Sorry once again for the long wait time. I'm a stay at home, homeschooling mom and I also run a business so lately my time has been really limited with the holidays coming up :( Hope that I still have interest in this story! Read and review. I would love to hear some thoughts!!
Rae leaned forward and placed both hands on her knees, panting heavily as she wearily hung her head. Ever since she had learned that she could port another person, Scott had had her training hard daily for the last few weeks. Not only was she training in her own simulations working on perfecting her combat to include the added bonus of her force field and the ability to teleport herself but now Scott had ordered her to also train with others adding a second session each day. She hardly had any time to herself or to spend with Logan. When she was able to be with him, she usually fell asleep in his arms within moments.
“Let's try that again, Rea. You need to be able to get a teammate out of danger a little quicker. You’re quick to get to their aid but it's taking you a few seconds too long to teleport them out,” Scott said as he walked up to her.
“I have my force field to protect us during those few seconds,” Rae pointed out, standing up and facing Scott. “Didn't you tell me once that I was supposed to count on my field to protect myself and my teammates?”
“Yes, I did but you also can't take too many direct hits with your force field either,” he pointed out. “While it's there to protect you, I also feel that you shouldn't count on it one hundred percent.
“It’s part of my power, Scott. I can't focus on perfecting one thing because you feel it would be more of a asset. I can teleport, yes but my field is necessary in order for me to be able to teleport. I can't do one without the other.”
He smiled down at her, “You're absolutely right. I'm sorry, Rae. Perhaps we should be focusing on strengthening your force field as well.”
Rae sighed, “I'm exhausted. I'm going to take a few days off from these second trainings. She put a hand up when he started to object, “I'm not negotiating, Scott. I need the time to myself and I would like to spend more time with my mate. Would I like to have more control over my abilities? Yes but not at the expense of working to exhaustion.”
Scott sighed and shook his head, “Can we finish this session first at least?”
“Alright,” Rae replied.
“Resume session.”
Projectiles immediately started flying towards Rae and she dodged one. It exploded a few feet from her new position, throwing up debit in all directions and she teleported to a platform just below one of the gun turrets. She pressed the button located on the side of her staff and it extended with a clink. She jumped upward and smashed the turret just as it began to fire another projectile, causing it to explode. She immediately extended her field and teleported to the floor. She scanned the room for Cyclops and found him near the center of the room, shooting his optic beams at a few lizard-like creatures who had holographically appeared. Out of the corner of her eye Rae noticed one above him on a platform and she teleported behind him, grabbing him and teleporting him to safety just as the creature jumped, landing exactly where Scott has been standing just moments before.
“Close one,” Scott commented. “Much quicker save that time, Rae. End simulation,” he turned to Rae as the holograms faded away. “That was better, Rae. You didn't hesitate between teleports that time. I think you've earned those few days off that you requested. We will pick back up where we left off after that.”
He turned and walked to the doors without so much as a second glance and Rae just shook her head,
Just like Scott, she thought. Ever the commander and never the friend.
Rae teleported herself to her room where she quickly stripped off her uniform and hoped in the shower. Once inside she turned the water as hot as she could stand and she relished the feel of the water as it scalded her skin but soothed her stiff muscles.
Training with powers is different than any of the combat training I did on Tar’lal and training with Scott is intense. His expectations of me are a lot higher and he pushes me so much harder. I wonder if some of his reasons has to do with my being Logan’s mate. I know there is no great friendship between the two of them. Logan tests Scott’s leadership and frequently undermines his orders. I trust Scott’s command but how can I know if he's pushing me for the team’s benefit or out of something else?
She turned off the water and stepped out of the shower and could hear the sound of voices from her bedroom. Sounded like Logan and Jubilee were having a debate about something. Rae wrapped a towel around her body, opened the door and stepped out into her bedroom.
“Look kid, I love ya but I ain’t going.”
“C’mon, Wolvie, it will be a blast and a half. It's supposed to be, like, the top movie of the summer!” Jubilee had both hands clasped together in front of her, begging.
