Chapter 10: It’s in the Cards
Lance stayed home from school on Friday, but unfortunately for him, that was exactly what the last revenge-seeker wanted him to do. When he finally made his way downstairs to get lunch, he noticed Gambit in the living room, arranging cards on the coffee table.
His brow furrowed. “What are you doing here?”
The older man smirked. “Deliverin’ a message. Just waitin’ for de right moment.”
Lance looked at the cards on the table. They weren’t the Cajun’s usual playing cards, but had detailed pictures and words instead of symbols and numbers. “Tarot cards? You really believe that voodoo bullshit?”
Gambit’s smile widened. “Sure, most if it ain’t real, but dere’s some with de true power down in N’Awlins. Got lessons from a voodoo priestess once. Siddown, and Gambit read de cards for you.”
Lance rolled his eyes. “Yeah, right. Like a stupid pack of cards can tell the future.”
“C’mon, just for fun. Not’in’ more’n a way t’ pass de time.”
He reluctantly sat down. “Fine, whatever. Just make it quick, okay?”
Gambit chuckled. “Sure t’ing, short an’ sweet, non? We’ll just do a t’ree-card spread; past, present, future,” he said as he shuffled and laid out cards face-down on the table. He passed his hands over the cards, muttering something in a language Lance didn’t understand. Then he flipped the first card.
It had an image of a tower, struck by lightning and on fire and with people leaping from the windows. “De Tower,” Gambit explained. “Look like somebody had somet’in’ big happen… like doin’ somet’in’ he shouldn’t have in anger.”
The red-on-black eyes looked mockingly into Lance’s brown ones. “Now, what might dat be, homme?”
The boy looked down. “None of your business. I still say this is bullshit.” But he didn’t feel or sound quite as confident in that assertion.
Gambit shrugged, smirking in a knowing way as he flipped the second card. It showed a robed figure holding a sword in one hand and a set of scales in the other. “Justice. Dis one say karma payin’ you back, mon ami. Wonder what for?” he asked mockingly. Lance didn’t say anything.
The final card had a skeleton in black armor, riding a red-eyed white horse. This one read ‘Death.’ Lance stared at it, feeling cold.
Gambit whistled. “Well, dat don’t look good for you at all, homme.”
Lance kicked at the coffee table leg as he stood up, scattering the three cards. But he forgot that Gambit still had the rest of the deck in his hand. The Cajun charged a card and flung it upwards. It exploded with a bright light and a deafening bang. Lance staggered, stunned.
Gambit took the opportunity to bring out his staff and extend it. It slammed into Lance’s solar plexus, knocking the wind out of him. The next blow brought the end of the staff whacking down on his instep, making him hop on one foot in pain. While he was distracted, Gambit swung the staff back up to break the bridge of his nose. As Lance’s head flew back, blood flying, the final insult was heaped on. The staff came solidly up between his legs.
Gambit stood over him, smiling grimly. “Here’s de rest of de message, mon ami: you best stop spreadin’ rumors ‘bout Chaton, or we be havin’ more o’ dese lil talks.” The Death card fluttered to the floor in front of his face, fortunately not charged, left as a warning.
The pain was incredible. Lance couldn’t move from a fetal position on the floor for more than half an hour after Gambit left. That was enough time for him to start thinking. Obviously all five guys had been getting revenge on him for his treatment of Kitty. He wasn’t sure why they all cared that much, but it would clearly be better for his health if he left her alone and stopped spreading the rumors.
