*A.N. I'm turning the fic in a whole different direction that sticks closer to the movie, rather than an AU that has them going off the grid as far as the movie is concerned. It's easier to work off of a pre built plot, and I'm lazy, so sue me. next chapter should be re-worked by next week. I'm going to try to stick to updating once a week.*
Heroes and Sidekicks Bucky was Steve Rodger’s hero. Ever since they met, and all through their lives, Bucky had been there, defending, supporting, and aweing Steve. He was strong, he was brave and he seemed to be the only one who took ‘Sick Steve’ seriously. Bucky quickly grew to be popular in PS 170, and he could have been friends with anyone, but he always saved a seat at lunch for Steve. In high school, Steve had no date to the junior prom, as none of the friends of Bucky’s girl would consider going with “the runty sidekick”, Bucky informed Christine that instead of the dance, they would take Steve to the pictures. She then proceeded to declaim in front of the whole school that she had no intention of missing the biggest night of her school career and that he better take her to the dance or else. Bucky opted for else, which turned out to be his letterman’s jacket thrown at his head and his varsity pin turning up in a pawn shop. After that, Steve started to notice changes in how he saw Bucky. Sure he had always been in awe of the great James Buchanan Barnes. Now, though, he felt an odd tightening in his chest when he thought of his best friend. His doodles, which he’d drawn most of his life, began to feature Bucky more and more. He found he couldn’t sleep without drawing at least a sketch of his friend before bed. Even with that his dreams were fuzzy and confusing, and he would wake thinking that he had dreamed of being a woman married to his hero. The next girl Bucky went with, Maria Hemsworth was very careful to be sweet and accommodating to Steve. She was best friends with a Philippa Coulson, a nice enough girl who happened to be cursed with glasses and a rather muscular, fairly unfeminine frame. For a year, the four of them spent a lot of time together. Steve couldn’t help but feel jealous of Maria though, when she and Bucky would slip out of the soda shop early and he was left to take Philippa home. He knew that most people assumed that he and Philippa were steady, like Bucky and Maria, but that wasn’t true, and he thought that Philippa was really quite glad of that, and so was he. That Christmas, after a party thrown by the Hemsworths, she pulled him aside. “I only bought you the pencil set as something to give you that other people could see, but what I really want is to tell you something that you might like better.” The stocky girl told him. “What’s that?” Steve replied cautiously. He had an odd feeling in his gut, and was a bit distracted by Bucky holding Mary’s coat in one arm and handing Philippa’s to him. “I’ll tell you tomorrow, be at Jacobson’s Deli in Queens, at three in the afternoon. Come alone.” She said as Steve helped her into her coat. Steve was speechless, and felt rather like a Private Eye told to meet an informant, like in those comics he and Bucky read. All night he tossed and turned and drew pictures of Bucky with the colored pencils Philippa had given him. The appointed time came and he was a nervous wreck. His primary concern was that Philippa would say she was interested in going together, really, even though he’d never thought she had any more interest in him than he did in her. He missed her when she came in. She was wearing men’s clothing, and had her ash blonde hair up in a newsboy cap. Only when she sat down and winked at him did he recognize her brilliant blue eyes. “I wanted you to meet Phillip. This is who I am, inside. I may have been born a girl, but my grandmother says Loki tapped me in the womb to make me a boy inside. She’s full of belief in the old gods of her great, great, grandfather’s people. The Selvigs have passed down the stories for generations, and while I don’t know that they are anything other than myth, I do know that before I was born, something went wrong and I wound up like this.” She or, rather he, gestured to himself. “It’s not wrong, whatever people tell you, and they will. It’s how I was born. I had no choice. To be wrong you have to make a decision. And I don’t think you’re wrong to be the way you are because that’s not a decision either.” “I…don’t, look; I’m a man inside, not a girl.” Steve was in shock. He was shaking, and remembering all the nights he dreamed of being married to Bucky. Then he realized he only assumed that those dreams were about being a woman. But the more that he thought about it, he had been himself, a boy. “I have no desire to be a woman!” He said with a measure of relief. “I didn’t think you were like me that way, Steve. I know you better than that. But I also know how I feel about Maria, and I see how you look at James. I told Maria a few months ago about Philip, about how I love her, and how if she didn’t want to be my friend anymore I’d go to my family in Tonesburg, in Norway. Grandfather Jan would take me in. The Germans aren’t going to go there; it’s really out of the way. Maria told me, and said I could tell you when she told James, that she’s actually very interested in the real me, Phillip…and in the outside me, Philippa. She likes both men and women, that way. Right now, she is telling James, and I’m telling you. I really wanted to tell you specifically because I think you may be like Maria. I think you’re in love with him.” She sighed heavily and got up. “Eight o’clock tonight we’re getting on a ship to Norway, while we still can. Good bye Steve.” Steve drew a picture for them as a going away present. It was of Maria flanked by Philip (given a small moustache and goatee.) and Philippa (minus the glasses and decidedly more pin-up girl than the real thing). He expected to be the only one there to send them off, but it appeared as though the entire Coulson clan turned out to say “good bye” to their new daughter and “write often” to their female son. Maria vowed to frame the picture, and Philip got a tear in his eye he quickly blinked away. In the mass of tall blonde Coulsons the young man caught a glimpse of a tall, muscular, handsome man in a suit. He felt a stirring in his groin, and then realized the black haired Adonis was none other than James Buchanan Barnes. Steve gasped just loudly enough to be heard by Bucky, and was quickly grasped in a tight hug. It was impossible to tell in the crush and noise if he really heard it, but Steve thought he heard his best friend whisper what might have been “thank you” or maybe, if not wishful thinking on Steve’s part, “love you”.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
