Taming the Beast

A/N: This story is about Sabertooth and a OC. And for a visual reference the Sabertooth imagery is from the new X-Men Origins movie. Please review. Good or bad I’m not picky.

(Emma’s POV)

The rain beat down heavily and a quick glance at the sky told me it wasn’t going to stop anytime soon. Sighing I kept walking. Wondering if anyone would be traveling this lonely stretch of road. Hitchhiking had to be one of my stupidest ideas but it worked. Saved my strength.

Humming softly my gaze drifted from the gravel under my feet to my nails. Claws really, as I could retract them and extend them like a cat, and remembered the first night my mutation had been triggered. My father had nearly killed me, shooting me with a Winchester rifle.

The first shot had missed, the second hit me in the chest and I’d run. Moving so swiftly my family couldn’t follow I had run until my body refused to go any further. I remember lying in the long grass of a field, waiting to die, waiting for the end. And then he appeared. Tall, menacing, dressed all in black I had thought he was death come to claim my soul.

How wrong I’d been. He helped me. Saved my life, even though now I know I wouldn’t have died. My mutation enables me to heal injuries fairly quickly. But I’ll never forget him. He never told me his name, never spoke a whole lot, but I’ll never forget him.

The sound of an approaching car pulled me from my thoughts and I quickly turned, hold my arm out in the traditional hitchhiker style. The car zoomed by me so quickly I hardly saw it, but as I turned I saw the break lights. I sent up a quick prayer as I went running to the car.

The passenger window was rolled down and I had to lean down. A young man, probably a little older then me, smiled. “Hey,” he said cheerfully. “Need a ride?”

“Yeah,” I said, opening the door. “Thanks.”

I dropped my backpack by my feet and closed the door. As the car started moving I realized the air in the car was cold, like colder then it had been outside. I must have shivered because the guy suddenly smiled shyly.

“Sorry about that,” he said, reaching out and turning on the heater. “My mutation.”

“You generate cold?”

Another shy smile. “Cold, ice you name it.” He sounded so proud of himself. So proud of being a mutant. Wait, how did he know I was a mutant?

“Why tell me that? Why tell me you’re a mutant?”

“Well because I know you’re a mutant,” he said and I tensed. That couldn’t be a good thing. “My professor, Charles Xavier, sent me out here looking for you.”

“Xavier?” The name sounded familiar but I couldn’t figure out why.

He nodded. “Yeah, he runs a school for mutants. He’d like a meeting with you.”

I said nothing, looking out the window. I wasn’t certain that this was a good idea but my instincts told me I could trust this guy, for now at least. After a few minutes of silence I looked at him. “My name’s Emma.”

“Bobby Drake.” He held out his hand and I briefly shook it, not liking how cold his skin was.

We lapsed once again into silence and I couldn’t help but wonder what the future had in store for me. I knew what I wanted, but people rarely get what they want in life.
