I did not have enough room to explain earlier that this story is both movie and comic verse. I take liberties with story lines and character histories. Please excuse my indulgences. I hope you enjoy the story. It's going to be a long one. And a special and heartfelt thank you to Wolverine6claws of the Logan/Remy group on Yahoo for all your help, patience and encouragement with this story. I could not have done it without ya big guy ! *************** Scott Summers, the fearless leader of the X-Men burst into Professor Xavier’s study with a veracity not normally shown at the school. “Oh, hell, no!!” The normally subdued mutant leader exclaimed as he moved to stand face to face with the other person in Xavier’s office. “You!--.” he shouted, jabbing his finger in the other mutant’s chest, “…are not welcome here!” Professor Xavier closed his eyes; he’d been hoping for a better reunion between the two. He considered both his children. The other “child” in question merely smiled and gently wrapped his semi-gloved hand around Scott’s and moved it away from his body. “What?” he responded, his smile growing wider as he raised his arms as if to embrace the angry leader. “No hug?” Scott pushed past the young man and leaned over the professor’s desk. “Are you seriously considering letting him back in here, Charles?” Remy’s eyebrow quirked up at the familiar address. When he was here last, Summers would never have addressed Xavier by his first name. It looked as though a whole lot had changed since he lived in this house. The professor took a deep breath and folded his hands on the desk top. He’d been hoping this would go smoother, but had known in his heart that there would still be some lingering bad feelings regarding the mutant Remy LeBeau. Scott,” the professor responded quietly, “Remy is back at my request. I felt that, given the incident that took place here and the rising anti-mutant sentiment, it would be..... prudent, to enlist his help in rebuilding and re-establishing the school.” He looked from one man to the other. “This is our home,” he said seriously, "and it was almost taken from us. Children were dragged from their beds and held captive at the hands of a madman.” Remy inwardly cringed, he knew just what kind of madman the children were subjected to. “This!!” The professor shouted, banging his fist on his desk; startling Remy from his thoughts and causing Scott to straighten and stand back slightly from the desk. “Cannot and will not happen again!” Xavier looked at his team leader. “I've asked Remy to come back, Scott, and he has agreed. I’ve asked him to help us in our task to rebuild the school and, most importantly, our defenses. I've also asked him to take charge of security.” Scott’s mouth dropped open for a second or two. “Professor, you cannot seriously be talking about giving our security and defenses over to...to...” He waved his arm to indicate Remy. “Him!” He leaned over the desk once more and stated. “He’s a thief for Pete’s sake.” He looked over at the young man who was now leaning against the large desk. “He has no regard for anyone or anything, except himself. He’s selfish and rude and, mark my words, Charles; he will cause more trouble here than he’s worth. You know this. It was chaos when he was here before and it’ll be worse now. He’s nothing but trouble and completely unreliable.” Remy was looking straight ahead, taking in what was being said but not responding or defending himself. Scott thought he actually looked as though he were smirking. “Scott....” the professor started to respond to the man whom he considered his right hand. “No, Charles. I’m sorry. He doesn’t belong here.” Scott looked at Remy. “Not anymore. He made that choice six years ago when he walked out without a word to anyone. He threw this house in turmoil searching for him. His actions hurt too many people. I won’t let him back in just so he can walk out on them again.” Remy closed his eyes. This was what he had dread about coming home. This was his worst fear; that they would feel he had let them down, deserted them. They felt he didn’t care enough about them to stay and see this fight... this dream of Charles Xavier’s through to the end. They could not have been more wrong. "And, what about Logan?" Scott asked. "What about Logan?" Xavier