“I ain't going!” Logan crossed his arms over his chest and shook his head.
Rae cocked her head to the side and regarded her mate and best friend.
“Rae, tell him to go. You're coming too, right?”
“What am I going to?” Rae asked.
“Jubilee is trying to drag me to some mushy soap opera movie. Not happening.”
“I told you! It's not just any movie, Wolvie, it's the top selling movie of the summer.” Jubilee stated.
“I would rather run naked through a corn field than go to some sob flick!” Logan argued.
“But Rae never has time to do anything now that Cyc has her on this stupid ridiculous schedule. I know…”
“Actually…” Rae tried saying.
“…that she would love…”
“Scott gave me…” Rae tried again.
“…to go and see…”
“Lee!” Rae said, raising her voice to end Jubilee’s tirade.
Jubilee’s eyes got big as the turned to look at her best friend,
“Rae! You just yelled at me!”
Rae’s face burned with embarrassment and shame,
“I'm sorry. I didn't mean…”
She stopped when Jubilee pulled her into a tight hug.
“I don't think I've ever heard you yell the whole time you've been here except when we are training and stuff,” Jubilee exclaimed.
“Was kinda sexy,” Logan purred, coming up behind Rae and wrapping his arms around her.
“Hey, control yourself!” Jubilee barked, pointing a finger at him. “We still haven't settled the matter of the movie.”
“I was trying to say that I took a few days off from training,” Rae said.
“Our fearless leader let you?” Jubilee asked, surprise heavy in her voice.
“Well, not exactly,” Rae said with a shrug. “I told him that I was going to take some time off since he had been pushing me so hard.”
Logan laughed, “That’s my girl.” He kissed her neck and hugged her tightly.
“So, you have a few days off then, huh? What do you plan to do with it?” Jubilee asked.
“I'm unsure. I thought I would relax and spend some time with Logan.” She crossed her arms over his and pressed herself back against his chest and he nuzzled her neck in return.
“It’s supposed to be nice for the next few days. We should take a hike or something,” Jubilee said.
“That sounds wonderful,” Rae exclaimed.
“Oh!” Jubilee shouted, eyes now shining with delight.
“Oh no,” groaned Logan. “I know that look,” he mumbled in Rae’s ear.
“Camping!” Jubilee said, clapping her hands together in glee. “We are totally going camping.”
“Kid, I don't think…”
“What is ‘camping’?” Rae asked, her brows furrowed together.
“Haha! Wolvie?” Jubilee turned puppy dog eyes to him and he heaved a big sigh, dropping his arms from around Rae.
“Start packing,” he grumbled. “We leave right after breakfast tomorrow.”
******
“Once we get ta the woods we are going to have to park and hike to the spot. I know of this clearing by a nice, clean stream,” Logan said as he turned the Jeep off the highway and onto a road so narrow and over grown it would have easily been over-looked. “Hope you gals didn't forget anythin’. We are now outside civilization. Welcome to my country.”
“This is going to be so much fun. I can wait to -oof- do some hiking and –ouch- maybe go swimming and –ugh- make s’mores…can't you drive a little slower, Wolvie? I think my guts are gonna come out my nose here soon!” Jubilee said. “What are you smiling ‘bout, Rae? Aren't your guts getting scrambled too?”
“This is so much fun! I've never experienced a ride like this before,” Rae replied, bouncing around in her seat as the Jeep bounced and jostled around over the rough terrain.
Logan laughed and patting Rae’s leg, “That’s my girl. I think you're gonna do great roughing it.”
“I don't know if I’m even going to be able to move after all this fun,” Jubilee groaned then grabbed Rae’s seat as they hit another bump. “How much more of this bouncing around do we have, Wolvie?”
“No worries, kiddo. We’re almost to the end of the road then it's time ta do some of that hikin’ you love so much.”
“Are you serious? You call this a road? I don't even see a road, just bushes and trees!” Jubilee exclaimed, throwing her hands out and gesturing to the view outside the windshield.
“Hey, wasn't it you who thought of this trip?” He pointed out. “’sides, this way no one will know where to look for us. Told ya, this is my country, I know where I'm goin’.”
