Four hours, Kitty thought, not including the time she spent waiting for the bus. That, she calculated, brought it up to six and a half hours. It would have been faster to drive, she scolded herself. Or to just wait for Rogue and Jean… Straightening her spine and adjusting her backpack, she paid the cab driver and waited until he had turned around and was driving away before punching in the gate code to enter the grounds of the Institute. It was nearly midnight and the lack of city lights in close proximity afforded the property a brilliant show of moonlight and milky white stars, illuminating the long gravel drive.
“Hey…”
“GAH!” Kitty spun to face the owner of the voice, one hand pressed over her heart as if to slow it’s rapid rhythm back to normal, the other drawn back in a fist. “Damn it, Wanda…”
“Sorry,” the other girl shrugged unapologetically. “Out for a smoke an’ saw you skulking up the walk.” She held out the half-crushed pack of clove cigarettes, shrugging again when Kitty shook her head in negation. “What’re you doing here on a school night?” she asked in an almost teasing tone as she lit the cigarette between her lips.
“Just…had to come back and take care of some stuff.” She cleared her throat as a waft of smoke covered her face. “What’re you doing here? Don’t you have an apartment in town?” Even as she said it, she knew it was a misjudged statement.
“You don’t remember what happened to the last place, huh?” Wanda laughed mirthlessly, holding her cigarette down by her side. She gestured with it listlessly, not meeting Kitty’s eyes. “I need to quit these… they bother Lucas.” She dropped the cigarette with a sigh of longing, almost reverently grinding it out with the toe of her boot. “So really…why are you here?”
Kitty wavered between telling the truth and telling a half truth. She settled for the latter, hoping it was enough to get her out of the chill air and away from Wanda’s penetrating gaze. “Rogue said she needed me for something and I figured since it was a slow week…” She shrugged, a mirror of Wanda’s own, earlier gesture.
Wanda raised a brow, her new silver brow ring winking in the moonlight. “Huh.” She looked away, staring at the squares of light marking the bedrooms in the mansion. “Thought it was…huh.”
The hairs on the back of Kitty’s neck stood up immediately, making her skin crawl. “What is it?” Her steps crunched loudly in the sudden silence between the her and Wanda, a scuffling sound made only the more irritating by the crickets that decided *now* was a good time for an impromptu chorus. “Wanda?”
The dark-lidded girl sighed and ground her cigarette with decided force into the driveway. “Just thought it was about Miss Firecracker[1] or somethin’.” Stuffing her hands deep into her jacket pockets, Wanda let the corner of her mouth curl into a bitter smile. “Maybe I’m wrong.”
“Miss… you mean Jubes? Is something wrong with her? Is she hurt? Sick?” Kitty took another step closer to Wanda, and the Scarlet Witch did not budge. “Why would Rogue call me because of Jubes? Why wouldn’t the Professor, or Storm… Logan would be the one,” she said, mostly to herself. “Wanda, you’re not making sense.”
“I’m not the one babbling,” she pointed out, looking at Kitty again, this time with a hooded gaze that could have been anything between anger and pity. “Just thought it was one thing but guess it’s not.” She shrugged a final time, making Kitty wonder if she had some sort of back problem, and turned and walked towards the house. “You coming?”
Kitty stared at the dark shape that was Wanda, watching the way the other girl did not seem to look directly at her, the way she was suddenly solicitous to her, holding out one hand as if she would guide her into the house herself. “Wanda, you’re not a liar.” Her voice was soft but not weak, demanding respect. “I’m tired. I’m too tired for games right now. I’m sick of being everyone’s everything and I just want to know what the Hell is going on before I walk in there.” To her own private horror, Kitty heard tears staining her voice and felt the hateful things prick at the back of her eyes, threatening to spill over her lower lids and onto her cheeks. Her fingers worked against the straps of her back pack, twisting and clenching as she sought some answer to her confusion.
Wanda dropped her hand and looked down at the toes of her boots for a moment before fixing Kitty with a hard, level gaze. “I don’t know why Rogue thought she needed to be part of the whole thing. It’s not between her and Kurt and Remy and Jubilee. Hell,” she sighed, looking up at the sky. “It’s not even involving you and Remy, really, not if what I heard is true…”
A knot tightened in Kitty’s stomach, resolving into nausea. Wanda did not have to tell her anything. She knew. She saw it as clear as day; she could imagine a thousand scenes in a thousand variations and still, she thought distantly, she had no right to anger. “No, I guess not…” She blinked rapidly, clearing her eyes. The knot in her stomach was hard and heavy, like a block of ice. Her chest hurt and a tiny green vine of jealousy was growing low in her belly. “You know if there’s any coffee?”
Wanda cocked her head to one side and parted her lips as if to speak, then thought better of it. She nodded and turned, walking back to the mansion at a much slower pace, Kitty trailing her.