echoed. Scott crossed his arms over his chest. "I put him in charge of security after we got back from Alkali Lake. I'm supposed to now tell him that we are handing his position over to the thief?" Scott indicated Remy who was back leaning against the professor's desk as if he had a right to be there. "I will speak with Logan, Scott. I'm sure he will understand my decision. If not right away, then in time. For now, the discussion is closed. Remy is here and he WILL be dealing with security. Now..." The professor smiled at his protégé'. "I'm sure there are other matters that need your attention." The mutant leader bristled. He was being dismissed. He looked over at the young mutant who was now looking back at him with an expression that Scott interpreted as "I win". Scott put on his best smile. "Of course." And with a curt nod to the professor he turned and walked quickly out of the room. Closing the door behind him with a loud bang. "Remy," The professor stated and the young man turned to face the telepath. "I fear your return here may not be as easy or as pleasant as I had hoped." "No shit," Remy said aloud but mostly to himself. "You just dismissed Scott Summers in front of the one person he hates most in the world and basically told him that his decision for security was being replaced. What did you expect?" Remy smiled at the man who for the past ten years had held a place in the young mutant's heart and life that felt no one could ever fill. "It's to be expected Professor," he stated flatly. "Dey have no idea why I left or what I've been doing since I’ve been gone." Professor Xavier regarded Remy for a moment. "I know it hasn’t been easy for you, Remy. I know that not being able to contact your home or your friends for so long has been a terrible trial.” Remy nodded solemnly. He was heartbroken when he heard the professor’s request that night. To him it was reliving the worst days of his life over again. “I'm sorry it had to be that way. I am glad to have you home, Remy, and I know in time the others will be as well." Remy smiled outwardly, but felt in his heart that the professor was mistaken thinking he’d be welcomed home by any person living in this house. "I believe we have some open space on the third floor still available. I know you enjoyed the quiet of those rooms when you were here. Would that be adequate?" "Of course, Professor,” Remy responded. "Jus' need a bed and some space." Remy bent down by the desk and removed an envelope from his knapsack and handed it to the professor. His smile mixed with some embarrassment. “Not sure if dis be helpful," he stated quietly. "Jus' wanted you t' know I wasn' jus' sittin' idle during de quiet times." Remy picked up his knapsack and the duffle bag that was lying beside it and turned toward the door. "I'm gonna go settle a bit and get reacquainted with de layout if dat's ok." The professor regarded the envelope and then looked up at the young man. "Of course, Remy. I will see you at dinner." Remy smiled and nodded as he made his way out of the office. The Professor opened the envelope and looked over the papers inside. He smiled and looked at the door as it closed. "Welcome home, Remy." ____________________________________________________________________ Remy closed the door to Xavier's office and walked toward the living area of the mansion. He moved slowly, taking in the damage caused by Stryker's people. The ornate wooden walls of the hall were scorched and damaged to what Remy thought would be beyond repair. He ran his fingers along the burn marks, trying to picture what happened. The harsh smell of the burnt mahogany felt irritating to his throat. He noticed the spaces where there were once shelves holding books from the Xavier's family library. Remy remembered grabbing book after book off of those shelves and going to his favorite spot in the attic. Remy was running his fingers along the shelf, lost in thought when he was bumped hard. He heard a whoomp sound and a soft curse as the object that hit him landed on the floor beside him. "Son of a biscuit," the voice from the floor muttered. Remy looked down at the jumble of limbs and yellow material on the floor beside him. "Y' all right down t'ere?" he asked trying hard not to laugh at the fallen youngster. "Yeah," the voice replied. "Just