Chapter 10
Over the next several weeks Loki and Shelia fall into a routine of work and home. Roger has stayed away and Shelia has begun to relax as the days pass without incident. They spend time getting to know each other. Work for Loki is easy although he finds it menial, but he knows if he wants to stay in the current situation he needs to keep at it. He finds that he trusts Shelia and can let his guard down around her. He hasn't experienced that since he was a boy and he relishes the feeling. And if he is honest with himself, he feels an attraction to her that grows with each passing day.
It's almost 3am on Saturday morning as Loki lets himself into the house after work. He finds Shelia asleep on the couch. He hates to wake her, but knows she will sleep better in her own bed so he gently shakes her shoulder, "Shelia, wake up. C'mon. Let's get you into bed."
She wakes up with a gasp and he can see that her eyes are puffy and red as she frantically searches the room. Concerned he asks, "What's wrong? Did something happen?"
She looks away and won't meet his gaze. Then takes in a deep breath, but says nothing. "Shelia, I know something is up. What's wrong?" he implores.
"It's Sean."
Loki knows Sean is her ex husband, but very little other than that. That part of her life has always been off limits to talk about as she effectively stops the conversation any time it strays too close. "What about him?" he presses.
"He's being released from prison," she sobs into her hand. Loki is surprised to hear this, but also concerned by the fear he sees on her face. He doesn't know what to say to her since he doesn't know why she is afraid. Instead he reaches for her hand and squeezes it gently.
"I know it's none of my business but you can trust me with this," he offers.
She takes another deep breath, eyes downcast as she plays with the fabric of the pillow she had been using and then begins, "Sean and I were high school sweethearts. He was my first love, my first everything actually. We were married right out of high school. I was too young to know what I was doing, but my home life was awful and I thought getting away from my parents would solve all my problems.
“At first everything was good, but over time he became more distant. I didn't know at the time that he had started using drugs. When money started becoming tight he got more and more angry until he would become violent. It started with punching the walls and calling me names. Then it turned into pushing me around. Eventually, he started beating me for any reason. I tried to get away. To go back home, but my parents wouldn't have me. I had been isolated for so long that I had no friends to turn to and so I stayed. I thought that if I just tried harder, was a better wife, he would get better and things would get better. Then I found out I was pregnant.
“I had hoped he would be happy, but he wasn't. He went into a rage and beat me worse than ever before. He hit me in the stomach over and over saying he wanted to teach me not to be so stupid. He got really mad because I actually tried to protect myself and the baby. He was so angry that he got a knife and stabbed me," She places a hand on her stomach and rubs across the scar tissue under her clothes while she prepares to continue. Loki squeezes her hand lightly to offer reassurance, heart wrenching listening to her story.
“He wanted to make sure I lost the baby. He dragged me outside, threw me in the front yard then started throwing everything important to me out then lit it all on fire. That's when the neighbors called police. When they got there I had lost a lot of blood and was in bad shape. He was arrested and I was sent to the hospital. They tried to stop the bleeding but there was a lot of damage. They had to operate. The baby didn't make it. I was in the hospital for weeks recovering from what he did to me. When I was finally going to be released the Doctor told me I would not be able to get pregnant again because of the damage to my uterus. I think that was the worst part for me. Knowing he had taken that from me.
"When I got out I tried to go home but he was there. He had gotten bailed out. As soon as he saw me he went into another rage and told me he was going to kill me. He kicked me in my stomach right on the front porch. One of the neighbors called the police and he was arrested again. This time a restraining order was issued, but it didn't help. As soon as he got out he came to the house and tried to get in. I had changed the locks and was trying to find a place to go. I finally convinced my parents to let me move back with them, but he found me there too. I moved to several places but he would find me each time. Finally, I sold some of my stuff and moved out of the area. He struck a deal for a reduced sentence and was sent to prison. Right before he went in, he told me he would find me and kill me, no matter what it takes."
She pauses in her story again and takes another deep breath before plunging into the last part.
"I got a call today from the victims advocacy group to let me know he is being released this week," she says breaking down into tears again. "He is obsessed with finding me. He wants me dead."
"Does he know where you are now?" Loki asks.
"I don't know. I moved here about a year ago and the only people that know are my parents and the victims group."
"Ok, you know I'm here to help you. It'll be ok," he says pulling her in to an embrace as she continues to cry from fear and frustration. He gently strokes her hair and holds her tight against him feeling her tears falling on his shoulder. When she is cried out he pulls away slightly and suggest to her, "You should get some sleep. C'mon let's get you to bed." He stands up and guides her to the bedroom where he has her lay down. He sits on the edge of the bed and continues to stroke her hair until he thinks she is relaxed enough to sleep.
As he starts to stand up she grips his arm in panic, "I don't want to be alone. Don't go."
"I'll be right out on the couch. Just like always, you're not alone," he soothes.
"Please Loki, just hold me," the frightened woman pleads.
He is reluctant to get into bed with her for a couple of reasons. The first being that he doesn't want to take advantage of her vulnerability. The second one being that he knows he is attracted to her after all this time together. Even so, he pulls off his boots and tells her he is just going to change out of his jeans in the other room.
"Please don't leave me," she pleads again as he heads for the door. He stops and turns back to her. Her expression is frightened and pitiful so he turns back and starts to climb in the bed with his clothes on. "You don't have to sleep in your clothes, you can take them off," she tells him.
Loki swallows the lump in his throat as he unzips his jeans and pulls them and his shirt off then he climbs in the bed beside her. She immediately snuggles against his chest. "Please just hold me."
Obediently, he wraps his arms around her and rests his chin on the top of her head. She can hear the steady rhythm of his heart and finds the sound soothing. Feeling his arms around her without fear of being hurt, she relaxes into him. When he hears her breathing become steady and knows she has fallen asleep he places a kiss on the top of her head and then falls asleep himself.
When he awakens the next morning she is still curled tightly against his body. Carefully he extracts himself from her and walks into the living room to put on his lounge pants. He has woken up aroused from having her body next to his for so long and does not want her to see that. Sitting on the couch he tries not to think about how her silky hair felt as it cascaded across his bare chest, how her skin was soft and smelled faintly of lavender, how right it felt to hold her in his arms.
Shelia comes out from the bedroom an hour later. Not meeting his gaze she apologizes, "I'm sorry about last night. I made you uncomfortable and I shouldn't have done that."
"How did you make me uncomfortable?"
"By telling you all that and then making you sleep with me. You must think the worst of me," she laments.
"No of course not," he says standing and embracing her. "You have been through so much, there is nothing wrong with seeking out some comfort." Stepping away he asks, "Do you want breakfast? I'll cook?"
"That would be nice, thank you."
