched a moment more but when he saw a teardrop form in the corner of her eye, he’d had enough, “Sky?”
His hand hovered up near Skylar’s head.
‘I don’t really know what to do here,’ He admitted to himself, shifting a bit on the bed.
“Sky? Skylar, ya gotta wake up,” Zac called to her. He winced a bit, realizing that her finger nails were turning into claws. Glancing at the rest of her, he realized the form she was taking on. A panther.
“Skylar. Sky. Sky, wake up. You gotta wake up now,” Zac coaxed, his finger lightly touching her hair.
At the contact, Skylar’s eyes shot open and she pounced. In an instant, Zac found himself pinned under a half woman half panther, a feral look to her eyes.
“Sky, it’s me. It’s Zac. We watched movies in here last night, remember?” Zac called out.
After a moment the feral aggression subsided, and Sky climbed off of Zac, reverting back to her fully human form, knees brought up to her chest and clutched with her arms, “I’m sorry.”
Zac shook his head as he sat next to her, “You were obviously scared. Don’t be sorry.”
Skylar bit her lip a little.
“You wanna talk about what happened?” Zac asked.
Skylar shook her head ‘no’, and seemed to stare off into space.
Zac rubbed the back of his neck in thought before slipping in behind Skylar and pulling her into his chest, his arms wrapped around her waist.
Sky blinked a bit at the contact but slowly relaxed against Zac. His chin rested on her shoulder, “You know you’re my friend. I’m here. I’m not a stereotypical guy. When I say ‘I’m here for you’, it’s not like ‘I want in your pants so I’m gonna be there’, it’s genuinely that friends are there for each other because that’s what they’re there for. Sometimes you’re lucky enough to be born into the family you need… sometimes, you gotta go out into the world and find them. You’re like my sister, Sky. If there’s ever a time you’re scared. Just reach for me, I’ll protect you with everything I’ve got. Alright?”
Skylar slowly nodded a bit but didn’t look at him, "You know some say that guys and girls can't be just friends..."
"You and Caleb are," Zac pointed out.
Sky was silent for a moment before replying, "I have a crush on him."
Zac chuckled a bit, "Well, I don't have a crush on you. Unless you're crushin' on two guys... I think we're safe."
Sky nodded a little, gently nuzzling her head into Zac's neck.
"Besides... I wasn't born a guy," Zac added.
"So what? You identify as male... and I've never known a girl to act the way you do," Sky responded.
Zac chuckled and nodded, 'Yeah... that's right. I never did feel right as a girl... I've always been male... it's just that my body doesn't match. Thank God for binders and STPs.'