Jubilee crossed her arms over her chest and glared at him from the back of the Jeep. Rae grinned at her best friend,
“It was a great idea, Lee. I'm already having an explosion. This is going to be the best few days off ever!”
“Blast, Rae,” Jubilee said, shaking her head at her best friend.
“What blast?”
“No. It's having a blast, not explosion.”
“Oh, well, either way I'm having fun.”
“You're hopeless, Rae.”
Logan chuckled from the driver’s seat and reached over and took Rae’s hand, giving it a squeeze.
“I think it's going to be great,” he said, looking at her.
“I agree.”
A few minutes later Logan pulled the Jeep to a stop. They were surrounded by the forest, trees thick with green leaves and little trace behind them of where they had just come from.
“Alright, grab yer shit and get ready for some hikin’,” Logan said as he opened his door and slid out of the Jeep. Rae removed her seatbelt and followed him out and around to the back of the Jeep. She helped him pull out their packs and the few smaller bags that they had packed for their stay in the deep woods. Jubilee slipped out of the Jeep through the back after all the equipment was removed and stretched, rubbing her ass as she did.
“Finally!” She gasped, throwing her arms open wide. “That must be how laundry feels getting tossed around.”
“Time to put those big girl panties on, kiddo. We have a 3 mile hike ahead of us and I wanna get us to our campsite before it gets dark.”
“Hey,” Jubilee said, “I've had my big girl panties on since the day I joined the X-Men! Bring on the hike!”
******
The three X-Men had been hiking for almost 3 hours when Wolverine stopped and sniffed the air.
“Smell that?” He asked Rae. She lifted her face to the air and sniffed.
“I smell something but I'm not sure what it is,” she replied.
“Smells like Kurt’s been bamfing around here,” Jubilee said, wrinkling her nose.
“Sulfur, ladies. There is a small hot springs out here. Pretty close to the creek I want us to camp by.”
“No way! A nice hot soak will be amazing after this hike. I'm sweating bullets,” Jubilee said.
“How much further?” Rae asked. She wasn't sure what exactly a hot springs was but she liked the sounds of it.
“Almost there, darlin’.”
Logan took her hand in his and squeezed it tightly but didn't let it go. They continued through the forest, slowly climbing higher and higher into the mountains. Soon Rae could smell fresh water mixed in with the scent that Logan had identified as sulfur and she could hear the sounds of trickling water. When they broke through the dense foliage she found that they were on the outer edge of a clearing near a small creek.
The area was slightly overgrown with grass and various other weeds but it was obvious that it had been used in the past, the trees around the edges of the clearing showed signs of being cut down before. It was roughly 20 feet from the edge of the woods to the edge of the mountain fed creek, the clearing being slightly semi-circular in shape and went right up to the edge of the creek. There was a game trail visible on the opposite side of the creek from the clearing but its continuation was swallowed up by the forest.
Rae wondered if the location of their camp spot wasn't one Logan had made himself. The location wasn't just convenient for fresh water as well as hunting with the obviously frequently used game trail but the way that the trees were cleared out and the location of the camp itself, the sun would shine down right into the clearing for most of the day. Trees were already laid over along the edges of the clearing supplying them with wood that would undoubtingly be dry and ready for a fire.
“What do ya think?” Logan asked.
“I think I need this backpack off!” Jubilee said with a groan.
Rae turned in a circle, taking in the location once more and nodded. Logan had indeed chosen an ideal site for their camp. She would have to ask him later about his history with it. For now she had to agree with Jubilee, it was time to take off her pack as well and work on getting their camp ready.
“Well?” Logan asked, his hand squeezing hers again.
She smiled at him, “It's perfect!”
Rae pulled him to her and threw her arms around his neck and kissed him roughly.
“It's perfect and so are you,” she breathed, when they broke apart. “I can't wait to spend the next few days camping with you.”
“I got a lot to teach ya,” he winked. “For now I need to teach you how ta put up a tent. I fucking hate tents honestly. Would rather sleep out under the stars. Tents are too much trouble.”
