Chapter One: Prologue
1407 Greymalkin Lane
“Ready for a test run, my old friend?” Erik Lensherr smiled at Charles Xavier as he fastened the last panel of the machine they’d been working on together for so long.
Xavier maneuvered his wheelchair to the control hub and placed the helmet on his head. He nodded to his friend. “Don’t move unless it looks as if something is going wrong. If Cerebro works as planned, it could be dangerous.” He activated the device and the panels faded into a sphere of darkness dotted with pale blue pinpoints of light.
Lensherr beamed. “Every person in the world… and you can distinguish mutants from humans?”
Xavier concentrated, and about half the lights dimmed, the remainder changing to bright red. He then focused further, enlarging one portion of the map of people until there were only two red figures. He was sweating a bit with the effort, but it was well worth it for the amazed expression on his friend’s face.
“Charles… is that us?”
“It is indeed, Erik.” He held the image for a few more moments, then let Cerebro deactivate, as the exercise was very tiring.
“Now that we have Cerebro, we can lead all of mutant kind to take our proper place in the world.” Lensherr looked very pleased with the idea.
“No, Erik. We cannot use our abilities to become tyrants. In time I think we can help mutants and humans live in harmony together.”
The man who would soon call himself Magneto strode forward. “Come now, Charles, you know as well as I do that we are the next phase of humanity. We are beyond mere Homo sapiens… we are Homo superior! For too long our kind have had to choose between hiding and imprisonment, experimentation, death. Our time has come, and we must seize it!”
Xavier didn’t need to read the other man’s mind to see he was serious. Erik believed as completely in his vision as Xavier himself did in his own of acceptance and peace. He sighed sadly. “Then I am afraid we have reached an impasse. I cannot go along with what you are suggesting.”
Lensherr shook his head. “You are too noble for your own good, Charles. But we will part as friends, at least. Know that if you ever change your mind, you are welcome to join me. You are the only person I have ever met that is my equal.”
Xavier wheeled forward to shake his hand. “I am sorry it has to be this way, Erik. You are also welcome in my home, so long as you do not bring your war to it.”
And so Erik Lensherr walked away from Charles Xavier’s mansion to pursue his own agenda. Xavier, in the meantime, had ideas for a school for mutants. But first they both needed allies.