didn't expect anyone in the hallway at this hour." The person who belonged to the voice on the floor looked up at Remy. "Whaddya doin' here anyway, Bub?" Remy smiled down at the young girl wearing a yellow jacket and sunglasses on her head. "Jus standin' here mindin' m' own business b'fore I got broadsided, petit,” Remy reached out his hand. “Y’ need a hand dere, Boo?” The young girl on the floor smiled brightly as she regarded the handsome man with very odd eyes and took Remy’s hand. He pulled her to a standing position and he smiled back. “Any harm done?” he asked. The girl rubbed her backside. “Only my pride, I guess.” She cocked her head to one side and asked, “So, what are you doing here?” Then she whispered. “Does Mr. Summers know you’re here?” Remy nodded and his lips gave a little quirky smile. “Oui, petit,’ he knows.” He pointed his thumb at Xavier’s door. “Jus’ had a meeting wid de Professor. Guess I gonna be stayin’ fo’ a bit.” The girl looked at Xavier’s door with utter dread. “That’s where I’m headed now. Next stop will probably be the bus station,” She stated and Remy noted tears forming in her eyes. He spoke softly to her. “Now why would ye’ want t’ be leaving de school, petit’?” She looked down at the floor. “I don’t want to leave, but I think it’s coming. Mr. Summers said it was the last straw today.” Remy looked at her with a questioning expression and Jubilee sighed sadly. “I used my powers in the house.” Remy laughed and she looked at him wondering what she had said that was the least bit funny. “Is dat all?” he replied. “Ah, petit’ t’ere ain’t a living soul in dis house who hasn’t used dere powers inside de house at one time or anot’er.” He looked at her seriously and said, “Professor Xavier is not gonna send y’ off cuz you made a mistake, Boo. He ain’t like dat. Y’ll be ok. I promise.” He smiled again and asked. “You got a name, cherie? Or do I jus keep calling y’ petit’? “ Jubilee stood tall and presented her hand. “Jubilation Lee,” she stated, “…resident mall rat.” Her smile lit up the hall. Remy took her hand in his, brought it to his lips and placed a kiss on the back of it. “Pleased t’ meet y’, Jubilation Lee.” He let go of her hand, and gave her a slight bow. “Remy Etienne LeBeau,” he introduced himself. “…resident swamp rat.” His eyes caught hers and he leaned toward her a bit and whispered. “And, constant t’orn in Scott Summers’ backside. Jubilee grinned. “But, y’ can jus’ call me Remy.” “Nice to meet you, Remy. You can just call me Jubilee, everyone does,” she replied cheerfully. “So...” Remy began, “…what kinda power surge you have dat set Mr. Summers on edge?” Jubilee blushed and lowered her head slightly. “Not like it even matters,” she began. “Everyone here has such cool powers.” She looked back at him with sad eyes. “My powers… or power, really, isn’t anything at all.” Remy looked at her, puzzled. She sighed and continued. “It’s lame,” she said, and held out her hands. Remy watched as she concentrated for a moment and then sparks and small fireworks burst from her fingertips. When the demonstration was over she sighed again and looked rather embarrassed. “See?” she groaned. “Not even worth having. I mean, who has this kind of stupid power anyway? Sparks from your fingers?” Her eyes were beginning to glisten with tears. Remy smiled at her and leaned close to her ear. “Wanna see mine?” he whispered. Jubilee looked at him for a moment and nodded. Remy stood up and removed a deck of cards from his pocket. “Pick a card, Petit’,” he told her. She look at him, puzzled for a moment then chose one. “Awright. Now study it real hard like.” She looked at the card; it was the two of diamonds. “Got it?” he asked. She nodded, thinking that he was a little bit off if he thought a card trick was a mutant power. “Good, now jus’ place it back in de deck.” She did as asked and he shuffled the cards. Jubilee was mesmerized by the speed of the cards as he shuffled them and how his fingers moved over them. It was then that she noticed that he was wearing gloves - or fingerless gloves actually, but only the first two fingers of each hand were exposed. She was about to ask about them when he held up a card and asked, “Dis yur card, petit’?” Jubilee looked at it and smiled. “Nope,” she said. “Guess the trick didn’t work, huh