“Well, I'm not sleeping under the stars! I want my tent.” Jubilee said, undoing a few buckles on her backpack and holding up a green tent bag high in the air. “My home away from home! And I'm going to put it right…there.” She pointed to a spot and walked to it, dropping the bag to the ground.
Ten minutes later Rae and Wolverine were standing back from their assembled tent grinning at each other.
“Well, that didn't take as long as I thought it would,” he said, nodding towards the dark blue tent.
“It was quiet easy, I think,” Rae said.
The muffled sounds of curses and shrieks of frustration drifted towards them on the gentle breeze and they walked around their tent to find Jubilee’s tent laying in a crumpled heap; she was crouched down attempting to piece the collapsible poles together.
“Can't get this…damnit! Why won't you just stay in there? Ugh! I give up!” She stood up and kicked at the tent.
“Might want to be a bit gentler to your ‘home away from home’ there, kid,” Logan said, crossing his arms over his chest and raising a brow at Jubilee.
“Shut it, Wolvie!” She threw a handful of fireworks in his direction and kicked at the tent again.
“Would you like me to help you, Lee?” Rae asked, already reaching for the poles. “Logan showed me how to put ours together and I'm sure I remember. This one is different but it can't be too difficult if we work together.”
Wolverine stood there watching the two ladies sort out the pieces for a few moments, brushing off the singed threads of this shirt.
“I'm gonna go get firewood and get a fire goin’,”
Neither of the girls replied, chocolate brown and beet red heads together as they worked out the tent assembly. Logan shrugged and headed to one of the logs laid over near the tree-line. The grass flattened under his footsteps and scented the air as blades were broken and crushed under each heavy step. He inhaled deeply, taking in the scents of the forest around him, as much to relish the freedom it gifted him with as to identify any potential dangers or advantages for him and his companions.
He wasn't a stranger to these woods. When he had told Jubilee that this was his country he wasn't just talking about nature in general, these woods were his. He had spent time out here on his own, he knew exactly where the small hot spring fed pool was, that there was a pond about a mile to the south that held an abundant of rainbow-hued trout and the saw-toothed pike. These woods were rich with game: deer, rabbits and heavy breasted birds. And if one knew where to look, a variety of berries could be found. He had made these woods his home, this very spot his camp and he was more than happy to share it with his mate. As the thought came to him he turned and watched her. As always, she was wearing a smile, those straight and strong teeth flashing brightly in the sunlight.
He loved her, loved her more than he had ever loved anyone. He still couldn't wrap his brain around that, the simple fact that loving her caused his chest to ache and that when he wasn't around her it felt like there was a huge black hole in his world. He loved those amazing violet eyes that sparkled all the time, and how they were magnified by their very shape; wide and almond shaped with long full lashes that were the same deep red-purple as her hair. Her full, heart-shaped lips beneath a straight nose that ended round and very slightly turned up were well in place with her oval face and high cheekbones. He adored that there was a scar that crossed through one eyebrow, causing it to be slightly off-balance with the other and that her ears, with their slightly tapered points, stuck out just a tiny bit. Perfectly imperfect she was and he loved every inch of her scarred body.
He shook his head as if it could clear away his thoughts. He wiped his brow with the back of his hand and began to unbutton his shirt. It was unusually hot for this late in the summer. He may have to take the girls down to the pond once they were all set up. He glanced up at the sky, surprised by how quickly they had made the hike up the mountain and how much daylight they still had. Neither of the girls had mumbled so much as a complaint the whole hike, neither asking for a break or about the distance left to go. He had stopped them a few times along the way, allowing for quick bathroom breaks and to give their smaller shoulders a few moments reprieve from the weight of their heavy backpacks but not even a peep of resentment from Jubilee when they had to shrug their burdens back on and continue.
