A fifteen-year-old red haired boy stepped out of the Xavier school, into the backyard. He sat down on a bench, taking a cigarette out of his shirt pocket he put the white nicotine filled stick into his mouth and lit it.
He took a deep drag than bringing his right hand up this mouth balanced the cigarette between two fingers as he pulled it from his mouth and slowly exhaled the smoke, watching the slightly greyish cloud float into the air, his electric blue eyes watching as the breeze gently blew the toxic cloud away.
“Those things’ll kill ya, in case ya haven’t heard,” Logan warned as he prepared to light his cigar, sitting next to the boy.
“No more than those cigars’ll kill you,” Zac replied.
Logan quirked a brow, “I can walk away from wrecks, kid. You can’t.” He lit the cigar and took a drag.
Zac nodded, “that’s true… but I can still use my power to keep my lungs, esophagus and throat healthy, by controlling the electrical cellular function.”
“Fair enough,” Logan replied, gruffly.
Zac took a long drag of his cigarette, still watching the sky.
“Got a lot on your mind kid,” Logan stated. It wasn’t a question, He already knew that was the case. Zac had been at the institute for a year now, with nowhere else to go, and some of the students still having issues with him. He always ended up like this when things were getting rough and wearing him down.
“Always,” Zac answered.
“Ya know some people… they only see what’s in front of ‘em, they don’t look at the deeper parts of a situation,” Logan offered.
“I know… I’ve lived with this most of my life. It doesn’t hurt nearly as much as my own family,” Zac reassured.
“You deserve to be happy,” Logan added.
Zac nodded, “Someday it’ll happen… I’m happier now than I was a decade ago.”
Logan nodded a bit and gently ruffled Zac’s hair before walking off. Zac inwardly sighed, ‘and it’ll be even better in a few more years… I just have to decide everything I want to happen.’
He blinked when he saw Sky walking over and put out the cigarette.
Sky lightly giggled, “you saw me walking over and butt out the smoke?”
“Well yeah, last thing I want is a friend hackin’ their lungs out,” Zac almost grumbled in reply.
“What’s wrong?” Sky asked as she sank down next to him.
Zac shrugged, “Just the usual crap.”
“But it’s getting’ to you,” Sky observed.
Zac looked at the girl before replying, “Wouldn’t it bug you?”
“I don’t know. Maybe? I’ve never thought about it,” Sky admitted with a slight blush.
“I mean I am who I am. I know who I am, I don’t try to be anyone else. If someone’s got a problem with it… sucks to be them. I hope I’m making sense,” Sky added, her cheeks still tinged with red.
Zac smirked a bit and nodded, “Yeah.” He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
“Let’s have a movie night,” Sky suggested, looking up at the giant blue mass above them.
Zac blinked and looked to her, “What?”
“A movie night. Ya know just grab arms full of junk food and watch movies,” Sky repeated.
Zac blinked repeatedly, “sounds like a slumber party.”
Sky giggled a little, “I suppose it does. I didn’t mean for it to but… I know you get so deep into movies you forget what’s going on for a bit… but I also know going out to a theater sometimes causes more problems. So then I just figured…”
“I see where that thought came from now,” Zac interrupted, “It could be fun.”
“Cool!” Sky exclaimed.
“Just one thing, no chick flicks,” Zac bargained.
“Haha, deal! I don’t even like those anyway,” Sky replied before heading into the institute.
“Where are you goin’?” Zac hollered after her.
Sky spun around, “To make sure we’ve got my frozen yogurt for the night!”
Zac chuckled and shook his head as he relit the remaining half of his cigarette and took a drag, his mind drifting back to when he met Caleb and then Skylar.
Fourteen-year-old Zac zipped up his jeans and left the urinals walking over to the sink. He took a bit too much soap and began lathering up his hands. He heard the washroom door open and close but didn’t think anything of it.
“The hell are you doin’ in here?” A man’s voice bellowed at him.
Zac didn’t bother looking at the man as he began to rinse his hands, “Same thing as you. Nature called.”
“So why didn’t you use the proper washroom?” The man demanded.
