I don’t get a barrage of “Where’s chapter (fill in number here)?” emails…
Paige
slammed the door behind her, out of breath from the quick walk up the stairs
and down the hall. “Oh my god Theresa
you’ll never believe this…”
“Probably
not so don’t bother,” the Irish girl sighed, erasing yet another mistake on her
math homework. “If the damned number is
imaginary, why is it in the book in the first place?”
“There’s a
female Evan!”
“I know a
few females named Evan,” Theresa said, closing her text book over her pencil
and turning to face Paige. “What the
Hell is wrong with you?”
Paige had
the deep, sudden urge to shake her brother’s girlfriend or whatever she was. “There’s a woman downstairs that looks like
she has the same mutation as Evan, remember him? Spikey and junk?”
Theresa
squinted and frowned. “Kind of… Wasn’t he Storm’s nephew? I’ve seen pictures around…” She shrugged.
“So what’s the problem?”
Paige
opened her mouth, then paused. “Huh.
Put it that way and I guess it’s not a problem… I just thought it was
neat.”
Theresa
snorted. “You have *got* to get out more…” She sighed again, this time a loud and
aggravated sound meant to carry through a closed door. “What is it?” she called.
“Who are
you talking to?” Paige asked, her brows shooting up. “Did someone forget the special blue pills
this morning?” She took a step back, leveling
a gaze of concerned amusement at Theresa.
“Emma wants
everyone to come downstairs,” Sam’s muffled voice came through the door. “Now.”
“How’d you
know he was there?” Paige asked sotto voce, her lips parting in surprise. “Are you psychic and didn’t let on?”
“No,” Sam
replied on the other side of the door. “She
heard me on the creaky floorboard. Y’all
come on or Emma’s gonna skin you both.”
Theresa
smiled faintly at Paige. “Your mouth was
runnin’ so you couldn’t hear,” she said. “She probably wants us to meet this new
person.”
“Or maybe
she wants to berate us for not polishing the marble steps,” Paige muttered,
following Theresa from the room. They
joined Sam in the hall and went in companionable silence down the stairs. Emma was no where to be seen. “Did she want
us in her office?” Paige asked after a moment in the empty foyer.
“She just
said come down,” Sam shrugged. “Maybe
they’re in the study…”
The sound
of glass breaking directed their attention to the sitting room off the
foyer. The rosewood door was closed but
the sound of raised voices and thrown fragile knickknacks was clearly heard
emanating from the room. “Or there,”
Theresa muttered, striding across the open space towards the door.
“Don’t you
DARE,” Emma’s voice thundered as Theresa opened the door, “tell me how to live!”
The strange
woman was standing amidst a debris field of broken glass and pottery, a bone
white knife in her hand. “And don’t you
dare suggest I am unaware of the gravity of the situation.”
Emma did
not take her eyes off of her ‘guest’ as the broken trinkets began to sweep
themselves into a pile in a bizarre scene reminiscent of the old Sorcerer’s Apprentice movie. “This,” the head of the school said bitterly,
“is Marrow. Marrow, these are some of my
students.”
Marrow
turned and swept a disapproving glance over the three teenagers in the
doorway. “They are of no use to me.”
Emma smiled
as the pile of debris turning into a small, dangerous whirlwind that took
itself to the ornate trash can by the door and throwing itself into the shallow
depths. “Nor you to me. You can show yourself to the door.”
“Mutants…”
Marrow began, twirling her bone knife between her fingers out of habit.
“We all
have our own problems,” Emma cut her off.
“I sympathize with the plight of the Morlocks
but there’s nothing I can do to help. I’m
afraid you’ve come all the way to Boston
for nothing.”
“Why didn’t
you just ask Professor Xavier for help?” Paige asked,
her eyes wide as she stared at the interloper.
Marrow’s bright blue eyes were devoid of emotion, simply returning her
gaze measure for measure. When the
silence stretched to the point of discomfort, Paige found herself stepping back
into her brother as if she were a small girl again, seeking his protection.
“Your
previous Professor is of no use to us, either.
He refuses to comprehend…” Marrow paused, gritting her teeth. “Caliban has ruined
this for us. He has made us as pets to
your sort.” She closed the distance between
them with a few steps, her heavily booted feet thumping on the old hardwood
floors. “We are not docile things,
dwelling in the dark beneath your feet, surfacing only for your benevolence,”
Marrow ground out. “The war that is
coming will be fought over us, around us… we have not
chosen sides yet, little girl…” Her hand
came up to grip Paige’s chin almost violently, squeezing so tightly that the
younger woman gasped in pain. Marrow’s
grasp lingered a moment longer before she hissed and jerked away as if
pulled.
Emma stood
behind her, eyes dark with controlled rage.
“Leave the house now or I will remove you myself.”
Marrow
smiled thinly, bowing. “I return to the
tunnels, then. I’ll see you all in the
coming days.”
No words
were spoken as the Morlock removed herself from their
presence, the click of the front door shutting not the jarring slam anyone had
been expecting. After a long moment,
Emma spoke. “That did not go as
planned. I detest deviation from a plan. Theresa, find your father and inform him that
we will be meeting this evening with Warren and Betsy. Kitty will be here tomorrow evening so Paige make sure your room is prepared.”
“Wait… what’re
we going to do about Marrow?” Sam asked, his face red
with anger. No one, he thought angrily,
fucks with his sister and lives to tell about it.
Emma folded
her arms primly, her stiletto heels sinking into the thick oriental
rug beneath her feet. “Nothing. She is not our concern.”
“But she…”
“…is not
our concern. Now do as you’re told or I’ll
arrange for Logan to come up for extended Danger Room training sessions.” She turned her back on the teenagers, busying
herself with the remaining knickknacks on the table
top near the lamp. _Hellions were so
much easier to deal with, _ she sighed to herself. _Blind obedience is much nicer than free
thought sometimes… _