bub?” Remy smiled wide and held the card a little bit closer to the girl. “Guess we jus’ have ta get rid of it den, no?” He stated and held the card out to the side of him. Jubilee didn’t notice anything strange at first, just Remy holding the wrong card between his thumb and index finger, the two fingers not covered by the gloves. Then she noticed a bit of light around the tips of his fingers. She leaned in a bit closer as the card in his hand began to glow a pinkish hue. Within a few seconds it was glowing bright red. Jubilee took a step back and the glow became stronger and she began to feel heat coming from it. As she watched, the glow began to fade and as he dropped the card it gave small popping noise before disappearing in a small cloud of smoke. She watched the ashes fall to the floor. “You… you, can do that with your fingers?” she asked, amazed at the power in that little card. “Remy nodded. “I can,” he replied. “If I kept going, or threw it at something, it would explode, taking down whatever it hit.” He looked at the girl who was looking at him with just a bit of fear in her eyes. “ Y’ see Petit’?” he continued. “Y’ ain’t de only one with power in y’ fingers. Y’ ain’t alone.” Jubilee didn’t look any happier. “Yeah, but your power is cool, mine is lame, like I said.” “Why ye’ so focused on power, Boo?” he asked. “Havin’ one power over anot’er don’t define who y’ are. Dat’s de trouble with mutants. It's like we got our own prejudices about each ot’er based on our powers. We need to be focused on who we are, not how much damage we can cause.” Jubilee put her head down and sighed. “Trust me… my powers don’t do any damage. It’s like I’m a freak in a house of freaks,” Remy placed a hand on each of her shoulders. “Don’ use dat word, Petit’,” he said gently, but with firmness in his tone. “Dis world be hard enough for folks like us, Boo, wit’out us talkin’ bad ‘bout each ot’er, non?” he asked seriously. Then he smiled at her and continued. “Don’ worry about y’ powers, Jubilee. Just be who y’ are. Have fun, play, dance… do whatever you feel like doin’ in de moment. An, remember dis, y’r not a freak. Not in any way shape or form, y’ understand? Yur a person, Jubilee. A unique and beautiful child of God. Let dat person shine while she’s here. Y’ always gonna be a mutant, petit’. But, y’ ain’t always gonna be who y’ are at dis moment.” He removed his hands and smiled. “Now, dere' I go getting’ all old folk on y’,” he said as he bent to once again gather his belongings. “Didn’t mean to get all poppa on ye.” Jubilee was quiet for a moment. “It’s ok,” she stated with a smile. “It’s not like you were yelling at me like Mr. Summers does. And, what you said makes sense, in a way… I guess.” She cocked her head to one side. “You kinda sound like Wolvie,” she stated. Remy was about to ask what a Wolvie was when Jubilee remembered why she was heading down this hall in the first place. “AH!” she cried. “The professor! Ohmygod! Mr. Summers is gonna kill me. I’ve been keeping the professor waiting so long.” She looked at the door once more and sighed again, heavily this time. “Don’ worry, Boo,” he stated. “I promise y’ dat Charles Xavier is a good and fair man. He ain’ gonna send y’ away.” He smiled at her. “Now go get y’ lecture an’ try not t’ roll y’ eyes too much. It jus’ leads t’ anot’er blah blah blah session.” He smiled as he recalled his numerous sessions in that office. “Thanks, Remy.” Jubilee stated with a bit of relief in her voice. “I don’t think I’m quite as scared now.” Remy looked at her seriously. “Petit’, t’ere ain’t nothin’ or no one in dis house dat should scare you. Dis school was meant to be a safe haven fuh’ us. An’ no one who lives here has de right t’ put fear in anyone. Not de Professor, not Mr. Summers, no one, comprende?” Jubilee nodded and he smiled. She turned and walked over to the big oak door. Taking a deep breath she knocked twice and waited. When she heard the response to enter, she turned once more to Remy and smiled. Opening the door, she crossed the threshold and exclaimed. “Hi Professor! It’s me and I just wanted to say…” Whatever it was that Jubilation Lee was going to say was cut off by the closing of the door. Remy smiled to himself and shook his head. He picked up his bags and headed off to find his room. TBC
