Logan stalked into the woods. He could hear everyone behind him, walking. No one was talking and the tension was so high and thick he could almost cut it with his claws. He turned towards them and they immediately stopped walking. They had been through this many times in the danger room, but practice somehow was never exactly like the real thing. You could come up with every scenario possible, but fate would always throw that one thing in just to knock you off balance. With just a look, everyone seperated, going different directions. Taking a deep breath, he turned and continued farther into the trees. ********** ********** ********** Sabretooth stood at the base of a tree. He was in shadow thanks to the setting sun. Pulling a cigarette from the pack at his waistband, he lit it and took a deep draft, exhaling slowly. He watched the match burn down to his fingers before blowing it out and dropping it on the ground. The frails that runt had with him wouldn't dare try to take him on by themselves, he arrogantly thought. Looking towards the sky, he noticed the clouds rolling in and they didn't look friendly. Thunder rolled in the far distance and it wouldn't be long before they were all drenched from rain. Reaching up, he grabbed the trunk of the tree with his claws and began to pull himself up. He perched on a branch high enough to not be easily spotted, but still low enough to see what was going on below. Now the waiting began. ********** ********** ********** Jubilee was frantic to get loose. Her struggles didn't get her anything, but raw and bleeding wrists. She tried to use her powers, but she was too upset; couldn't concentrate. She tried to see out the window, but all was quiet. She couldn't see Creed anymore and that had her worried. As intimidating as he was, she'd rather be able to see him as not. At least then she knew what he was up to. She stopped struggling and took several deep breaths to try and calm her nerves. Closing her eyes, she tried to remember what Logan had taught her. "Clear your mind, darlin'. Let nuthin' distract you from your purpose . . . ." Continuing with deep breathing, she tried to clear her mind. Then she thought of nothing but the ropes binding her wrist bursting with colorful flames and falling from her skin. It seemed like forever had passed when she heard a hiss. Then there was a pop and finally the familiar sound and feel of her fireworks flying from her fingers and hands. She fell to the floor before she could celebrate and the door was being smashed in. She jumped and ran before Creed could get ahold of her, but just as she reached the rear door of the cabin, a figure stepped in front of the window. Screaming, she turned to return the way she had come and ran into a brick wall. A hairy brick wall. Looking up from the floor she'd fallen onto, she looked straight into Beast's eyes. Without hesitation, she leaped up and threw her arms around his neck. "Omgbeasti'msogladitsyou . . . ." her voice just trailed off into one long, incoherent sentence as he put his arms around her and hugged her back; laughing. Finally, holding her away from him, he did a cursory inspection of her to check for injury and hissed at the abuse that was apparent by the look of her wrists. There was a commotion outside and she looked at Beast in question. "Wolverine and Sabretooth are having a discussion and are in quite a disagreement." She looked at him in astonishment and asked, "Why is no one helping him?" "Storm and Rogue are there if he needs back up." "What do you mean?" "He has forbidden us to help in any way save to return you to the Blackbird." "The hell you say. He needs help and I'm going to help him," she started to stalk towards the door when Gambit stepped in front of her. "Move it, Gumbo, or I'll fry you." "Non, petit. Logan say you don' help. He said to bring you back to the Blackbird and thas wha'we gone do." His look dared her to defy him, but his lips turned up slightly as he saw the rebellion rise in her. He knew exactly what she was going to do. She let her gaze trail over the men standing around her. "Fuck each of you! I can't believe you are going to let a friend, a man that considers you his family, fight someone to the death to save the girl?" She turned and looked between Scott and Hank. "Hank, this I expect out of Scott, but you?" Scott started to protest, but was cut short. "I'm going out there to help him and none of you are gonna stop me. You can either join me or you can stay the fuck out of it." She turned back to Gambit and stepped to move around him when his arm stopped her. She gave him a look of death. "At least, take my coat. You distract him and get him killed in that," he motioned to what she was wearing and she looked down at herself. She had forgotten that she was wearing nothing but a t-shirt and panties. She didn't smile or respond in anyway, but to accept the coat and put it on. With their differences in height, the coat tails dragged the floor