“I did,” Zac replied, as he took some paper towels and wiping his wet hands in the brown paper, hearing it crimple with his actions.
“You fuckin’ stupid she-he, this ain’t the washroom for you,” The man growled out.
“You’re just real fucked up aren’t ya? You should get into therapy, have ‘em straighten ya out or is it just that no one’s ever made you feel like a woman before?”
At this, Zac quirked a brow at the man before responding with, “You’re what, thirty something? I’m fourteen. Watch your mouth, pal.”
He casually tossed the paper towels into the garbage before heading out of the washroom, avoiding eye contact with the man.
The man grabbed Zac’s coat collar, and slammed him against the bathroom wall, “I’m offerin’ to fix ya, you ungrateful little bitch.”
Zac scowled at the man, feeling his heart rate increase a little. He knew one of two things were coming, and that usually triggered an uncontrollable blast.
“Sir… you wanna let me go. I ain’t kiddin’. When you scare me, I can’t control it,” Zac cautioned.
The man smirked as he pulled a large pocket knife from his pants pocket, “You’re a mutie too? Man, life really hates ya, don’t it kid?”
Suddenly the man gained a glassy eyed look as he returned the pocket knife to his jeans, released his grip on Zac and walked into a washroom stall.
Zac blinked a bit before bolting out of the washroom door, coming face to face with a blonde haired green-eyed teenaged boy. The two youths collided and as Zac began to fall he blinked once more at t he sensation of an arm catching him.
‘Yes, I’d be doing the same if you were a male-born man. I always try to help everyone I can, in any situation,’ A voice stated inside of Zac’s mind.
Zac looked to the blonde boy who’d helped him to steady himself, “You’re in my head.”
“I can do a lot more than just that. If he hadn’t let you go, I would’ve scared him into it,” Caleb admitted.
Zac took a step backwards, “That was you, in there?”
“Yeah,” Caleb answered, stuffing his hands into his jeans pockets.
“And I’m not the only one here that was willing to scare him if need be… although the other one’s outside right now. Probably a bird or something at the moment so she doesn’t scare anyone else,” Caleb continued.
“What the hell?!” Zac exclaimed, heading towards the main portion of the mall.
‘You’re not the only one with gifts Zachary. Skylar and I just happened to be in the area this time. Your mind’s like static… you’re the first person I’ve ever met that I can’t get a clear reading on. But I am getting vague images… you’ve been alone for a while now. Come back home with us. You’ll have a family that accepts you there… sort of. It’s like a make shift family in a way, we’re all mutants. Every last one of us there, and only those who are mutant friendly approach the school with invitation,’ Caleb offered.
Zac’s breathing became a bit heavier before he shook his head, “You don’t know what you’re inviting… I’m not just a mutant… I…”
“You were born female, I know. I also know from experience before I became aware that I was a mutant, what transgender go through… you’ll be alright there. Professor Xavier doesn’t accept bigotry in any form… and frankly Zac, you wouldn’t have to steal to survive anymore. You could get a real job, and start saving up for everything you want,” Caleb said with a small smile.
He approached Zac and slipped a small piece of paper into his shirt pocket, “Something to think about… just show up if you wanna take it.”
Zac blinked before looking in his pocket, and finding a business card with the address for ‘Xavier’s school for gifted youngsters’ on it. He blinked a bit and watched as a hawk flew in through the window, then transformed into a girl with strawberry blonde hair and yellow-green cat-like eyes. The girl looked to Zac for a moment before offering a smile, “When you’re ready.”
Zac stood still for a moment shaking his head and heading off, though he pocketed the business card in his pocket of his cargo pants.
Zac put out the cigarette and stood up, ‘If I’d thrown that card out… I never would’ve found this place… and more than that... if Caleb hadn’t intervened that day I… I might not have even had the chance. Aside from Jessie… Cal and Sky were the first ones to ever stick up for me.’
He smiled a bit, 'And I got to meet Kiara.... she is damn cute. But why'd I agree to a movie night with Sky? Fuck.... god only knows what kind of torture she's planning to put me through.'
