Chapter 13

The next few days passed with relative ease. The lack of residents in the house made it easy for Kurt and Kitty to continue their relationship in relative privacy. The few students who were around were a bit young. Since Kurt and Kitty were usually inseparable partners in crime, no one noticed a different vibe coming from them. Per Logan's request, they spent the nights in their own beds. He'd told them that since it was still a school, and they were still students, he'd need to insist on them following the standing rule of no co-ed rooms. They agreed that it would also be setting a poor example for the younger kids if one was seen in the morning, leaving the other's room. Instead, they chose to find creative trysting spots all over the grounds.
Winter left a lot to be desired in the way of outdoor rendez-vous locations for a pair of lovers attempting to be discreet. Kurt and Kitty spent time together vertically as well as horizontally. They often took one of the professor's more discreet cars into town and went to the movies. Being friends for so long made things both easier and more difficult when picking out a film to watch. They knew each other's tastes, Kitty liked romantic comedies and Kurt preferred action movies, but now they each felt the unusual sensation of wanting to cave to the other's needs. Kurt was trying to drag Kitty to the latest movie starring Hugh Grant, while she insisted on a film starring 'The Rock.'
While sitting in a coffee shop outside of Bayville, they hit their first emotional snag. Kitty liked the shop because there was less of a chance that their coffee would be dumped 'accidently' in their laps. They'd just caught a late show and now Kurt was speaking animatedly about his plan to design a harness that could be used for rescuing people from taintain sides or other places where landing a jet would be difficult. His eyes were bright with excitement and her hand was clasped tightly in his when the shop door opened and Kitty caught sight of a familiar face over Kurt's head.
Bobby waved and started over to their table. Automatically, she sat upright and pulled her hand from Kurt's. He looked startled at her fearful expression and turned around.
"Hey, Kittycat." Bobby said, greeting her with a friendly kiss on her cheek. "What's up, Elf?" He slid into an empty seat at their table. Kitty glanced at Kurt quickly and noted his blank expression.
"Kurt has a great idea for updating some of our rescue equipment." She said, leaning back in her own chair. "Why don't you tell Bobby while I get us a refill." She leapt up from the table and hurried over to the counter. Kurt drained his own cup before beginning his harness description again, this time with much less enthusiasm. Kitty returned and set his cup in front of him. She had found every excuse to touch him in the past few days, brushing his shoulder, holding his hand, tweaking his bottom, but now she seemed to be sitting behind a wall.
Kurt felt an undeniable stab of pain in his belly. He was nearly nineteen year old and felt like he was back in the fifth grade again. Boys couldn't tell girls when they liked them. Especially boys who looked like him. Bobby was like a brother to Kitty, but he'd been allowed to greet her with a kiss. But not Kurt. Bobby left for the mansion a few minutes later, saying he'd just stopped in on his way back when he'd seen their professor's car.
"Ready to go?" Kurt asked, tossing a few bills down on the table. Kitty nodded with a too-bright smile on her lips and bounced up from the chair. She kept up a non-stop chatter while they put on their coats and went back outside to the car. She was definitely nervous. She didn't babble anymore except when she was really uncomfortble. And she hadn't done it while talking to him since he'd caught her buying condoms the previous year. She'd been dating Lance then. He didn't bother to listen to her chit chat as he steered the car back toward Bayville. Finally he couldn't stand it anymore and pulled into the parking lot of the currently deserted mall. Kitty stopped talking and stared out the window. He stopped the car and put it into park. He waited.
"I don't know why I did that." She dropped her gaze to her hands.
"I do." He said. Then he teleported out of the driver's seat, leaving Kitty with the car and the keys in the ignition.
"Shit!" Kitty slid into the driver\eat eat and banged her forehead on the steering wheel. "I'm such an asshole."