Logan pulled off his shirt and tossed it onto a nearby log, ran his hand through his thick dark hair and picked out one of the logs he had fell last year and left to dry. With a soft snikt and a tiny amount of thought he let out one of his claws and proceeded to cut the pre-limbed log into manageable lengths. The work wasn't hard, his claw ripped through the log with minimal resistance but by the time he had the entirety of the log cut sweat was trailing its way down his sideburns, over his chest and down his back. He straightened up and pulling up the hem of his tank top, wiped the sweat off his brow.
“Need some help?” came a voice from behind him and he smiled into the shirt.
“From you, darlin’, always.”
Rae gave him one of those million dollar smiles that melted his insides and choose one of the largest of the logs. She flipped it over and set a smaller long on its surface then took a step back and watched as Logan lifted his hand and brought it down, cutting the log into two perfect pieces.
“Again?” she asked with a nod towards the two pieces.
“Yeah, I think I’m going to need to cut them all smaller.”
She picked up the pieces and set them together on the log and stepped back again. Logan really was amazing and she loved just watching him move. He was almost graceful in a way, his muscles flexing as he brought his arm downwards, claw hitting in just the right place to cause the wood to explode apart into 4 pieces. She stepped forward and gathered up the pieces, replacing them with another log as well. She carried the split wood over towards their tents, and to the ring of stones that she had noticed earlier upon her first inspection of the clearing. Jubilee’s tent shook as Rae walked by and the younger woman’s head popped out.
“Whatcha doin’?” she asked.
“Firewood,” Rae replied, holding out the armful of wood. “Logan is working hard so I figured that I would give him a hand.”
“I’ll come help soon as I’m all set up in here. I’m going to put on some shorts. This heat is a killer!” Jubilee said then disappeared back into her tent.
Rae shook her head and set the wood beside the fire then walked back to where Logan was still busy placing logs on the block and cutting them with his claw. Rae continued to gather up the wood and carrying it over to stack it neatly near the fire pit. At some point Jubilee had joined her, both of them taking turns carrying wood and replacing the logs for Logan as they went. Soon all the logs had been split and there was a large, neat pile of wood.
“Good team work, Rae!” Jubilee said, holding her hand up above her head which Rae slapped.
“Thanks, ladies,” Logan said, coming up behind them. “Now I think it’s time for you two to catch us some dinner.”
They both turned to him with confused looks on their faces.
“Just make a fire and let’s roast us some hot dogs,” Jubilee said, pointing to the fire circle.
Logan shook his head, “Sorry, kid. I didn’t bring any hot dogs. You wanna eat, gotta get it yourself.”
“What?! Tell me you’re joking. Please, please tell me that you are joking,” Jubilee’s eyes were wide and she turned to Rae. “You. Tell me that he is joking.”
“Uh, I’m not sure. Logan?” she gave him a questioning look.
She thought she had an idea of what he was talking about but she wasn’t quite sure if that was it. He couldn’t really be expecting her and Jubilee to hunt for their food during this entire trip. Weren’t they here to relax and enjoy themselves?
“You and you,” he said, pointing to each of them in turn. “Will have to supply us with our food. I don’t care how you do it. Use your powers or don’t but I won’t be helpin’ ya.”
Jubilee’s mouth dropped open and closed like a fish gasping for air and Rae cocked her head to the side.
“No-no! You’re joking. Let me see your bag. I know you brought something in there!” Jubilee started to storm off towards the tent he and Rae would be sharing.
Logan threw out an arm towards the tents,
“Knock yourself out, kid but ya ain’t gonna find shit in there in the way of food. ‘Sides, if I had brought anything where the fuck would be store it in this heat? Ain’t no fridges in these woods.”
Logan’s voice grew louder and louder the further Jubilee got and he shook his head after her. Rae placed a hand on his shoulder,
“Logan, why didn’t you tell us this before? I brought the few things that you asked me to but I wasn’t aware that you were going to have us hunting on this trip. I didn’t bring any of my blades with me.”
“The shit that you packed should be good. I brought a few cans of veggies also and don’t worry ‘bout knives, I brought those too. Before you ask, yes, I brought that special blade that ya had made. I know you can do this but I think Jubilee needs a few lessons in survival training now and then. I-I worry about the girl sometimes. Love her to death but she can be so…soft.”