and the sleeves swallowed her arms whole. Taking it off and handing it back to him, she said, "It won't work." "Here," another male voice stopped her and she turned to face Scott. He had removed his bomber jacket and was holding it out for her to put on. "Zip it up and give me an arm." He began to roll up the sleeve on one arm and Gambit took over the other one. She looked down at the jacket covering her and felt like a small child playing dress up. She was covered to mid-thigh by the jacket and with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows, she was ready to face the world. She walked to the cabin door where it hung on one hinge and stepped through. What she saw had her wanting to scream in terror. It began to rain. ********** ********** ********** Logan sighed, releasing the breath he hadn't realized that he had been holding. Scott and the others had gotten to the cabin and inside before anything happened to Jubilee, but he didn't lose focus from the relief he felt at them finding her alive. The girl . . . He snorted at the thought of her as a girl. She was right. She wasn't a kid anymore and it was time that everyone realized it. Him especially. He had always known how she felt about him. Had tried to ignore it at first and it had been easy to do so. All of that changed when she started blossoming into a woman. Her body hadn't hidden the fact she was growing up and his body hadn't been able to ignore it. His leaving the mansion had become more frequent over the years until he hadn't come home anymore. The Prof had sent her with Banshee to be a part of GenX and be with kids her own age in order to bring him back. She'd done a lot of growing up during their separation. He hadn't failed to see that and thought it a cruel twist of fate that she be part of his training exercises when she'd come back to the mansion. It had been torture not touching her when he had opportunity. When he'd look for someone to spar with to show the students a new move and his gaze would pass over her and he would choose another student, the hurtful pain in her eyes cut him to the core. He hadn't meant to hurt her, but he was scared. For all of his bravado, she was the one thing that could bring him to his knees with fear. He heard a soft sound to his left and, removing her and everything else from his thoughts, he went on the hunt. ********** ********** ********** Sabretooth took one final puff from his cigarette and, licking his finger and thumb, snuffed the fire out and let it fall to the ground. He stood on the branch and reached up and pulled himself higher into the tree. He would have better cover here, but he was becoming impatient waiting for the runt to come and find him. He knew they'd found the cabin and rescued the frail by now. What is taking the runt so long, he thought to himself, licking his lips in anticipation. He was about the change positions again when he heard a crackle. Scanning the ground around the base of he tree, he spotted something that made his evil smile spread from ear to ear. White hair and dark skin moved slowly towards the tree he was perched in. His skin itched to pounce, but his training and years of practice held him in check and he waited for her to move below the tree branch he had recently vacated. She finally moved below and past the branch and, silent as a church mouse, Sabretooth dropped onto the ground. ********** ********** ********** Ororo moved among the trees as silently as she could. Logan had trained them all well, but still, no one was as silent as he was. It was times like this that she wished she has his ability to smell things. She had thougt several times about taking to the air, but she knew she couldn't see the ground through the tree cover. She concentrated a second and stilled the wind around her. All the better to hear things with. She knew Logan wouldn't like it because it would mess with his sense of smell, but she needed to hear. She had defied his orders to stay at the cabin and as Rogue took to the air, she took to the forest. She scanned the trees above her looking for signs of the large mutant, but saw nothing. Moving a little farther North and away from the lake, her feet hit a patch of dried leaves. She stopped for a second and listened and when she heard nothing she moved onward. Slowly. She looked at he ground and saw a spent cigarette butt lying on the ground. She bent to inspect it and found it to still be warm, but not hot. Standing she moved past the tree it was next too and she had no more than got past the tree than she felt a disturbance in the air behind her. Her eyes rolled over white and forming claws with her hand, she spun fast and shot lightening towards her target that was no longer there. Caught off guard at the speed with which he moved, the fist made contact with her jaw before she had time to react and everything went black. The last thing she remembers was thinking Logan had been right and the rain hitting her skin.