He let out a sigh as Jubilee came storming back with a tin can in her hand, holding it in the air and waving it around like a flag.
“Canned peas? You brought cans of corn and peas with us on a camping trip? Are you crazy?” she wailed.
“Hey, there’s spinach and green beans in there too,” Logan said, with a sly smirk on his face. He looked like a cat getting ready to toy with a mouse. “Gotta keep you strong and healthy, kiddo. Can’t have you tryin’ to live off all that processed meat. Not good for the heart, ya know?”
“Wolvie, I’ll kill you. I swear it, I will kill you!”
Jubilee looked down at the can in her hand and then slumped to the ground, defeated.
“I’m hungry,” she moaned, dropping her head to her knees.
“Welp, guess we better start walkin’ to the lake then. Time to do us some fishing.” Logan said with a smile.
*****
“So, you didn’t bring any food and you brought the one tiny collapsible fishing pole. How exactly are two of us supposed to catch any fish?” Jubilee said, hands on her hips and glaring at Logan.
“Hey, that’s for you to figure out. I’m just here to keep an eye on ya,” he replied, crossing his arms over his barrel of a chest.
Rae stood at the edge of the lake and looked out over the water. She had never used a fishing pole back on Tar’lal. They had usually set up nets and traps where the lakes and ponds met the mouth of the rivers or steams. Jubilee had a point, how were they supposed to catch any fish in all this water? She continued to watch as a couple of fish jumped out of the water. She could guess about where they were in the water and she doubted that there would be too many near the shallows of the shore.
I wonder if I could…no, that couldn’t possible work. Could it? She thought. I wonder how much oxygen I could keep in my field with me. I would have to contract it around my legs for swimming but if I could…
She shrugged. “It might work,” she said out loud as she started to strip off her clothes.
“Uh, Rae, what are you doing?” Jubilee asked as she knelt beside the small tackle box, poking at some of the lures.
“Going fishing,” Rae answered with a smile.
She formed a field around her and teleported. She popped back up about 6 feet above the surface of the lake near the middle dove into the dark water. She adjusted the field around her body as she dove beneath the surface and felt the icy chill of the water around her. Her field contracted around her arms and legs, forming a second skin to keep out the water and to make swimming feel more natural. She extended the area around her upper body and head to help hold as much oxygen as possible. She inhaled a deep breath of the oxygen contained in her field and started to swim.
****
“It’s been 15 minutes. Do you think she drowned?” Jubilee asked, both hands on the pole she held as she stood beside Logan, eyes on the glassy surface of the lake.
“Nah. I would have known if she had.”
“How long can she hold her breath for?” Jubilee asked as she began to reel in the line.
“Dunno. Never timed her before. Couple minutes. Maybe,” he shrugged.
“I’ve seen her stay under in the pool for a long time.”
Jubilee cast her line again and they stood there in silence as they continued to watch the lake.
“I’m kinda getting worried.”
“Yeah, kid, me too.”
At that moment there was a soft pop and Rae dropped out of the sky behind them, gasping for air with three fish flopped on the ground beside her naked body.
“Rae!” Jubilee cried out dropping the pole and rushing to her best friend’s side. “We were starting to get worried. You were down there for so long we thought you drowned.”
“No, you thought she drowned,” Logan pointed out.
“Yeah, well, same thing. Look! You got fish. How did you get fish? And you smell like a fish. Eww.” Jubilee stood up and backed away from Rae, holding her hand to her nose.
Logan extended a hand to Rae. He pulled her to her feet and regarded the three flopping fish with interest.
“How did you get those?” he asked, motioning to the fish with a nod of his head.
“I waited and they came. Then I pulled them into my field. It was hard to focus when I had fish flopping around my belly but I did it!” She beamed at him, obviously proud of herself.
Logan laughed and pulled her to him, kissing her forehead.
“Jubilee is right though, you do smell like a fish. Let’s get these back to the camp and get dinner all cooked up then we can hit that hot springs and get you scrubbed up.”
